Moorland birds of prey have had a successful breeding season here in the Yorkshire Dales. From one of our managed moorland estates, these Merlin have been rung by our local BTO ringer. There were 5 merlins in total .. 4 rung 2 male 2 female 1 was dead in nest. These globally threatened species spend around 3 months here on our managed moors as they favour the ground as a proven safe haven to breed and rear their young. It has been recorded in a survey by GWCT that waders significantly improve by controlling the numbers of some of their predators. In the survey waders were more than three times as likely to raise a chick to fledgling on an area with predator control than on an area without. Once the chicks fledge they then spend the other 9 months of the year elsewhere so we are hoping to get some information on the survival, productivity and movements of the birds, helping us to understand why populations decline. The rings are provided by the British Trust of Ornithology (BTO) and placed around the chicks leg. Placing a lightweight, uniquely numbered, metal ring around a bird’s leg provides a reliable and harmless method of identifying birds as individuals.
