A little peek into our process! My husband (the tech guy in our family) uses mapping software to create the layouts for each map. I use my graphic design day job to refine the layouts, add color and text, and make them into the final product. We then print and package each map in our home studio. Each map is a labor of love!
Recipe Thursday: Tonka Pies aka Pudgy Pies. These are a household favorite and so quick and easy to make. My family prefers the pizza variety, but there are so many different kinds that you can make. Ingredients: Two slices of bread, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni (or any other favorite pizza toppings) and spray butter. These work easiest if you have a sandwich maker, but you can also roast them over a campfire, or even fry them on a griddle or frying pan. Prepare sandwich. Layer both slices of bread with pizza sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni (and any other toppings you prefer--but these are usually the easiest and least messy). Place slices together to make a sandwich. Spray pan or sandwich maker and place sandwich inside. If using a sandwich maker, cook until the light changes color and says it is done, as it will cook evenly on both sides. If frying, cook to desired look/crispiness on outside of bread and flip, much like a grilled cheese sandwich. Enjoy!! Have you tried this recipe or one similar before? Share your favorites below.

Here is your deployment reminder, it is so hard to see the forest through the trees. The finish line can't always be seen at the starting line. This experience of deployment will shape you, it will make you stronger. You will have to learn to tackle new things for yourself. Here are a few examples of the fears that I had to face, that you may face as well during deployment: 1. Functioning on little to no sleep. 2. Taking care of all the overnight shifts with your kids. 3. Conquering your fear of being home alone. 4. Not having someone to talk to everyday. 5. When you do talk to your significant other, you can't always share everything that is going on. 6. Cooking, cleaning and tackling all the household chores yourself 7. Feeling overwhelmed 8. Feeling powerless to give your kids the one thing that they want and the one thing that you have no control over. 9. Worry/Anxiety over getting sick or injured and not being able to care for your kids. 10. Independence or being alone There are so many unknowns that we are faced with everyday during deployment or a separation. But this is a great way to prepare and help you understand the ups and downs that also come from being in a military family. So, if you are facing deployment at the beginning of your relationship, just know that you will be more prepared for the things that come your way. Deployment for me helped me to see how capable I was and helped me to know how to prepare for military life and the separations to come (one coming very soon for our family). It also helped me in creating Counting Our Heroes Home (which helps in finding a way for families to conquer those fears together). Wherever you are in your journey, just remember that every step is making you stronger. Rest if you must, but don't you quit! Tag someone you know going through deployment that could use this reminder today.

For Military Kids” is a day for Department of Defense Education Activity communities to wear purple to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple indicates that all branches of the military are supported. All the service colors are represented including Air Force blue, Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, and Coast Guard blue; said to combine for the mutual benefit of all into the color purple. You can help observe Purple Up! 💛Wednesday Wisdom 💛 on a Thursday lol It never hurts to take a look at where your money is going, especially during deployment. It can be a time to make financial gains for your family and perhaps start living on a budget. I don't know about all of you, but this time of year gets really tough, as all my kids have birthdays. This month, I included a "No Spend Tracker" pad for parents to use to challenge themselves throughout the month to look to where their money is going. The goal, is to limit the days that you are thoughtlessly spending money. In turn I hope that you feel more prepared, with some extra money in your pockets as you get closer to summer. In every countdown box I include a deployment related children's book as I feel like this is a great way to make the experience relatable to military children. The discussion questions provide a framework for necessary conversations and a safe space to process feelings. 💛Wednesday Wisdom 💛 Life is all about balance!! Every single moment in your life you have to learn to take the good with the bad and also live for each day in front of you. This is especially true during deployment with kids. As a mom, there were times I wanted things to slow down, to savor every moment with my kids before they got a little bit bigger. As a wife, I was wishing the time away because I missed my husband and wanted him back home with me and I was sick of doing it all alone. . . Self-care during deployment does not look the same for everyone and will look vastly different whether you have kids or not and it is going to look different from day to day. Take for example these photos; sometimes my self-care looks like the photo on the left (a bath, face masks, eye masks, relaxation, napping and re-centering) and sometimes my self-care routine looks like the right (a cold drink, junk food or some chocolate). Guess what?? Neither one of them is right or wrong. . . In life, I am very much a believer in, everything in moderation and you are going to have days where you don't want to brag about your self-care routine to anyone, even though they might be impressed by the amount of chocolate and junk food you consumed. But some days you need the greasy junk food to just be in your feels for a bit and then the next day, guess what you can choose something different. . . I'm also human so to be honest, most days, most weeks, heck sometimes I went months during deployment where I didn't think about me first and I didn't even take time to do any self-care. THAT'S OKAY!! Find what works for you and make a plan and if you forget or don't have time, try again the next day!!
April is the Month of the Military Child. According to the US Department of Defense there are more than 1.6 million military children. While throughout the entire month of April, we celebrate all military kids, today I want to celebrate the strength and resiliency of my six. From left to right are Griffin (13), Brayden (10), Emberly (10), Theo (6), Madelyn (12) and Nola (2). The perception with National Guard families is that the time commitment will be minimal, often only one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer (with the occasional training/school or state duty activation). My husband deployed very early on in his career to Iraq. Going into our marriage knowing that he had already been through a deployment, I was naïve enough to believe that it would never touch our family again. Imagine my surprise when in early 2019 (10 years after his first deployment) we got official word of his upcoming deployment. As hard as deployment is on our adult brains and hearts, today I want you to imagine what that is like for our kids. There is so much of their brains that haven't developed yet and the concept of time (is just so foreign to them) and just feeling like one day I woke up and my dad is now gone and I won't see him for a year. I can't even imagine what that is like for a child. My admiration and love for these five kids (Nola wasn't born yet) grew so much throughout deployment. Dad was gone for a TDY last year for several months and living so far apart was tough on all of us. We also anxiously await the news for a possible upcoming deployment. But as a kid add on the fact that NO ONE else in your school or community understands what you are going through. That is truly the beauty in Counting Our Heroes Home. My kids love that they get to help support other kids through this. They made it through and want to be there to support other families and kids so that they never feel alone. It isn't just about the community we create for ourselves as military spouses/significant others but also one that we can give our children too!! Being apart from my husband for six weeks while he was away at ALS for the Air Force was incredibly challenging for both of us. Despite seeing each other on weekends, the separation took its toll on us. The kids missed him and he missed us immensely. For me, managing the household workload and childcare solo was overwhelming. We had to remain resilient and prioritize our relationship above all else. It was definitely a learning curve but all in all it made us stronger. I’m so proud of him for putting in the work and caring so much about his career. Not only that, he genuinely cares about seeing others succeed and wants to help others improve all while working on his own growth. I love him more than words can describe.
