Silvercoin number 50 in 2024! 1 skilling 1677. I cant believe the season im having! Previous record was 33 silvercoins during the 2022 season, and I practicly lived on the field that season for personal reasons. I was convinced I could never beat that record. Unearthing a SECOND Roman Hoard On a muggy, summer’s day, 9 months and 10 days after discovering Britain’s largest early-Roman hoard, I went to explore land close to an ancient trackway. This was land with clues hinting at ancient activity, yet it had never been searched with a metal detector before. What I found was simply remarkable. A SECOND Roman hoard. This just in! From another local collector friend, traded a WW1 dress saber for this awesome M5 Flak Helmet. Flak helmets are becoming more and more scarce and I've been looking for one for years. I love the look of these and it fits perfect with the matching Type AN-H-15 flight cap, now all I need are the goggles and respirator. The M5 Flak Helmet was one of the answers to the problem aviators were having with head protection in bomber planes. The AAF needed something more than the flight caps to protect from shrapnel bouncing around the inside of the planes. The M3 Flak Helmet was the first production model, featuring shorter rounded ear flaps. The M4A2 featured a cloth covering over both flaps and the helmet. The M5 featured longer tear drop shaped ear flaps to ensure neck and cheek cover. Oct 2d 1944. “After a lot of hard work, overcoming muddy terrain conditions and dodging very heavy enemy artillery fire, the first Platoon completed their bridge at 1630 in the 119th Infantry Sector. Further ahead, our troops were running into very stout resistance. … Enemy artillery fire had been very heavy all day, especially among the assault troops. Company A engineers with the infantry assault teams were particulary hard hit. In one shell barrage very soon after H-Hour, Roger C. Thames and 3 other men from Company A, were killed. Seven men were wounded in Company A.” Roger was a Sgt. of the 105th engineers battalion, 30th Infantry Division. They were also called “THE WORK HORSE OF THE WESTERN FRONT” Roger was buried on October 6, 1944 at Henri Chapelle #1, I’m going to come back to this later because according to us, this information is incorrect. He was reburied in the United States on December 11, 1947. The find you see in the photo is a temporary marker for a grave. I would like to show enormous respect for the men who liberated our ancestors from occupation. Men like Roger, should never be forgotten. I write now with utmost honesty that a man can write that this marker was not found at Henri Chapelle cemetery, or near the cemetery. And no human remains were found. Serendipitous or what? When I found out about this dig from @scott_detects I had to go. I look for signs from the gods all the time and I felt this was one I couldn't pass up. The finds were not as serendipitous as the location. But, if Musketballs are your thing (which I am very happy to say they are mine 😁....... the first 10 or so anyway 😬) then I can highly recommend digging this close to a 13th century castle, which fell in the English Civil War. The land had been done before of course, battered I would say as heavily as the Parliamentarians forces besieged the castle (and hawked no doubt) as non lead finds were few and far between, but I am not complaining. What an epic location! I spent a wonderful day in the field blowing the cobwebs away (the wind was intense), marvelling at the history around me and under my feet (a musketball, is a very tangible piece of history and vast quantities of them paints for me a very vivid picture of the story of the land). I could have dug more, but I did spend half the day oohing and ahhhing at the lambs in the field (and getting extremely stressed when one got singled out of the herd and lost its mother...thankfully after much bleating it found her again) and fussing the most beautiful dog, with the most soulful human-like eyes I have ever seen and chatting to her lovely owners. Ruby, I could have taken you home in a heartbeat! Another day that despite my lack of finds put a smile on my face from ear to ear. Turkey season is coming up here in Quebec. Historically, Quebec has always been the northern barrier for wild turkeys in Eastern America. At the turn of the 2000s, the Quebec government decided to relocate over 600 wild turkeys over 10 years all around the St. Lawrence region. Completely absent from this territory for centuries, this majestic bird is now part of the spring hunting tradition for Quebecers.
