First project I’m sharing is my big ol’ book from last semester! I created 6 illustrations and a cover based on Harriet Arnow’s classic novel The Dollmaker. Gertie is a rural Kentucky mother who leaves behind her dreams of owning her own land to follow her husband to Detroit during WWII for work. She pines for the old countryside often, loosing her sense of self and her family as they struggle to adapt. Trying to save money, she turns to making cheap wooden dolls, hence the title. Gerome Kamrowski in Paris, France circa 1957. Gerry was on sabbatical from his professor position at the University of Michigan during this time and spent some of it researching art and architecture throughout Europe in preparation for his series of works on the surfaces of domes and space grids as well as other works. He had his 2nd exhibition at Galerie Raymond Creuze in Paris from the 26th of April to the 9th of May of the same year. We believe those are his two sons, Kirby and Felix, with their backs to the camera. His second wife and fellow artist Edith Dines also joined him on the trip and is the likely photographer. I had the privilege of being asked to create a few custom 6x6x1/2 inch flower beauties for a homeowner in Elk Rapids, Michigan. She wanted to add more flowers to the interior of her home, had already ordered custom 4x4 flowers and plain craftsman rectangles for her kitchen and guest bath. I love the larger format, it allows me to present more detail than the smaller tiles. Crocus, White Clover, California Poppy, Thistle, Trillium, and Tulip! She had her installer come in for the kitchen and guest bath, but it didn’t go so well. When I dropped off the finished 6x6 tiles, we had to reach out for superhero setter reinforcements. An old friend of mine has an amazingly talented and experienced tile setter for a dad! Two more natural pigment/soy milk experiments from my class with @fibreartstaketwo and @herquietmaterials. The red/gold one was two colors of pigment added on wet Kona cotton. The taupe one is two layers of taupe on dry linen. There are so many wonderful variations using these materials and techniques and I have only just started scratching the surface.

Hi, hello 👋🏻 It’s Ellen from the studio for a progress update! If you haven’t heard yet, my show “Before the Light Leaves Us” is opening May 3rd! (Details on the next slide) I’m also happy to share that my work was selected for the West Michigan Area Show opening at the @kalamazooinstituteofarts May 2nd. I took a week-ish off from painting in April because—as I just heard another painter describe it—I ran out of soul power. I was wrestling with a big, complex portrait that means a lot to me and could tell I was finally out of juice. So I switched to other tasks and even took a break from looking at it. The other weekend my studio pals and I had another little lock-in and I worked on an installation piece instead. It was a completely different process from painting and so fun to work on while hanging out with friends. Then it was time to turn my attention to writing a statement and titling all of the new work. Monday I walked around town about it. Wednesday & Friday I chipped away at it but all the while resisting. And then Sunday I sat down on the couch with Peter and just wrote the whole thing. Thank you to those who listened to me complain about it the whole way through. 😆 Yesterday, I returned to the painting I had been frustrated with and had a few little breakthroughs which added up to finally finishing it. I showed it to Elise. She says I’m done and I agree.
