I had read that this place only sees a few hundred visitors a year, but I had a hard time believing it… As we started to look for info to plan this adventure, I understood why. We had to read old blog posts, use JF’s orienteering skills to map the points we wanted to see in advance, play phone tag to get a permit (that we ended up getting from a nice lady’s house at 8:30 pm on the reservation on Friday night…). This place will make you work for it, but this will only make it sweeter. We didn’t see a soul all day. We could not stop shaking our heads as we explored yet another point on the map, each one more spectacular than the last. It’s a true gem like we’ve rarely seen before. We’re still in awe that places like this still exist. Unspoiled. Let’s keep it this way. *Coal Mine Canyon is located on the border between the Hopi and Navajo Reservations and a permit is required to visit the canyon, but it is not available from the Navajo Parks & Recreation office in Cameron as it used to be but at the elusive new Local Chapter…

Part 2 - Mount Baker - Chain Lakes Trail to Hermann Saddle from Bagley Lakes You know a place is truly stunning when it manages to blow your mind on such an overcast day. We are in awe at how well-designed the trails are here. The switchbacks make for gradual ascents that never feel overwhelming and you gain altitude without suffering too much. Chain Lakes can be done as a loop as well (look up Chain Lakes loop), but since we had done the other section last time (Chain Lakes to Hayes Lake), we decided to do the other half as an out and back and added Bagley Lakes Trail, Bagley Creek Trail and Fire and Ice Trail as well since it was so pretty and not crowded thanks to the rain.

I find the transitions and cycles we move through in life so juicy. It’s like living multiple lifetimes in one. Morphing into a new being, showing up in the world differently. Soaking it all up, embracing the change, letting go of the old and welcoming the new. For so many years all I wanted to do was travel, for the rest of my life. Never settling down. The Great Lakes are something else. It’s like being by the ocean minus the salty air. It was our first time exploring Lake Michigan and we were blown away. Of course being here off-season helps. Who doesn’t love the quiet of an empty path and an empty beach? I found this gem of a place while «traveling» on Google Map last winter, bundled up with the dogs by the fire in the Yukon, dreaming of sand dunes, wetlands and miles of blue shoreline. And here we are. Oh to dream our dreams and have them too!

She thinks she is. 😂 This was sent to her momma human last night who's on a safari and off line for a few days. Dora stole the dentix stick from Norma yesterday. Right in front of me. Norma retaliated by taking the banana skin of my plate. It's all go this dog sitting. Norma is younger and bigger than Dora but we all know who's boss. Had a longer walk this morning as the humans are going out to Sunday lunch. Sans doggos. Checking out local pub @rankenarms and looking forward to a pint and some dinner that someone else has cooked. somewhere in downtown charlotte there’s an empty cubicle that hasn’t been occupied since march 2020. there is a pair of black heels under the desk, the points of the heels worn from walking 4 blocks to and from work on concrete 5 days a week. there are two pictures pinned behind the computer monitor- the first is of three dogs, one who has since passed. the second is a couple in the middle of a park in summer getting engaged. a photographer hid in the bushes and snapped the pictures. ‘the best day of my life’ at the time. i would have lost a lot of money if someone bet me when i signed off on that day that the snapshot of the things that defined my life pinned to those walls would be the only thing that remained of that life when the world opened back up again. i know how romanticized this would all read in a book: “worldwide pandemic breaks out and engagement breaks off. corporate girl and her dogs drive cross country on a whim and create a new life in the mountains of wyoming”— but in reality it was dark, heavy, and hard. and nothing about it was romantic. two and a half years and what might as well be a completely different lifetime later, my life feels to me like the one i was meant to live all along. and to someone who doesn’t know me passing by on social media, it probably looks like it’s always been this way. but somewhere in downtown charlotte, a picture pinned to a vacant cubicle wall tells the story differently than what fills the squares here. from concrete streets and a high-rise 9 to 5, to a small cowboy town somewhere in the mountains later, if there’s one thing the varying photos of my life have taught me it’s that how your life is pictured today doesn’t have to define what it will look like in all of your tomorrows 🌿

The gig involves goats, hens and 2 lovely dogs who need lots of exercise, a hot tub, no neighbors and a two-faced fireplace. Hard to say no to that when it falls on your lap! We’re excited and a bit scared. We haven’t done a Yukon winter in 14 years… I remember sitting in front of my phototherapy light at 5 am with 3 very awake babies and waiting till 10 am to see the sunrise. Or trying to get out of the house with said babies in very cold weather, bundling them up step by step like an assembly line to make sure baby 1 wasn’t too hot (or had undressed herself) by the time I was done dressing baby 3… And then baby 2 decided she needed to pee. I remember that when the sun set at around 3:30 in the afternoon, we would not see it again for nineteen hours… And that is mostly what scares me. I have lots of tools, no more babies and great support. I am ready to give this northern winter thing a second chance. I’ve missed the muffled silence of a fresh snowfall and the crisp crushing of the snow under our boots, dinners by candlelight with friends and skies full of dancing northern lights. There are many reasons that motivated that decision, but mostly it was the desire for a stable community for all of us in this time of change, a place where Mathilde could finish 12th grade, get a job and spend more time with people her age than she would have on the road with only the 2 of us. We really like Squamish, but we didn’t want to spend another winter in the bus in the rain and snow, and rent is not affordable for us here. And our heart is up North. The plan is to drive up on the long weekend of October with the bus. We’ll move back into the bus in April or May. JF and I know that we want to keep living on the road together. It might be our last year with Mathilde and it should be a memorable one!
