#OnThisDay in 1517, the Evil May Day Riot took place. It was a significant event in Tudor England. It stemmed from a combination of economic struggles, religious tensions, and resentment towards foreign merchants who seemed to receive preferential treatment from the Crown. The riot was instigated by an inflammatory Easter sermon that encouraged violence against foreigners. Despite attempts by authorities to quell the unrest, the riot escalated, resulting in attacks on foreigners' homes and properties. Eventually, with intervention from the royal household, the riot was subdued, leading to hundreds of arrests. While most prisoners were pardoned, some were executed, including the instigator of the violence, John Lincoln. Despite the pardon, tensions lingered between locals and foreigners in the aftermath of the riot. #OTD #OnThisDayinHistory #History #BritishHistory

᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁᠁ #stonehenge #salisbury #wiltshire #visitsalisbury #visitwiltshire #visitbritain #lovebritain #lovegreatbritain #uk #england #englishheritage #visitengland #history #heritage #stone #archaeology #chusayinka #stonecircle #ancienthistory #historylovers #standingstones #bronzeage #neolithic #prehistory #unescoworldheritage #ritual #worldheritage #britishhistory #britain #megalithic

#OnThisDay in 1769, Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, was born. He's remembered for his crucial military victories during the Napoleonic Wars. However, as Zack White notes, Wellington’s legacy is complex, and he stands as one of Britain’s “worst prime ministers.” Read more on his life at the link in our bio. #BritishHistory #History #DukeofWellingon #MilitaryHistory

FOLIO SOCIETY. It is the authors' contention that "All the History you can remember is in the Book," and the majority of readers agree. But it is their own unique interpretation of events that has made the book a classic; an uproarious satire on textbook history and a population's confused recollections of it. I am behind (again!) on my book reviews, so here is one of the books I finished recently! If you are like me and love all things “Bridgerton,” add this to your collection. Or check it out for free on the Libby app like it did. 😉 “The Real Queen Charlotte” tells the true story of Queen Charlotte from “Bridgerton.” It’s less than 200 pages, which is great if you want to learn more about the real Queen but don’t want a dense history book. I really enjoyed this biography. Charlotte’s story was both fascinating and heartbreaking. … Though this year in the UK the actual Public Bank Holiday falls on Monday 6th May, the actual date of ‘May Day’ on 1st May is hugely significant in many countries across the globe… Apparently originally introduced by the Romans as ‘Floralia’ (the Festival of Flora* the Roman Goddess of Flowers (*in the interests of fairness, other margarines are available!), where celebrations commenced in the last few days of April and lasted into May and heralded the start of Summer… …and although May Day IS indeed celebrated worldwide for varying reasons, the date has been significant in this country too for many years… Yet, unlike in England you don’t have don some poncy kit and flounce about jingling bells and waving snot-rags for half an hour in some sort of Dance invented by some geezer called Morris in the middle-ages (Apologies if any Morris Dancers ARE reading this post…if they’re NOT…then f*ck ‘em!)… No – this day is celebrated differently around the globe… Interested? Then, dear follower, please read on to find out more about this historic day in our calendars…

Church of St Stephen, Higham, Suffolk. Designed in the latter half of the 19th century by the great Victorian architect Sir George Gilbert Scott this wonderful little building retains almost all of its’ original scheme. Scott reportedly proved meticulous in his oversight of the commission - the designs for furniture, woodwork and fittings were apparently undertaken by him and approved only upon completion. It certainly seems that the harmony and detail achieved points to Scott being heavily and continuously involved - one can almost sense the great man running a discriminating eye over each and every element. #georgegilbertscott #gothicrevival #gothicrevivalarchitecture #19thcentury #19thcenturyarchitecture #suffolk #suffolkchurches #churchesofinstagram #churcharchitecture #churches #churchhistory #churchesofinstagram #churchphotography #peacefulplaces #visitsuffolk #heritage #heritagesite #heritagebuilding #visitsuffolk #englisharchitecture #britishhistory

Who Were The Ironsides? 🐴⚔️ The Ironsides were Parliament’s elite cavalry units, earning their nickname due to their toughness and resolve in battle. Originally raised as a troop of horse by Oliver Cromwell in Cambridgeshire, their relatively late formation meant that they did not take part in the first major battle of the English Civil Wars at Edge Hill, although they did arrive to witness the aftermath of the fighting. The effectiveness of the Ironsides was down to their intense drilling and discipline. Whereas other units of cavalry would scatter and pursue an enemy with a single attack, most famously those led by Prince Rupert, the Ironsides would charge, reform and charge again. Their training would prove crucial to several of Parliament’s victories, including the decisive clash at Naseby in June 1645. With Parliament’s left flank of cavalry swept from the field and their infantry in the centre being driven back, the Ironsides on the right flank managed to see off Royalist cavalry under the command of Marmaduke Langdale. Only committing a small number to chase away what was left of Langdale’s cavalry, the Ironsides turned and delivered a devastating charge into the flank of the Royalist infantry, effectively winning the battle for Parliament. 📷: Bill Martin

When the uni let you into the conservationists’ secret cupboard…🙊😈 These are samples of medieval church wall paintings and mosaics. ⚜️Wall paintings peaked during the Romanesque and Gothic eras of the 11th and 15th centuries. The Romanesque era displayed vibrant colors, thick outlines and concentrated on religious topics, often drawing from earlier art of ancient Rome. The Gothic art emphasised more naturalism and included images of both religious and ordinary life. Departing on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York on 26 January 1856, at the time she was the largest ocean-going paddle steamer in the world. She had an overall length of 398 feet (121 metres), a beam of 45 feet (13 metres), and a gross tonnage of 3,300 tons. She won the Blue Riband after completing a westbound crossing on 29 April 1856 with an average speed of 13.11 knots (15 mph), and would snatch the eastbound record the following month. In 1868, she was retired from transatlantic service and laid up in Birkenhead. The same year, she was sold to MacArthur & Wilson of Glasgow to be converted into a sailing ship, but these plans fell through. She was eventually towed to London in 1872, where she was sold for scrap and broken up. In May of 1934, the Lightship Nantucket South Shoals (LV-117) was struck suddenly by White Star Liner R.M.S. Olympic. On that fateful day, all 135 feet of US Lightship Nantucket sat anchored 43 miles offshore, ready to alert incoming ships to dangerous seas through the shipping channel off Nantucket. R.M.S. Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship, had been heeding the radio signals from Nantucket and proceeded towards the Nantucket Shoal through very dense fog. A sudden navigation miscalculation sent Olympic plowing directly into and over Nantucket, sending the Lightship crew overboard immediately. Surviving First Officer Clinton E. Mosher later said, “It happened so quick we don’t know just how it did happen. We were in the water before we knew it.” Seven Nantucket crew members died, for which the British Government and White Star Line paid reparations to the families. They also paid for the construction of a new lightship, LV-112, which operated for 39 years and now serves as a museum in East Boston, MA. #nantucket #lightship #atlantic #olympic #titanic #wreck #cruise #maritimehistory #navy #ocean #shipwreck #sailor #british #britishhistory #sea #ship #titanic #england #englishhistory #history #makehistory #livinghistory

One of a dozen bollards at St Katharine's Docks on bus route 100. The group of 12 bollards at the entrance lock of St Katharine's Docks in Wapping has been designated grade II listed. They are made of cast iron and on the top of each is written "St Katharine by the Tower". This is the name of the hospital that originally stood on the site, founded in the twelfth century, and which was demolished in the 1820s, along with over a thousand houses, slum accommodation for 11,300 people - in order for the docks to be built. The bollards were built in 1828 to the designs of the Scottish civil engineer, Thomas Telford. As well as the writing on the top, each bollard features a relief of Saint Katharine, holding a sword in her left hand and standing by a wheel, both of which are the instruments of her martyrdom. St Katharine was an aristocrat living in the 4th century who refused the Emperor Maximilian and was punished by being tortured on a spiked wheel before being beheaded. You can read more about the bollards at St Katharine's Docks on my website: www. londonroutemistress.co.uk. My mission is to travel on all TFL's London buses in number order starting from 1. Things were not looking great for Queen Anne Boleyn on 30 April 1536. Multiple things happened on this day. Firstly, Scottish theologian, Alexander Alesius, witnessed King Henry VIII and Queen Anne fighting. This alone was not uncommon; Henry and Anne fought often. What is interesting, is on that very same night, Henry VIII cancelled his and Anne’s trip to Calais. It was then rescheduled for a week later, without Anne. Lastly, during the night of 30 April, Queen Anne’s musician, Mark Smeaton, was arrested and brought to Thomas Cromwell’s residence in Stepney. There he was interrogated, and probably tortured. Mark Smeaton eventually confessed to having an affair with Queen Anne Boleyn. King Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell now had the evidence they needed. 📸: King Henry VIII, Hans Holbein the Younger, 1540 #queenanneboleyn #alexanderalesius #scotland #kinghenryviii #calais #france #marksmeaton #thomascromwell #stepney #england #tudors #allthingstudors #tudorqueens #tudordynasty #tudorhistory #onthisdayintudorhistory #onthisdayinhistory #history #britishhistory #monarchy #britishmonarchy #tudornerds #tudorgeeks

Hello and welcome to Medieval Pathway! About us: We are a group of MA students at Cardiff Universty School of History, Archaeology and Religion working in collaboration with the School of Journalism, Media and Culture on a project aiming to break down barriers to history and to #closethegap 💪 Our goal is to make history accessible to all by bringing it into people's homes.🏠 In particular, we're aiming our project at people with disablities, anxiety, depression, elderly people and anyone who is struggling/finding it difficult to leave their homes. One of our members, who is disabled, says: ‘many times decisions on what is best for us is made by the able body, they do not ask people who are suffering and living with disability. I am finding the communication gap between the able body and the disabled is widening and its time we started to close this gap.’ We are currently working as part of our Heritage, Community Action and Public Engagement module in partnership with the CAER Heritage Project, on a blog about Christianity and the Church in medieval Wales/Britain. We are made up of two passionate medievalists, but we also have a modernist too, so perhaps one day we can cover some modern history too!⛪ What kind of history interests you? #historyforall #historylovers #medievalhistorylovers #medievalchurch #welshhistory #britishhistory #breakingdownbarriers #disabilityawareness 📸Photo credit: Gareth James

Tasked with providing long distance communications from the Persian Gulf region back to UK, as well as tactical communications within the theatre of operations, GRANBY saw the use of Electronic Warfare equipment under armour for the first time. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century when it was founded by the Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, an order established by Cardinal John Henry Newman. On the 30th of April 1662, the future Queen Mary II was born to James, Duke of York, and Anne, Duchess of York. Mary and her sister, Anne, were both raised Protestants at the wish of their uncle, King Charles II. This, and their support for William of Orange’s invasion, displeased their father. When William’s invasion fleet landed in Devon, King James II and his troops deserted. Parliament took this as an abdication and his daughter, Mary, and her husband who had just invaded were invited to take the throne as co-rulers: Queen Mary II and King William III. Queen Mary took a step back and let her husband do much of the political heavy lifting, taking the reins when King William was out of the country, ruling in her own right and not just as regent. They ruled together until Queen Mary’s death from Smallpox in 1694. That was the end of the only co-monarchy in British history. . . . #maryii #williamiii #jamesii #williamoforange #stuarts #england #kingsandqueens #monarchy #englishmonarchy #britishmonarchy #history #englishhistory #britishhistory #royal #royalty

May Eve! Known by many across England as Mischief Night, where tradition dictated that law did not apply, and children and youths took advantage of the seasonal Purge to play pranks and rake up hell. Mischief Night was also, in some areas, held before Shrove Tuesday, Bonfire Night, Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Day and more. A curious May Eve tradition is attested by Ella M. leather, in her seminal work on the folklore of Herefordshire, where she writes: "On the Eve of May Day, at Kingstone and Thruxton, folk used to put trays of moss outside their door for the fairies to dance upon." 🌾💃🏻🎋 #tradition #englishfolklore #englishheritage #englishhistory #herefordshire #fairy #fairies #fae #faecore #britishlegend #britishhistory #britishheritage #legendarycreature #legends #legend #folklore #folktale #may #mayday #beltane #walpurgisnacht #myth #fairytale #myths #mythology #mythicalcreature #legendary #mythsandlegends #midsummer #britishfolklore

#OnThisDay in 1625, Sir Lawrence Tanfield, known for his harsh landlordship, died. Tanfield along with his second wife, Lady Elizabeth Tanfield, were both notorious 17th-century aristocrats. They had purchased Burford Priory in 1617, but their cruel treatment of tenants earned them the locals' disdain. For 200 years after Lord Tanfield's death, effigies of the couple were burned annually, a testament to the animosity they aroused. Lady Elizabeth Tanfield's notoriety exceeded her husband's; she famously expressed a desire to "grind the people of Burford to powder beneath her chariot wheels." Even in death, their presence haunted the town. Witnesses reported sightings of the couple driving a ghostly, sometimes fiery, coach and horses through Burford's streets, traversing rooftops in an eerie procession. Their spectral antics grew so troublesome that clergymen intervened, sealing Lady Tanfield's spirit in a bottle and hiding it beneath Burford bridge. Legend warns that if the river ever dries up, releasing the bottle, the ghostly pair will resume their mischief. #OTD #OnThisDayinHistory #BritishHistory #History #Cotswolds #Burford

Old Sarum. Definitely a home education visit. The historical fiction work 'Sarum' by Edward Rutherfurd is a highly recommended book to use alongside your other resources. Since I loved the book and have been fascinated by Sarum since, this was a joy to visit. In the distance is Salisbury, where Sarum relocated to. The cathedral is made famous through John Constable's paintings. The world is your classroom! #cominghomeinfo #homeschool #homeeducation #britishhistory #oldsarum #salisbury #johnconstable
