#MedicalMonday this week focuses on this Merlin chick! This chick was found on the ground at a young age when it was supposed to be in a nest. After exhausting the option of re-nesting and determining it was not possible, we decided it was in the best interest of the patient to remain in our care. The Merlin chick was admitted with moderate dehydration and a small wound on its hock but was otherwise in good condition. From a medical perspective, we administered subcutaneous fluids to rehydrate it, performed an X-ray to confirm there were no fractures, and began treatment with anti-inflammatory pain medication and hydrotherapy for the wound. This baby is growing up very well, gaining weight on track as it should, and we are very optimistic about its eventual release! #merlin #merlinchick #wildliferehabilitation #wildliferehab #wildliferescue #wildrescue #wildnorth #wildnorthab

Look at this baby ❤️ I got a phonecall yesterday asking if I was about today and fancied going along to take part in some Merlin nest monitoring - of course I said yes! This nest had a brood of 4 chicks in it who are about 2 and a half weeks old. It was so well hidden amongst the heather there's not a chance I'd have spotted it by myself. These fluffballs have attitude and those beaks and claws hurt! I had the amazing opportunity to put a ring on two of them (the first birds I've ringed!) and biometrics were taken before we left them alone for the parents to come back. Hopefully they continue to grow big and strong unlike the other nest we checked which has sadly failed at chick stage. I'm getting to see some seriously cool stuff up here and feel incredibly lucky! **Work carried out under Schedule 1 licence** #Merlin #MerlinChick #BirdMonitoring #BirdRinging #Floofball #ShetlandBirds #Birds #Shetlamd #MyShetlandLife #PromoteShetland #WhatShetlandMeansToMe

We have two more Merlin nests on our managed moorlands here in the Yorkshire Dales Out of 8 eggs (2nests) Only these 2 have hatched, we think the other eggs must be infertile. Both chicks have been successfully rung so they can be monitored. Ringing generates information on the survival, productivity and movements of birds, helping us to understand why populations are changing. Placing a lightweight, uniquely numbered, metal ring around a bird’s leg provides a reliable and harmless method of identifying birds as individuals. You can help with the monitoring by reporting any ringed bird you find. The merlin is an iconic moorland bird and also the smallest falcon found breeding in the British Isles. Despite its size this species is a formidable predator particularly of other small birds. Most of its prey are caught in flight using its knowledge of the lie of the land, its speed and dashing flight. The merlin's small size and structure gives it the ability to manoeuvre very quickly when in pursuit of prey. Classified in the UK as Red under the Birds of Conservation Concern Protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. #merlin #merlinchick #birdofprey #falcon #redlist #moorlandbirds #iconicbird #ringingbirds #bto #gamekeepers #conservation #recordinginformation #yorkshiredales #gamekeeper #YDMG

Merlin - the UKs smallest bird of prey. We are so happy to see two Merlin nests on our managed moorland estates have now hatched. All of these chicks will be ringed for monitoring pourposes on day 12 by a BTO schedule one licensed holder or one of our head gamekeepers as part of a scheme for Merlins ran by the BTO, this enables gamekeepers to approach and monitor nests and some also have a licence to ring them. Ringing generates information on the survival, productivity and movements of birds, helping us to understand why populations are changing. The British and Irish Ringing Scheme is organised by the BTO. (British Trust for Ornithology) Over 900,000 birds are ringed in Britain and Ireland each year by over 2,600 trained ringers, most of whom are volunteers. Ringing birds is essential if we are to learn about how long they live and when and where they move, questions that are vital for bird conservation. Some fantastic news from two of our managed moorlands in the Yorkshire Dales. We have two successful Merlin nests, the chicks have been rung this week for monitoring purposes by a BTO schedule one licensed holder. As part of a scheme ran by Natural England some gamekeepers in the dales have also been granted a schedule one license. Here is a merlin chick from our Ray Wind Farm in the UK. Merlin are Britain’s smallest bird of prey and a high conservation priority species. As a result, Vattenfall contacted the local Northumbria Ringing Group for help with ringing this species for the benefit of conservation. #Vattenfall #environment #RayWindFarm

Such exciting times out the studio window! There are five (!) Merlin chicks growing impossibly fast in their crow's nest. From my first sighting of them as newly hatched fuzzy grey chicks on July 2nd, they've grown into clamouring giants exploring the boundaries of their nest, stretching their wings and rapidly losing their down as their new plumage comes in. What I thought was a family of two has revealed itself to be five! Their sleek parents are working from dusk to dawn to keep them fed. At the same time, there's a Robin pair nesting under the eaves next door and I'm trying not to become too invested in their success. #avianart #ornithological #birdart #wildlifeart #urbanwildlife #backyardbirds #urbanbirds #Moleskine #fledgling #gouache #birdstudy #falcon #urbanbirds #urbanjungle #merlin #raptor #merlins #merlinchick #sketch #sketchbook #birdsketch #canadianartist #fromcanada #birdsofprey #backyardbirder #gouachesketch #animalart #ShannonReynoldsArt #backyardnaturalist #crowsnest

Merlin chick .... spotted today on one of our managed moorland estates in the Yorkshire Dales. They are Britain’s smallest bird of prey and are currently on red list of course for conservation concern by the BTO, however there is some good news for the species with breeding of merlin increasing on managed grouse moors over the last 20 years. In general Merlins are ground nesting birds however, they will nest in the abandoned nests of other raptors or corvids. Typically they breed at one year of age, laying a single clutch of 3-5 eggs. They do most of their hunting by watching from a perch, then flying out to capture prey in the air, or will hunt by flying low over ground taking prey by surprise., seldom dives steeply from above to capture its prey. #merlin #birdofprey #merlinchick #bto #redlist #uksmallestbirdofprey #managedmoorland #thriving #prefered #habitat #yorkshire #yorkshiredales #YDMG
