🏴 Alexander III 1249-1286 AD 🏴 This silver hammered voided long cross penny was minted under Alexander III of Scotland early in his reign. When Alexander III died in 1286 without any male heirs, his granddaughter, Margaret of Norway, inherited the throne, but died in 1290 on the way to be crowned. A power vacuum followed, allowing Edward I of England to interfere and depose the weak John Balliol in 1296. I’m sure we all know what happened next with the tale of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and the fight for Scottish independence. Robert the Bruce eventually became king of Scotland in 1306. So, the Icenian hoard I was so lucky to find has a mix of 4 different design of gold staters. Seven were the Freckenham Flowers, named after a hoard found in the village of Freckenham in the 70’s - the are the flowers, you can see the petal on one side of the coin. They are all slightly different because some are made on different dies and struck by hand. Just admiring the Roman bracelet I found last weekend. 🤩 Someone suggested that it may have been deliberately bent as a sacrificial offering, possibly in the crude shape of a serpent? The ancient world was fascinated by the serpent god Glycon, believed to have healing powers. “Beginning late in the reign of Antoninus Pius and continuing into the 3rd century, official Roman coins were struck in honor of Glycon, attesting his popularity. The Roman currency bearing the image of Glycon is known to have been in active circulation during 3rd century.” I’m not sure, just looks a bit crooked to me but who knows, perhaps someone was asking for healing. Obverse: head of Apollo left; reverse: bull butting right. 🐂 This find is one of a handful of recorded examples this far west on the PAS database, and only the second recorded from Gloucestershire! 🙌 These types were among the very first coins to be minted in the UK. Potins were cast in a long strip, which the individual coins were then cut from, resulting in the crude casting waste (sprue) at two points around the edge.
