We finally got to see the feral ponies of Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia!! They're the only feral equines along the Appalachian trail. They've been a part of the mountains for 50 years and help maintain the mountain "balds"; the alpine meadows which are generally rare in Appalachia. It was our final hike of an adventure to celebrate Cliff's gotcha day. We covered 40 miles in 3 days across WV and VA, and the hound puppies were excited but tired for a final adventure. Cypress laid down in the balds, and Cliff followed. A raven flew over. We sat there "with" the ponies for probably 20 minutes, enjoying the ceaseless wind and gentle sun. We kept a respectable distance and didn't intervene in their behavior. Aside from a curious yearling, they couldn't have cared less; adults rested or rolled on their backs, and foals rested or nursed from their moms. Honestly it was magical. However, that wasn't the case before we sat down. A couple (you can see them in the 2nd vid) got right in the ponies' faces for pics and posed almost touching them, and also blocked the trail for us. The preggo pinto stomped her feet anxiously, and one laying pony leapt to her feet. We sat or laid down just off the trail, waiting, when that pretty chestnut yearling came down the trail from the pines. We moved back further to give her space, but she was blocked from her family by the same couple. When they finally passed, I said they were getting too close, the woman said the ponies are "pretty tame", I said they're showing signs of stress, and she huffed and told me to have a nice day and left. Another person had their off leash Pointer dog zooming around like they were at a dog park. In the parking lot, a pair of poodle mixes lunged and yapped at us and other hikers ⬇️ Con't in comments ⬇️

Wie sich herausstellte machen das wohl kaum Touristen und so wurden wir auf unserem Weg dorthin behandelt wie Promis oder Außerirdische. Uns wurde von den Locals im Vorbeifahren zugejubelt & wir wurden von Allen um uns herum angestarrt, als wären wir von einer anderen Welt..richtig abgefahren - damit haben wir definitiv nicht gerechnet. Nachdem wir über eine Stunde unterwegs waren hätten wir niemals gedacht, dass in dieser kargen Landschaft wirklich noch eine so schöne kleine Oase kommt..aber zack - da war sie auf einmal. Das Wasser kommt aus einer unterirdischen Quelle und ist extrem sauber, kristallklar und von Palmen🌴 umgeben. This spot requires a two hour golf cart ride across the island of San Pedro, with about 30/40 minutes along a sandy beach path, and wow is it worth it. The drive here felt like an adventure in and of itself, and it’s definitely a fun experience when you haven’t done it before. Once we hit the sandy path along the beach, we were in awe of how gorgeous the island is. I’m glad we got some shots out and can’t wait to share a few more! To me that means trying to consider the effects of my own actions on the planet but also supporting leaders who will fight for and support policies to protect clean water, clean air, and fight climate change. There are many environmental causes to support, but climate change is the primary issue for me. It is an existential crisis that is no longer a distant abstraction. It’s real, and we are already experiencing the impacts. Ocean temperatures are at an all-time high, causing coral bleaching and record low arctic sea ice. Wildfires get worse each year, with Canada experiencing by far its worst ever wildfire season last year. This is climate change. These are complicated issues with no simple solution. We each make many decisions every day that can have a positive or negative impact on the climate. And how we choose can be a climate friendly choice or a climate damaging choice. We live in a time where individual freedom is valued above almost everything, but personal responsibility and the impact on others is rarely part of the decision-making process. We each need to consider the impact of our individual actions on not just the planet today but its effect on future generations. As a landscape photographer, I look for beauty in the world and am by nature a glass half-full person.
