I help to empower survivors after trauma) đŸŒŒ This is a common theme that comes up in my therapy room. Children that grow up in a home that is volatile and unpredictable become experts at reading the room. They can walk into a room and immediately tune into the mood and emotion. đŸŒŒ This happens because the human drive to survive is so high that a child growing up feeling unsafe only has one way to manage that, and that’s to become invisible. If the environment is scary, unpredictable and dangerous then the child learns to read other people’s emotions in order to keep themselves safe. If they know that the emotion in the room is a trigger for abuse then they are prepared for the danger. đŸŒŒ Growing up like this leads to hypervigilance and an overactive amygdala (the brains alarm system). And that can lead to all sorts of physical and mental health issues. But the good news is that the amygdala can be calmed. And you can learn to live in a more regulated state. Grounding, breath work, movement are just some examples of things that help. But ultimately processing your experiences in therapy will help your brain begin to heal from the past. đŸŒŒ I’m here to say I see you. I’m sorry that your experience has led you to be the expert at knowing other people’s emotions. How do we recognize a freeze state?⁣ ⁣ - the force of immobilization. A system in freeze has a layer of shutdown that shows up either emotionally or energetically or both. The strong perception of threat closes the system as a means of protection. ⁣ - the force of mobilization. Even if on the outside, the system in freeze may appear put together, on the inside, the system feels activated like a volcano. Tense muscles, constricted body, inability to relax or rest, agitated, panicky, anxious, angry, difficulty to think or express clearly. ⁣ ⁣ One of the most common experiences of a freeze state is feeling out of control in our bodies. The two survival forces are too strong and we're like a ping pong ball passed from one force to the other. ⁣ One tool to support your system regulating the freeze is TOUCH, which can soothe, restore connection and comfort, all the foundational regulatory elements that the frozen nervous system didn't receive early on.⁣ ⁣ Disconnect, numbness and dissociation are common with freeze. When touching, you may feel nothing. Unresponsive. It's ok. It's part of the process. I touched my body for three months, feeling I was touching someone else's body. This single insight drove me: "This kind of disconnect cannot be all that life is. Where there's a disconnect, there must be a way back to connection". So, I continued to touch my body as though I was touching it for the first time. ⁣ My invitation is: Can you touch your body for the curiosity of touching? I like this, in fact I love this. I have an awful lot of my borderline behaviours and reactions under control now. I have worked and still work incredibly hard to get to this point. I don’t know if you could call it remission but it’s far more manageable because I worked hard to understand it, I learned what caused it (largely) and I made some very difficult decisions along the way to remove myself from people, places and things that aggravate it. I’m more focused on the cptsd side of my mental health issues now but I never take my eye off the borderline side of me. I just wish anyone struggling to accept or understand this disorder all the love on the world. Believe in yourself. Reframe time; Rather than say ‘I have experienced a lot of trauma’ or ‘I had a traumatic childhood’ what if we started saying ‘I’ve had big life experiences that increased my capacity to love, to heal and to grow’. In the last 9 months I have been on a journey of unearthing my ‘trauma’ and unpacking my cPTSD. I see now how much guilt and shame I (and others) have around this identification. I believed it made me unloveable, but what if it actually made me more loveable? What if it gave me a bigger capacity to love, to hold, to see truth; to be wise and kind? I’m inviting myself, and I invite those that relate too, to simply reframe it within and see all the gifts it’s given. The deep intuition, connection to self, the ability to read a room and to look after everyone else. The incredible home we create within our inner worlds that allows us to feel like a safe home to those around. The drive it gives us to learn, to grow and to show the world there is another way to go. What if we are not ‘trauma survivors’ But courageous reclaimers of our power! The nervous system follows a core cycle of Activation/Deactivation to modulate emotional energy. In a well-regulated system, the emotional energy is charged, it reaches a peak of intensity and then it is discharged. Suppression means that somewhere along the way, the cycle is blocked. ​ Ways the nervous system suppresses emotional energy in the present moment: ​ 1. THROUGH FREEZE. Imagine a friend repeatedly cancels plans with you. You start feeling anger rising within you, but suddenly, your system goes into a freeze. ​ The emotional energy is blocked, preventing it from running its natural course of Activation/Deactivation. The energy remains stuck within your system, and the emotion remains unexpressed and undischarged. ​ 2. THROUGH MINDBODY DISCONNECT. Continuing with the example above, when your friend cancels plans again, anger surfaces. However, instead of fully experiencing the emotion in the body, you find yourself getting pulled into your head. Thoughts of rumination, rationalization, and judgments disconnect you from your body or move into addictions to soothe and escape. This disconnection hinders the regulation of emotional energy, preventing it from being expressed and discharged through the body. ​ 3. TROUGH OVERWHELM. The emotional energy is charged; it runs its cycle of Activation, but it becomes too activated...too intense. The system becomes overwhelmed (flooded), and as a result, it lashes out and releases the energy in unhelpful and destructive ways or it goes into a shut-down mode (collapse). Our nervous system functions based on a core cycle of two interdependent phases: activation and rest (deactivation); doing and being (not doing); effort/no effort. Both are necessary for a flexible and healthy nervous system. ⁣ ​ Think about day and night. Could we survive with only one of them? No. Life is possible because of the dance between Activation (Day) and Deactivation (Rest). ​ Our nervous system feels safe when this core cycle is supported to function properly. Dysregulation means that the cycle is disrupted: either stuck on activation or stuck on deactivation. The system is not safe to deactivate (rest) or to mobilize energy, or both of them. ​ So, on our healing path, we can't heal by bypassing our nervous system's biological need for resting (not doing, ceasing the effort), being, listening, allowing, accepting, and organic integration. Effort is part of the healing journey; however, when all we do is effort, we might end up reinforcing survival cycles. ​ And also, we can't heal by dismissing the biological need for activation, for movement and awakening of our nervous system. ​ Dismissing these needs will signal new layers of danger to our survival brain and enhance the perception of threat; hence more survival, more unsafety. ⁣So, you can imagine the layers of protection, exhaustion, defeat and frustration coming from the nervous system. ​ ​ On top of all other protections and traumatic material, the nervous system has to "make sense" of the diminished needs throughout the healing process. ​ ⁣I've created the book Embodied Healing as a trauma-safe practical guide to learn the nuances, skills and tools to support your nervous system restore core cycles, grow in regulation and transition from survival. There's a neurobiological difference between - safety to survive and - safety to thrive, grow, open and connect SAFETY TO SURVIVE is the "decision" our nervous system has made for us in moments of adversity, traumatization, ongoing stress or emotional wounding. At one moment in our journey, our nervous system decided that it was safer to disconnect, suppress, freeze, please, shut down, or set us on a pattern of denial and defensiveness. This "decision" was based on the following felt bodily experiences: - "this world in which I came is unsafe for me" - "to be me is unsafe" - "there's no/little support. I'm alone in this" - "my pain is not seen" - "this is too much" - "my needs are not met" SAFETY TO THRIVE means that we are not in a chronic drive to only survive. We are not constantly assessing how to meet expectations, how to fit, how to defend, protect or hide parts of ourselves that are deemed unwanted or unaccepted. The system feels safe and open for more of life. How do we shift from Safety to Survive to Safety to Thrive? Building capacity for feeling SAFE TO THRIVE is a gradual process and it starts by knowing that thriving may not feel safe at first. If you don't feel fully safe slowing down, speaking your truth, touching your body or staying with discomfort, know that your nervous system may see them as a threat. A little bit at a time is key. What gives you the experience of feeling seen, understood, closer to yourself and your body, a bit calmer, at ease, hopeful, grounded and stable...even if 0.1%? Go in that direction. I havent seen a sunrise in a long while. This was beautiful this morning as the sun came up behind the hill. I'm having strange sleep recently. I'm having deep sleep but exhausting dreams, so vivid, it is like I am there and living it. Some are more like soul journeys with symbolism and the others unfortunately are nightmares associated with PTSD, either reliving situations in dream state or people from my past being prominent characters. I've been mostly just putting on guided meditations to help go back to sleep in a calmer peace of mind over and over but decided today I'm not going to exhaust myself by going constantly back in to the subconscious to fight more battles and feel no rest and have opted for getting up and seeing the sunrise, journalling and meditative colouring in. When you are experiencing a trigger or a flashback from a past painful, overwhelming, or traumatic event your body feels as if the event is happening again. I had the most intentional weekend, loves. Full of deep thought and even deeper lived experiences đŸȘ· What came up for me in response to tuning back into social media (and with it so many perceptions of the world & her news) - The wars of this world reflect in our bodies, minds, children and lives regardless of whether we tune in or out. What do we do about it? I think it's both extraordinarily simple & ridiculously hard (in a world that forgets our blessed unity). We wake up. We remember we are one. We repeat this every day until it becomes our walk. Our hands and heart doing this work without thinking twice. Love becomes our second skin. And then, our first. We are one. We are one. We are one. Breathe in: I remember  Breathe out: we are one "We are one" is a core belief for me, beautiful humans. Whenever I slip into thinking we're separate, I go back to the basics of affirmative prayer. Say these words out loud again. Feel them in my soul. I think (and know) that disability, trauma, pain, loss and grief often seem to unplug us from this reality. That we are one. When we are in community, though, that oneness comes alive. Which takes stepping outside of the isolation of our hurts, of course. We must guide one another to solid ground. This is my submission for #BuildYourChallenge. Thank you @bradyjoynerbricks for organizing this challenge! . I can often relate to Dug from Up who stops everything whenever a squirrel appears... and for me, the squirrels are EVERYWHERE! I get distracted so easily and will often move from task to task forgetting what I was "supposed" to be doing, or not even realizing I hadn't finished. Yet... when I sit down to do something I love, I can focus endlessly and do it for hours. . I'm sure many can relate to this. It's an ongoing battle, and sometimes it can be quite overwhelming when things get too neglected. It can be frustrating trying to concentrate when I don't want to, and even though many relate, many other people just can't understand. When it's bad, it can appear like a sloppy mess, but I really NEED things to be organized to function, and I even enjoy the act of organizing, but when there's too much to tackle, or I don't have the right space or containers, or the pieces don't fit... it becomes overwhelming, and I get stuck. . The Grieving Mother was begun intentionally during some major astrological shifts. Just a week after the lunar eclipse I began working on her, when I had received the news I needed a biopsy on a breast lump I found a few days earlier. (It turned out to be benign) I think times we are under great duress of a threat to our existence, we can use those times to create from a very deep place to transmute those energies into art. I included both Jupiter and Saturn in the background collage, as both of those planets sit in my 4th house of Libra with a large stellium of Sun, Moon, and Pluto as well as my IC and Lilith, and have come to signify the generational mother wound handed down from both sides and the mother wounds that were endured across generations of my direct ancestors. I decided to use this piece to transmute grief: I began to more deeply grieve the things I hadn’t received in childhood, the mother I wasn’t able to be when my children were younger, needing to leave a two decade career out of physical and emotional necessity. What I hadn’t expected to happen was that one of my romantic relationships would be revealed to me to no longer be in alignment with my highest good concurrent to all these other things. It was as if Akhilandeshvari, the goddess she is based upon, had come fully into my life and into my view, to show me how to remain broken from my grief. Her name means “Always Broken” and is a testament to the destructive emotional force of grief when left to its own devices. If I always remain surrendered to the brokenness, knowing “there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”(Leonard Cohen), and remembering the words of Rumi: “the cure for the pain is in the pain” and “the wound is the place the light enters” I will never be surprised by the nature of grief when it comes to call.
