As stated on treecoveryhawaii.org, the vision of this grow hub is to keep the trees in the fire zones alive and provide trees for no charge to the residents and businesses in Lahaina and Kula that lost their trees in the wildfire. Our partnering members of this project include The Royal Lahaina, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Marriott Vacation Club and Ka’anapali Operations Association. In one of these hubs, a piece of the Maui Banyan Tree is being nurtured. This thriving branch gives a symbolic hope for Lahaina and Maui and newfound community support that has extended worldwide. In a video posted by the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources, greenery blooms in a sea of dead leaves. It is none other than the Lahaina Banyan Tree, which has acted as a ray of hope for Lahaina locals and residents who lost everything in the deadly Maui wildfires last month. The tree—and the Lahaina community—however, stands strong. While a number of volunteers immediately began to help rehabilitate the tree by airing out its soil, treating it with a nutrient-rich compost and making sure it was getting watered daily, there was still no way to know for sure if the historic banyan tree was going to make it. #Mauibanyantree so after college, I lived in California. My parents flew out from NJ n saw a show I was lighting. They went on to three islands n I caught up in Maui. Of course, in the two days...I broke the hell out of my foot n got off the plane in a cast up to my knee n a set of crutches. My father was NOT PLEASED. He yelled, "I am not pushing u around Hawaii in a wheel chair!" Also, I had the ER doc make the cast out of fiberglass, not plaster, because I warned him I was going in the ocean no matter what n plaster would melt. DOC TOLD me to test it in the pool n run upstairs n shoot hot air w a dryer thru the cast to prevent all the cotton from getting moldy n if I wreck it he would cut it off n redo it when I return. I went snorkeling off a boat w one fin n a float belt, but frankly, my leg was it's own floaty device. It was hard to dive at all. #Hawaii #ripRobertMartineau #lanaibanyantree #rebuildMaui

Mourning Lahaina—a huge and devastating loss to the island. Praying for everyone who lost a loved one, home, business, job, or pet. While we did not experience such a tragic loss, many friends and neighbors have and it is hear-breaking to hear their stories. As I flip through my photos, I see just how many memories, friendships, and favorite places have been made in Lahaina. It’s been a place to take keiki for fishing off the break wall, to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary at Pacific’O or at a luau or at our favorite Lahaina Grill. It was a place to take my dad for father’s day fishing trip. Evelyn first learned to snorkel on Keahi and Ali’s gungho sailboat. We came for the best burger on Maui at CoolCat, to the Adventure Park, or to Kuia Chocolate store, and got the hammock for our lanai from . We’ll hold onto all those memories as we help in rebuilding Lahaina. It seems that the banyan tree stands. Though charred, it may still bring forth new life. Possibly a symbol of hope and resilience. It’s uplifting to hear how many visitors have made a special connection with Lahaina and are sending prayers and donations from afar. Thank you! We eagerly await the day when Lahaina stands tall once more, welcoming all who hold a special place for it in their hearts.

I've always had a special fondness in my heart for Maui. Not only does it feel like you've stepped into a tropical paradise, but it looks like a picture perfect post card everywhere you look! It's a place that allows you to live in the moment and be present, all while making you feel truly serene and blissfully happy. It makes me incredibly sad for all those affected by the recent wildfires in Lahaina. It's tragic that reports are saying over 35 lives have been lost💔 In addition , so many businesses, historical landmarks, and much of Front St. has been completely damaged or lost🥺 Maui's banyan tree was the largest banyan tree in the US, and now, only time will tell if it survives. I took this photo of my son, Rylan, back in January of 2018 sitting on one of the largest banyan trees in the world located on Front Street in Lahaina. . The banyan tree was imported from India in April 1873 (over 150 years old), and at that time it was just 2.5 m or 8 feet in height. Today the magnificent banyan tree measures more than 18 meters or 60 feet high and covers the size of a city block. Unfortunately the tree was hit by the recent fires. . #mauihawaii #mauibanyantree

The Lahaina Banyan tree. Over one quarter of a mile in circumference. It was planted in 1873 and was 8ft tall then. Over the years it spread as aerial roots from the branches reached towards the ground and dug in to become trunks themselves. The residents encouraged roots they wanted to grow into trunks by hanging glass jars of water from them. The tree now has 46 major trunks and is over 60ft tall and shades nearly two thirds of an acre.
