Nell’antichità e per tutto il Medioevo, il matrimonio veniva evitato a tutti i costi durante il mese di maggio, per il grande rischio di prendere come sposo un revenant o una donna incantata dell’Aldilà. Ma perché Beltane è una festa del fuoco? Beltane è conosciuta come una festa del fuoco perché la sua tradizione più importante è l’accensione di falò. Si ritiene che questi fuochi abbiano qualità purificatrici e protettive. I falò sono spesso costruiti sulla cima di una collina (la Collina di Tara) e sono circondati da persone che partecipano ai riti e che danzano e cantano intorno alle fiamme. Il fuoco è un simbolo di trasformazione e cambiamento, ed è un tema chiave di Beltane. I fuochi rappresentano il potere di trasformazione della natura e i cicli di nascita, crescita e decadenza. Si dice che le fiamme aiutino a purificare e rinnovare la terra e a incoraggiare la fertilità e l’abbondanza.
