Bernard Grancher Assembled Lunaire Label Self release Released 2020 About halfway through this album, it suddenly came to me that I seem to have quite a few albums where I don't understand a bloody word of them as they are foreign language albums, but I seem to have an attraction to French singers/bands. Is this something to with my childhood and forever seeing the likes of Sacha Distel, Charles Aznavour on the TV and the fascination of Edith Piaf and the lamp post (Google it) so this brings me to Bernard Grancher who I first came across on the @castlesinspace Label. My thinking is If someone has appeared on Castles In Space then they are worth checking out also Bernard was offering this album for sale quite cheap so how could I not pass up on it. Assembled Lunaire or Luna Assembly is not a disappointment it is a very enjoyable electronic album with its toes dangling in the pop stream. I was even more made up to see an appearance of Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab. Before I go anywhere I have to say the big standout for me on here is Fuir with a great guitar sounds being provided by Julian Thomas. I might not understand what is being sung but that doesn't stop the parts I can pick up being bloody catchy and this is what can make certain records stand out from others, for all I know Bernard could be singing about his washing but if I can get my northern tongue around it then am I going to butcher it singing. This is music that is smooth on the ears there is nothing jaring here from Comme La Vague, L'immodéré Bien-être De Lìmbécile which when I translated made me like it all the more.as this album swaps from open pop music to Berlin School electronic to indie it has a nice warm feel to throughout the whole album. Fish 13th Star Label Chocolate Frog Records Originally released 2008 3 x Vinyl box set released 2023 One thing you cannot accuse Fish of is short changing fans for his vinyl box sets, straight away you can tell a lot of love has been poured into this, to make it special, which includes a 20 page booklet where he goes into great detail of where he was mentally in the writing of this and how the album came about. The ninth studio release from from the big man. While I will admit this did not really take with me for quite a while. I now regard this as a masterpiece. The Arc Of The Curve is worth the admission price alone and is one of the best songs he has ever written and I include Marillion fish era there as well. I also think the production and arrangements are absolutely spot on. Sometimes one of the problems I found was the fact it was always a changing line up, and sometimes I think the flow suffered for it. But with Steve Vantsis basically becoming fish's right hand man this album really takes off, as you have two people who know each other well enough to bring out there best. I have always loved Frank Usher's guitar playing and he doesn't disappoint on here. It is hard to highlight songs when every song brings something to the table to complete it, from beef with the world Square Go, and the lovely Zoe 25. From here it gets interesting Arc Of The Curve, the hard hitting Manchmal. Open Water, Dark Star, then the powerful Where In The World, and that finely brings us to the album closer 13th Star. This is simply an epic track. Fish seems to have found his voice on this album as it brings the power and the emotion that these songs need, which sometimes was missing on other albums. Along side the studio album the other half of this boxset is made up of live versions & BBC sessions of the album which I feel adds to the overall feel to the album as Fish I have always felt is better to be heard live than in the studio for the pure emotion he puts into he performance. And finally the art work for this album is probably the best Mark Wilkinson has ever created it is simply stunningly beautiful, just like the music found within the grooves.

Mindbomb - The The 1989 Until recently I'd never had a vinyl copy of this album but I've found myself playing it quite a lot since I picked it up as it really resonates with the current climate. The first The The album to feature a full band and a more guitar based sound, no doubt due to Johnny Marr being a member, the album was met with mainly negative reviews on its original release as it was completely out of step with the acid house and baggy scenes. Even though it still reached No 4 on the UK album charts. Almost a concept album about religion, the state of the world and love (lust), and split into 2 sides this album laid the ground work for the bands best album, 1993 Dusk. Although aiming his sights at rising religious fanaticism, Matt Johnsons lyrics and delivery of them, especially on side one, came across as hectoring. But the opening trio of Good Morning, Beautiful (God talking about the world), Armageddon Days Are Here (the best song about religion. Ever!) and The Violence Of Truth (religion used as a tool for guilt) just leave you breathless. Johnsons vocals are full of restrained rage and musically he and Marr stretch themselves into new territories that neither had been to before. Plus the album contains the Sinead O'Connor duet, Kingdom Of Rain and the singles The Beat(en) Generation and Gravitate To Me. Gemma Cullingford Tongue Tied Label Elmo Released 2022 When it comes I come across commercial modern music, I more often than not slam my arse in to reverse and get the he'll out of there. Why you may ask, it is simply I can't be doing with blandness and the same old same old being churned out by everyone who wants to sound like the next nobody. But scratch under the musical surface and you will find a whole world of talent waiting to be discovered. Bandcamp is a great place for this. Gemma Cullingford first came to my attention as part of the Electric Punk duo of Sink Ya Teeth. Now as a solo artist Tongue Tied is her second release, this is electro pop at its very best, mixed with a bit of indie and some of the funkiest basslines I have heard in a long time. Anyone who suffers from shyness and not just around those you are attracted too, will connect with the title song a song with an almost hypnotic beat that would almost makes you feel that dance moves would be better said than words. Accessory carries on the relationship theme from the opposite perspective but a more toxic but catchy chorus. You can feel her influences throughout this album from the Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Depeche Mode and a touch of A Certain Ratio. Normally when listening to songs about relationships especially one's that break down it can sometimes feel a little depressing, but you will not come away with that sort of feeling here as it is near impossible to feel anything of a downer when hearing the baselines that Gemma Cullingford puts down on here as they are full of funk and house vibes, infectious it certainly is. This is an album that is full of confidence even though the lyrics are full of introspection. There are so many highlights such as Bass Face, Chronicle Of Sounds, Red Room, Mechanical and Daisy to be found on here. I have albums that I play at home and albums that I play in the car, bot many get played in both, so in a way Gemma Cullingford is a rarity in my collection as she shares both musical worlds to me and this proves the Tongue Tied should appeal to a lot of music listeners out there. You just have to dig a little deeper.

GEX ARMOUR X .KLYNE X NMTMO - AMOR FATI (2024) Man this one’s a breath of fresh air. The great Gex Armour has paired up with both NMTMO and .KLYNE separately, with this being a link up I should’ve expected but was so happy when the tape dropped. All immensely prolific, the three take turns to present their own chops and drum loops, with each track of the dozens here fading in and out between vocal snippets on growth and twists of fate. The whole thing feels so raw but made with love, like the three are taking turns passing around the SP, moving swiftly from one vignette to the next. This impression presents itself through the actual drums too, with almost every kick, snare or piece of percussion placed in a way like you can see them chopping it right there on the drum machine, especially with GEX’s beats that always come so live and direct. NMTMO and .KLYNE always keep the sample front and centre, weaving beautiful bits of soulful vocals or gorgeous sunset-tinged synths and pianos, like on Sincerest Prayer. Each each song feels equally distinct to each producer’s style but always remains cohesive, which always floors me given these tapes are crafted in under 24hrs. Every single GEX tape no matter collaborative or solo captures some sort of lightning in a bottle, getting that immediate thought down on paper before it’s gone, and there’s something really special in that. I’d say this is a glowing highlight of Cise Greeny’s 2024, but the growth only continues… KEY TRACK: * Appreciation (.KLYNE) - this has honestly become one of my all time favourite beats, and wish it was 10x longer. Brittle hats and soft bells dance around the most beautiful vibratos and hard blocks of piano, looped to perfection. This could be any beatmakers swansong but instead it’s placed as yet another great moment on a great tape.

New Music Alert How To Make A Master Peace - Master Peace - March 2024 Peace Okezie has been kicking around since 2018 and has so far managed to amass 300,000 Spotify followers on the strenght of his single releases and a guest spot with The Streets. So there was a lot riding on his debut album that was released last month and it really doesn't disappoint. In a year of one brilliant release after another, this genre hoping album is another one for the list. Taking it queues from the sleazy and dance side of indie this is an album that ricochets around the indie pop cannon firing hit after possible hit. But like Jamie T, Peace delivers every song in his South West London drawl firmly rooting this as a British album by a modern British artist. Lyrically dealing with life as a post teen in 2020's UK, with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek for a large part of it, the songs describe Okezie everyday life backed by beats, bouncing bass lines and scratchy guitars and in the case of Shangaladang reggae. Apart from Jamie T, I also get a lot of mid '00 indie vibes and it reminds me of Bloc Party remixes and Reverend And The Makers in parts. scape.ghst - Good Food (2023) Writing this one over a Friday Arvo Happy Hour beer at my local while the sunset turns the sky pink - honestly a really fitting backdrop for such a beautiful album. While he’s on a crazy 2024 run, I decided to go back to one of my favourite tapes and easily one of scape’s finest. The brilliant producer shows off a collection of sweet, sugary tracks that blend seamlessly into each other with almost every sample here holding it’s own instantly-stuck-in-your-head quality with some of the finest chops I think he’s done. Every airy vocal, guitar lick or bassline feels equally weightless and grounded, never tuned too high to feel like chipmunk soul but finding a sweet spot somewhere inbetween. Each song locks in a pretty solid groove and always a crazy bounce between the punchy kicks, bright snares that feel like they pop every time they hit, and off kilter super loose hats. I’m reminded of this gorgeous blend every time I listen to this, and reminded of the futuristic and historic wave that PSG’s making at the moment - but a tape like this as well as so many others in scape’s discog, should stand the test of time in a rich and expansive soulhop scene. KEY TRACK: - Bay Leaf - this song’s heavenly loop and perfect drum placement makes the whole thing sound like clouds clearing and the sun shining through. It seems to get stuck in my head all the time and it feels like a standout on an album full of standouts.
