I'm latergramming because I liked about three of my Australia pictures when I was actually there, and that was just because they all had wombat butts in them. I'm less critical now, or maybe I just felt like you all needed a break from my "Look at these trees!' posts. Now, it's "Look at this beach!" During our road trip around Tasmania, we often said, "Oh, here's a place to stop that wasn't part of our itinerary. Maybe it's nice." Then it just ended up being the most beautiful thing you'd ever set your eyes on that wasn't a giant redheaded talk show host. I'm doing the responsible not tagging specific locations thing, but partially because I don't even remember what this beach was. It was so magical, we may have gained access through it by climbing out the back of a wardrobe. I was really jet lagged. I may not have noticed. Tasmania was so pretty, from flying into the heavily-wooded Hobart airport to seeing all the gum trees to the secret wardrobe beaches to the green rolling farm fields that may have been kidnapped from County Kerry... It's deciduous beech - or 'fagus' - time! The crinkled leaves of this Tassie icon is currently transforming the landscape into brilliant autumnal colours, before it descends into 'hibernation' for our cold season. The fagus is a paleoendemic - that is, an ancient species that was once widespread across the whole landscape, way back when Tassie was still connected to Antarctica (it's been found in the fossil record from 80 million years ago)! Tasmania Day 14/15 Back to Hobart to visit @monamuseum which blew our minds on so many levels 🤔😳 Then the @kingstonparkrun this morning which was great fun with 297 in attendance! 👍 👟 💪 Then it was off to @brunyislandau to walk @flutedcapewalk with spectacular scenery and is one of the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere (over 800ft high). 😳🙌 On our way back to catch the ferry we saw a lot of the infamous white wallabies which was totally incredible!! We went to the Bligh Museum - but it was shut. Not sure Captain Bligh would have put up with such laziness - a dozen lashes at least. But seriously, Bligh visited Bruny Island 3 times on 3 different voyages (and suffering The Munity after the second visit). Ratho is still a working farm with “grazing sheep maintaining the fairways and fences to keep them from the square greens, the course is a time capsule of how the game began and the way it was played during its first 500 years.” It is now over 170 years old. We spent a couple of glorious days checking out the historic villages of Ross and Oatlands. The convict built bridge in Ross is amazing as is the site of the former Female Factory. Coal at Plunkett Point was first extracted by adits (horizontal tunnels) close to the water’s edge. The coal seam and remains of these early workings can still be seen on the beach below the settlement ruins. As the workings moved further inland, it became necessary to sink a series of shafts to reach the coal seam. The largest of these was operational by 1846 and today can be seen at the top of the hill behind the settlement.
