While Isle Royale is the Mitten State’s only National Park, Michigan is also home to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Keweenaw National Historical Park, River Raisin National Battlefield Park, MotorCities National Heritage Area, and my personal favorite, the North Country National Scenic Trail. Even though it’s more than twice as long as the more well-known National Scenic Trails like the Appalachian & Pacific Crest, the North Country Trail truly flies under the radar. At 4,800 miles long, the NCT is the longest unit in the National Park Service system, stretching from North Dakota to Vermont. 1,180 of those miles traverse Michigan, winding through the most beautiful areas of our state: Porcupine Mountains, Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, and along the Manistee River. Hiking it locally, you’re sure to discover even more hidden gems close to home you never knew existed.
