Made it to the Tegallalang Rice Terraces (which are only a 20 min scooter ride from #Ubud) for some jaw-dropping views and a wander through all the bright-green lushness.🌴 • After waking up for sunrise, we got there around 7am. Here's the (very brief) low down: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - The amazing patterns and colours were formed by ground water seeping through the sandstone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Waves and sea spray have caused the erosion and formation of the interesting notches and shapes on the rocks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - You can walk here from the main settlement on Maria Island. The direct route takes about an hour return and goes along the coast. You can extend the walk for another half an hour or so by turning it into a loop, going inland a little through the bush. Both routes are easy and beautiful! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Make sure to check the tides and go at low tide so you can walk around and see the cliffs in their full glory! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - There's an old hut just before you get to the cliffs that I suspect many people walk past because it doesn't look that interesting. When the days get shorter and shorter. It’s so hard to get up in the morning when it’s still dark outside, and I also have no energy left in the evenings. But once the actual winter kicks in, things only get better. Slowly but surely the days start getting longer and I regain my energies. After spending the weekend there, I went to Vienna for another three days. Walking in takayna / Tarkine, Australia’s largest temperate rainforest, an area rich with Aboriginal heritage, the cleanest air in the world and home to many rare and endangered animals. This is one of the most isolated spots in Tasmania, and I love it because this area is so remote, so lush, and so (almost) untouched by humans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This photo evokes the feeling I had in this place - a feeling of magic and mystery, where the earth moves at its own pace, as it’s supposed to, and we’re welcome to take a walk and join in if we like, but it’s waaaaaay bigger than us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is a tragedy unfolding in these forests though. Not far from where we walked in takayna / Tarkine and were in awe of the mind blowing nature that rightly so has been declared World Heritage, our government is continuing to allow logging to happen, destroying the land, the wildlife and the ancient forests that have been there since way before humans walked this earth. There is nowhere on the planet like this place. It truly breaks my heart so see it destroyed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We are huge supporters of the @bobbrownfoundation who are fighting everyday to save Tassie’s beautiful forests, especially ones like this that have global significance due to the unique biodiversity. Anyone else desperate for a big dose of forest bathing? I have to admit this week has been tough on my mental health, for no real reason except that sometimes I get frustrated with the world and feel sad when things don’t work the way I think they should. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So today I am extra grateful for the opportunity to dive into nature and so glad we had this little trip planned with our mums to Cradle Mountain National Park! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After the drive we only had a few hours of walking time so we did 2 short walks that start from the lodge, near where we are staying - The King Billy Pine walk (40 minute circuit) then The Enchanted Walk (20 minute circuit). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These photos were all taken on the King Billy track where we strolled at an easy pace, stopping regularly to admire bits of bark and moss, or a spiderweb blowing in the breeze, the afternoon sun streaming through the trees onto the mossy understory... In the local Aboriginal language, this area is called Tulampanga and it was a sacred place for collecting red ochre, so sacred only women were allowed on the slopes of the mountain to collect it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s another one of Tasmania’s Top 60 Short Walks, this one only taking about 30-40 minutes return and it’s an easy walk too, so a great choice for families as there’s also interesting interpretive signs to help you learn a bit about the history of the land and it’s original traditional owners here. It also makes for a great afternoon walk when you’ve already climbed a mountain in the morning like us! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Have an absolutely wonderful week everyone!! Are you feeling the anxiety in the air at the moment? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here's a view from the beach at Trousers Point because it's so beautiful and this image makes me feel peaceful and content. Which we could all use a bit more of right now! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here in Tasmania we are gearing up to open our borders to Australia next week, and while I think this is mostly a good thing, I also can feel the anxiety in the community about it. We've been in a safe little bubble here for some time now, and while I am looking forward to both welcoming visitors the the island again and even leaving the island for a few days myself (!!), I can't deny I also feel a little anxious about what's going to happen. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Truth is, we've all become a little slack with our social distancing around here, but I think it'll be back to our best behaviour come next week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And while I am a little nervous, I know, deep in my heavy heart, that we Tasmanians are among the luckiest in the world to have thus far escaped relatively unscathed by COVID. Watching as things get worse again across Europe lately and things still progressing so badly in other parts of the world is heartbreaking. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ How is it where you are these days? I find the news is not very good at updating us on what's going on outside of Australia, so I'd love to know how things are in your corner of the world? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And my fellow Tasmanians, how are you feeling about borders opening? Have you ever heard of Killiecrankie diamonds? The correct name for them is Tasmanian Topaz - it's type of topaz that's only found in a few spots in Tasmania, one of the best being Killiecrankie Bay, Flinders Island. When cut and polished, they look just like diamonds, hence their common name! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I'm no fan of diamonds, partly because of their dark history (anyone else seen the movie Blood Diamond? Enough to put you off diamonds for life!) but also because I just don't like the ridiculous value put on such meaningless things. I know you can get ethical diamonds these days, which I appreciate. But I just don't get it... I'd rather hike to a beautiful place to look for a diamond than actually wear one! But I digress... ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fossicking for Killiecrankie diamonds on Flinders Island was such a fun experience! It began with a 40 min beach hike from Killiecrankie village around the bay to Diamond Gully, one of the best spots for fossicking. The walk itself stunning - firstly across a wide beautiful beach, then a section of spectacular rocks like this first photo (swipe to see more photos!) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The gully itself was also so pretty and colourful. We spent a while fossicking with our sieves, wearing gloves in case we met a deadly blue-ringed octopus (apparently common in this area) and collecting all the prettiest rocks we could find without really knowing what we were doing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After a picnic on the rocks, we returned with pockets full of pretty pebbles that one day I'm going to take to my expert friends at @therareandbeautiful to see if we got any treasures! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you visit Flinders, I can highly recommend this, even if it's just for the walk! In my last post, I mentioned White Eyed Man rock which is half way up the Mount Killiecrankie track - well here is a totally dorky photo of me with the white eyed man himself! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The coolest thing about this rock is that on the way up it looked more like a lion (see 2nd photo) but then when you come round it from the side of the track, it's like a giant old man's head! Can you see it? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So crazy when rocks look like this, all completely by natural forces. Cheers to Australia’s oldest continuously operating brewery! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yesterday we spent the perfect afternoon here.... we closed our shop at 2pm (usual time for a Saturday) and drove the 10 minutes to the brewery. Behind the brewery are lots of waking trails so we walked to Secret Falls, bought honey for the roadside (anyone else love roadside honesty stalls? I can’t go past... shopping at these makes me feel positive about the world!), then went to the Cascade Brewery Bar for wine and chips and a walk through the gorgeous gardens. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Cascade Brewery is one of Hobart’s most iconic buildings and their classic Cascade Draught is the beat selling beer here in Tasmania! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This place was founded in 1824 and is possibly the most photographed building in Tasmania! Partly because it’s just a cool looking building, but it’s location nestled below the mountain (near some waterfalls, hence it’s name) is just stunning. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They run tours here but currently not operating due to COVID. We’ve never done it but have decided as soon as they open up again, we’re going to be tourists in our own town and do the tour. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you like visiting breweries and distilleries? I really do and have done tours in other countries but never here, and we have the best beer in world (biased opinion of course). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let’s share some inspiration for when we can travel again.... Tasmania, how are you always so beautiful?? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We visited Liffey Falls on one of our recent road trips around Tasmania and absolutely loved it! I had been here before but probably 20 years ago, and Tracy had never been. It's a walk we've wanted to do together for ever but whenever we were in the area we always seemed to be rushing to get somewhere else! But now we have nowhere to go (literally!) so we did this! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This walk is an absolute winner - you can approach it from top or bottom, depending on how energetic you feel and which way you drive. From the top, which we did, it's a shorter walk to get to the falls, around 45 minutes and fairly easy, through magnificent lush forests. From the bottom, it's a couple of hours and mostly walking alongside the Liffey River - we'll go that way next time! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are multiple falls along the way and seriously, everywhere you look is just wow!! This iconic spot in Tasmania must be one of the most photographed sites on this beautiful island! I've taken this picture a few times now but I think this is my favourite take on it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is Dove Lake in the Cradle Mountain National Park. It's an easy 10 minute walk to this spot from where the bus drops off visitors at the end of the lake. Many tourists just walk to this spot, take a few pics and wander back but it's totally worth doing the walk around the whole lake if you can. It takes about 2 hours or so, is mostly flat and has amazing views from every angle. It also takes you through some of the most beautiful forests you've ever seen!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ You used to be able to drive to the Dove Lake carpark but now only the shuttle bus is allowed, meaning you need to get your shuttle bus tickets at the visitors information centre back at the entrance to the park. She’s a returned traveller and in quarantine so should be safe because we have a pretty good system here. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thinking of her and wishing her a speedy recovery and also feeling hard for the folks dealing with hundreds (or thousands) of cases where they live. Yesterday I talked about the Gorge Falls trail - well here is what's at the other end! Ralph's Falls! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the highest single drop falls in Tasmania and is pretty amazing to see it falling through those amazing rocks like that! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swipe for some shots along the trail as well as the last photo to see trees growing right out of the cliff face! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On a completely unrelated note, we just had pizza night with my sister and her family, first time we’ve all gotten together since coronavirus! Amazing walk to Liffey Falls yesterday... such an incredibly beautiful spot, a pretty easy walk, and really quite spectacular! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We loved the trickling streams and rainforest paths as much as the roaring falls AND the best bit was we saw a platypus at the top of the waterfall!! My photo of it isn’t great, but still, these little guys are so rare to see and this totally made me day! We climbed Cathedral Rock today! It was a tough hike but wow, the views from the top were amazing and totally worth it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On the way up I was genuinely scared about the last leg up the rock, it looked so big and steep and I am nervous about heights, but I made it and actually it wasn’t as scary as it looks at the top! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The walk starts about 40 minutes drive from our house in Hobart. The first part of the walk was through gorgeous forest along a river for about 40 mins, then a steady uphill for around another exhausting 40 minutes. Then the final scramble to the top was super steep, lots of scrambling over rocks (and sliding on my bottom on the way down!).... the top then flattens out with lots of big flat rocks for taking photos and having picnics, with 360 views around Southern Tasmania! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So lucky to live near this amazing wilderness! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #tasmania #discovertasmania #tasmaniagram #tassiestyle #tasmanianliving #exploretasmania #cathedralrock #wellingtonpark #parkstas #hikemore #wildernessnation
