If you over spend time trying to “perfect” beats you produce, I have the fix. Say you create an interesting melody. You see the potential in it. You create a structure that works best. Then you think it needs to be the most epic thing ever, so you over complicate things, you think you need to add things that are not needed, and you are therefore damaging the soul of the song. Let the song breathe. Whenever you are creating a song, Ask yourself this… “am I being a try too hard” if the answer is yes, give yourself a 10 minute break, see how you feel about the song. If you still feel like it needs tweaking then do so. But if you are trying too hard. The volume to which performers set their IEM packs is their choice, but I do have a couple of tricks up my sleeve to help them feel satisfied with lower levels and do my best to protect their hearing. The immersive IEM technology from Klang means that I can create natural-sounding 3D binaural mixes which result in vastly reduced listening fatigue compared with stereo. Stereo is a synthetic, one-dimensional way of listening and not how we experience sound in everyday life, so it’s a challenge for our auditory systems to decode. With immersive IEM mixes, we naturally feel satisfied with lower levels, meaning overall levels are typically 3-6dB lower. And a relatively new addition to my must-haves is the Neve 5045 primary source enhancer, which gently suppresses external spill down a mic when the primary source (ie a vocal) isn’t present. That’s an absolute winner on loud stages with a lot of wedges and amps, and B-stages when singers are in front of the PA, because they don’t have to be exposed to so much spill volume or feel they need to push their voices to unsustainable strain. Small things perhaps, but it all adds up over the long term.
