Jurassic Frontier is my first novel, which I spent 10 years writing. It’s a time travel action/adventure edutainment story full of dinosaurs and well-researched science facts. It’s kind of like Michael Crichton meets Louis L’Amour, Indiana Jones, and NPR science podcasts. This is my most substantial effort to educate through entertainment since I made PBS wildlife documentaries. This book is suitable for readers of all ages, though the vocabulary may be a bit advanced for very young children. Available on Amazon and numerous other online vendors, including Barnes and Noble’s website. The e-book version is free to Amazon Prime members, and if you're not a member, you can still sign up for a free Kindle review copy by filling out the form accessible via this URL: https://forms.gle/GLQiqEnm6WDKsohe6. Message me if you want a clickable version of the link. Regardless of sales, I would love for anybody interested to be aware of and read my book. Reading the book will be like taking a stroll in the late #Jurassic #MorrisonFormation ecosystem of North America 150 million years ago with scientifically accurate scenery, sounds, and plants. Some Jurassic species in the story include: #Allosaurus #Amphicotylus #Apatosaurus #Archaeopteryx #Barosaurus #Brachiosaurus #Brontosaurus #Camarasaurus #Camptosaurus #Ceratosaurus #Coelurus #Diplodocus #Dryosaurus #Eutretauranosuchus #Fruitachampsa #Fruitadens #Harpactognathus #Hesperornithoides #Kepodactylus #Marshosaurus #Mesadactylus #Mymoorapelta #Nanosaurus #Ornitholestes #Saurophaganax #Stegosaurus #Supersaurus #Torvosaurus

"The Shield of Mygatt-Moore" is the name of the earliest armoured dinosaurs to roam the world, creating a dynesty that would last until the reign of the dinosaurs came to an end 66 million years ago. This is Mymoorapelta maysi! This small walking tank is one of the earliest members of the Ankylosaurs: a family of armoured dinosaurs that are part of a group called Thyreophora. Translating to "Shield Bearers", the lineage of this group also includes the Ankylosaurs predecessors: the Stegosaurs, with their large dorsal plates and spiked tails. But Ankylosaurs evolved differently. Split into two families; Ankylosauridae and Nodosauridae, the main feature of both these families is the fused bone that covers the animals neck, back and tail, making them almost impenetrable to tooth and claw. These various protrusions of bone were called oesteoderms. But while the prior family often had a large collection of fused bone at the end of its tail, forming a club, the latter did not, instead having various spikes running down the edges of their tails. Mymoorapelta was a member of Nodosauridae. Dating back to roughly 150 Million Years ago, towards the end of the Jurassic period. Reaching 12 ft in length and weighing over half a tonne, this animal was founded in 1995 in Mygatt-Moore Quarry, Mesa County, Colorado USA, within the Morrison Formation, central USA. But while it's much larger descendants would dominate the Cretaceous period, these smaller herbivores planted the seeds for this family of tanks to thrive in the future. Photos 1 and 2 are of a skeletal cast of Mymoorapelta maysi at Dinosaur Ridge museum in Fruita, Colorado, USA. Photos 3 and 4 are of an oesteodermal spike of Mymoorapelta at the same museum. IT HAPPENED: I FOUND AN OSTEODERM FROM MYMOORAPELTA! . This bad boy slowly emerged while digging a pedestal for a vertebra… I saw a few neurovascular grooves and pits and immediately thought it was an osteoderm… we weren’t 100% sure while it was in the ground but once it popped out… there was no mistaking this beautiful little piece of Jurassic ankylosaur armor! A bone from a Jurassic ankylosaur sees light for the first time in 152 million years! . At the beginning of the summer I put out a bounty for any fossil material from Mymoorapelta… and today @museumsofwesternco volunteer, Tom Lawrence, uncovered an osteoderm! This is the second osteoderm that Tom has found during his time digging in the Mygatt-Moore Quarry. . The Mygatt-Moore Quarry is the type locality for Mymoorapelta (the shield of Mygatt-Moore) and it is thought that material from several individuals is preserved here due to the stratigraphic position of osteoderms, like the one found today, found throughout the quarry. . Mymoorapelta has been such an important dinosaur for me that it was an incredible experience to actually see this bone in the ground and to ID it in the field! . The reward for this bounty? I owe Tom some ice cream! . Photo 1: Tom Lawrence examining his amazing discovery . Video: a full look at the osteoderm back in the fossil preparation lab at the Dinosaur Journey Museum . #museummonday! . Welcome to our summer office: The Mygatt-Moore Quarry. . Discovered in 1981 by JD and Vanetta Moore and Pete and Marilyn Mygatt (for whom the quarry is named), the Mygatt-Moore Quarry (MMQ) represents an attritional deposit where bones accumulated within a vernal pool environment. The MMQ preserves a relatively low diversity of dinosaur species with Apatosaurus, Allosaurus, and Mymoorapelta comprising the bulk of specimens collected with some material from Camarasaurus, a Diplodocine, and Ceratosaurus making up a smaller proportion. . Some fun facts about the MMQ: this is the type locality and namesake for Mymoorapelta; there is extensive evidence of feeding by both theropod dinosaurs and invertebrates on bones; some of these traces highlight cannibalism in Allosaurus! . Here Megan (Paleontology Field Assistant) and I can be seen early in the season setting up a grid to assist us with the continued mapping of bones from the quarry. Decades of excavations in this quarry have resulted in thousands of bones and ensuring that bone maps are consistent is critically important. . #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #paleontologist #biology #geology #science #naturalhistory #museum #fieldwork #dinosaur #fossil #bone #jurassic #morrison #colorado #apatosaurus #camarasaurus #diplodocus #allosaurus #ceratosaurus #mymoorapelta @museumsofwesternco

Armored Skull! #Mymoorapelta is a tiny (10’) primitive #nodosaurid and has a typical #ankylosaurid #skull, heavily armored. It reminded me of that of a #GilaMonster which is one of my favorite #lizards. I have spent most of my life in the deserts of #Arizona, born and raised in the outskirts, which allowed me to interact with all manner of #desert critters. As a child I picked up a Gila Monster. It hissed and wriggled but fortunately didn’t bite me. I certainly would do no such thing today! Sadly, I have only found dead ones in the wild these last 20 years. Plenty of hastily driving to where one has been spotted but, alas, only those in zoos and wildlife rehab centers have been my pics. Someday! The Gila Monster I grew up with, #Heloderma suspectum, "studded skin, suspect") was named by Cope in 1869. He is said to have said, "...though the lizards of this genus could not be proven to inflict a poisonous bite, yet that the salivary glands of the lower jaw were emptied by an efferent duct which issued at the basis of each tooth, and in such a way that the saliva would be conveyed into the would by the deep groove of the crown.", thus he suspected it was poisonous ("Orange and black venom in the sac!"-BC). As Cope "suspected" these lizards do have venom. To deliver they have to bite and hold. I grew up being told if I was ever bitten to promptly submerge the lizard's head in a bucket of water (always have water in the desert, and lots of it!) to force it release as it has no desire to suffocate. It is often placed in my all-time favorite clade name, #Monstersauria, "Monster Lizards", though they have been tied to varanids (think Komodos, my second favorite lizard!). Fossils of #Estesia indicate they were venomous in the Late Cretaceous, 75 mya. #Gobiderma is another possible ancestor, both from Mongolia desert environs, similar to the sweet Gilas today! Anyone know why it’s head is so ossified? Protection of some sort, but I know not from what. #FossilCrates #dinosaurs #dinosaur #dino #paleontology #geology #museum #fossils #fossil #dinosaursofinstagram #ilovedinos #prehistoric #extinct #scicomm #stem #naturalhistory

A quick trip to @museumsofwesternco to measure some Mymoorapelta maysi material and I got a chance to see the Cactus Park specimen! . This ankylosaur is preserved in some crazy hard rock… here you can see me holding the lower law which is mostly prepared. You can just barely see all of the tiny leaf-shaped teeth emerging from the stone. . This specimen is one of only a handful of Jurassic age ankylosaur specimens from North America and is particularly important because it is contains one of only a few skulls. . Both mechanical and chemical preparation techniques have been used in an effort to prepare this ankylosaur but the well-cemented sandstone isn’t giving up this fossil without a fight. Mymoorapelta Mymoorapelta was a very primitive ankylosaur. It was one of the few that lived during the Jurassic period. It is usually classified as being in Polacanthidae, but there is some debate, since it is so primitive, whether or not it deserves its own family. It was named after Mygatt-Moore, the quarry in which its fossil remails were found. It was about 3 meters long and the thick armour on its body was intended to provide protection from large Jurassic age predators such Allosaurus. #paleoart #art #digitalart #photoshop #realistic #dinosaur #dinosaurs #prehistoric #prehistory #paleontology #nature #evolution #artwork #illustration #exinct #animals #science #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #jurassicworlddominion #fossil #reptile #beast #wild #ankylosaurs #mymoorapelta

23 new dinosaurs and counting!!! Dr. James "Jim" Kirkland is one of the most dynamic #paleontologists ever and is our guest this Saturday, 2/26, at 11 AM PST/2 PM EST on PaleoPortals. The bottom of this post has info on how to join. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim for the first time at Dinamation in 1994. His kindness and warmth to a brand new graduate student (me :-)) has always been deeply appreciated. I still recall seeing the fossils he was working on, touching #Utahraptor elements up close and personal still makes me grin ear to ear! We spent a few hours looking at fossils that day and every SVP meeting he was equally kind with him time and info. I cannot wait to hear what he is up to, Jim always has multiple awesome projects going on. I am certain we will hear about the incredible Utahraptor block and the new Utahraptor State Park. He has named 23 dinosaurs including the world-changing Utahraptor, my-world-changing #Mymoorapelta (we will probably discuss my experience with this #ankylosaurid this Saturday, suffice to say the realization that all I had read in books was up for debate… :-)), #Zuniceratops which I see almost daily and is near and dear to my heart, plus the awesomely named #Diabloceratops and a host of additional dinosaurs. You may not be aware that Jim is also an expert on #ammonites and a first-rate #geologist. He is the State Paleontologist for Utah via the Utah Geological Survey and they couldn't have a better ambassador. He takes complex topics and breaks them down into digestible content, all in a fantastic presentation style. This one is not to be missed! Not a Member of PaleoPortals? Happy #fossilfriday! . This is Gastonia burgei, an ankylosaur from the Yellow Cat Member of the Cedar Mountain Formation of eastern Utah. . Gastonia is named after Robert Gaston, the discoverer of the site where Gastonia was first discovered. This ankylosaur is incredibly important for many reasons. The site that Robert found is a bonebed that contains the remains of several individuals - something very rare for ankylosaurs. Gastonia is also the ankylosaur responsible for the resurrection for the Polacanthinae: a subfamily of ankylosaurs. . In 1998 paleontologist Jim Kirkland described Gastonia and noticed various intermediate features, features that are also present in other ankylosaurs such as Polacanthus and Mymoorapelta. Kirkland recovered a monophyletic branch of ankylosaurs, near the base of the ankylosauridae, to contain this group and called it the Polacanthinae. . Over the years this group has gone through many revisions and has been challenged by various phylogenetic studies. However, in 2021 Madzia et al., formally defined the Polacanthinae as a subfamily of ankylosaurs within the Nodosauridae. These authors did highlight how tricky this group has been in the literature and noted the possibility of the group one day being elevated formally to the family level depending on future discoveries. . As it usually is with paleontology, more specimens is really the key to resolving the enigmatic Polacanthine ankylosaurs! . #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #paleontologist #biology #geology #science #naturalhistory #museum #dinosaur #fossil #bone #cretaceous #ankylosaur #gastonia #mymoorapelta #polacanthus #polacanthinae

Happy #fossilfriday! . This is Gargoyleosaurus parkpinorum; along with Mymoorapelta maysi it is one of only two currently known Late Jurassic ankylosaurs from North America! . Gargoyleosaurus unsurprisingly means “Gargoyle Lizard” thanks to its gnarly looking skull! The holotype of Gargoyleosaurus was discovered in the famous Bone Cabin Quarry from Wyoming which has also produced material from Apatosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, Diplodocus, Allosaurus, Ornitholestes, Dryosaurus, and fellow thyreophoran Stegosaurus! . This early ankylosaur, much like its contemporaneous cousin Mymoorapelta, has jumped all over the ankylosaur family tree having been placed within the Ankylosauridae, the Nodosauridae, and even the potential Polacanthidae. . The holotype of Gargoyleosaurus, unlike Mymoorapelta, was found largely articulated and has a nearly complete skull which has made it critically important for studying early ankylosaurs! . Gargoyleosaurus was small for an ankylosaur only reaching lengths of around 3-3.5 meters making it one of the smallest quadrupedal herbivores from the Morrison Formation… but who needs size when you have armor?! . #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #paleontologist #biology #geology #science #naturalhistory #museum #dinosaur #fossil #bone #jurassic #ankylosaur #gargoyleosaurus #mymoorapelta #morrison #wyoming

Finally coming face-to-face with the holotype of Mymoorapelta maysi at the Dinosaur Journey Museum! . At the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry we have recovered associated elements from what we presume to be an individual Mymoorapelta. After preparing the bones of this dinosaur, I had questions about the identifications of certain bones so having the opportunity to work with the original material from the Mygatt-Moore Quarry was incredible! . Nothing beats getting your hands on specimens and seeing them for yourself! Reviewing this material has given clarity to several bones from our quarry but has also raised questions about others. . Science is collaborative. Collections like those at the Dinosaur Journey Museum allow other institutions like ours to better understand the material that we are working on and our collections will hopefully help others in their research. By working collaboratively on this dinosaur we will all hopefully have a better understanding of this impressive ancient armored beast! . @museumsofwesternco . Welcome to the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry (HBDQ)! . Excavations began at this site in 2008 after a team from the @burpeemuseum discovered the site with help from Bureau of Land Management in 2007. . The HBDQ represents a channel sandstone that cuts through the traditional layered mudstones of the Bushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation (~150-145 Ma). These rock units, as well as the petrified logs and freshwater clams that we find through the quarry, allow us to understand what this environment was like during the Late Jurassic: a braided fluvial system, with giant trees and occasional overflowing rivers with an arid atmosphere that often led to droughts and ephemeral ponds. . The HBDQ contains fossils from Allosaurus, Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Stegosaurus, Mymoorapelta, Dryosaurus, Nanosaurus, and possibly Barosaurus and Tanycolagreus. The bones from these dinosaurs are disarticulated and piled together like a logjam. The current hypothesis for this preservation is that these bones likely were carried downstream from where the animals actually died, only to be deposited where we are finding them now at the HBDQ. . #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #paleontologist #biology #geology #science #naturalhistory #museum #fieldwork #blm #blmpaleo #bureauoflandmanagement #utah #jurassic #morrison #dinosaur #fossil #skeleton #bone #allosaurus #apatosaurus #diplodocus #camarasaurus #stegosaurus #mymoorapelta #dryosaurus #nanosaurus #barosaurus #tanycolagreus

On our way to Grand Junction, Colorado for supplies today, we made a pit stop at the Mygatt-Moore Quarry! . Discovered in 1981 by John D. and Vanetta Moore and Peter and Marilyn Mygatt, this quarry, similar to the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry, is in the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation. . Thousands of bones have been mapped and recovered from this Jurassic site including those of Allosaurus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Ceratosaurus, and even the holotype of Mymoorapelta; the first Jurassic Ankylosaur from North America, which has been found at the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry as well (even the name Mymoorapelta means “the shield of Mygatt and Moore)! . Many of these bones can be seen prepared and on display at @museumsofwesternco and there is a fantastic interpretive path at the site full of exposed bones... and a glorious collard lizard (photo courtesy of Josh Mathews because my camera is terrible)! . #fossilfriday #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #paleontologist #biology #geology #science #naturalhistory #museum #fieldwork #blm #blmpaleo #bureauoflandmanagement #utah #jurassic #morrison #dinosaur #fossil #skeleton #bone #mygattmoorequarry #mwcpaleo #allosaurus #apatosaurus #camarasaurus #ceratosaurus #mymoorapelta #collardlizard

If you’re regularly reading my page, you might also be familiar with its lesser known denizens such as Camarasaurus, Ornitholestes, Camptosaurus, Dryosaurus, Barosaurus, Torvosaurus and #Ceratosaurus. I hazard to say that I imagine even the most avid dino-lover might be hard-pressed to name today’s featured guest. This is #Mymoorapelta (my-moor-ah-PEL-tah)!⁣ ⁣ She was a dinosaur not typically associated with the Morrison Formation, or the #Jurassic Period in general. She’s an #ankylosaur! Typically found in the later #Cretaceous Period, ankylosaurs are famous for their wide bodies, weaponized tails, and impressive #armor. Mymoorapelta was no different that her later relatives (albeit a bit smaller). She was covered from beak to tail in large, sturdy osteoderms (bones in the skin). What you’re seeing on her mounted #skeleton are actually just the bony cores of this armor. Actually, these cores would be covered in a thick layer of keratin (the same material that makes up your fingernails and hair) and would exaggerate the shape. In life, Mymoorapelta would be absolutely bristling with #horns and #spikes. In addition to these prickly deterrents, she also sported a large “pelvic shield” of fused osteoderms over her pelvis to create an even more impenetrable defense against possible attack.⁣ ⁣ Being one of the earliest known ankylosaurs, Mymoorapelta is a little difficult to place evolutionarily. Ankylosaurs of the Cretaceous are generally categorized into two groups: the ankylosaurids characterized by deep, rounded snouts and distinctive tail clubs, and the nodosaurids characterized by generally longer armor spikes, and their notable lack of tail clubs. Given Mymoorapelta’s spiky armor, low, triangular skull and clubless tail, it’s thought that she might actually be one of the oldest known nodosaurids!⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #paleo #paleontology #paleontologist #fossil #bone #scicomm #science #jurassicpark

Sorry for the delay @iguanadrawn but I was finally able to get around to finishing this entry. I honestly had no idea ankylosauroids were this old until I looked up this guy, it’s one of the oldest members of its family (and not easy to draw either, especially from this angle). Hope it came out decently enough. #jurassicjune #paleoart #mymoorapelta #ankylosaur #dinosaur #artchallenge #jurassicjune2020

#jurassicjune2020 - Day 23: #mymoorapelta maysi •~ Alongside #gargoyleosaurus parkpinorium, Mymoorapelta is one of the earliest known ankylosaurs, coming from the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation of western Colorado, USA. It’s known from portions of a disarticulated skull, parts of the three different skeletons and other postcranial remains. Its position within the suborder #Ankylosauria, had been debated by scientists - initially believed to be Ankylosauria incerate sedis (taxonomic group where it’s boarder relationships are unknown/undefined), before being placed in the Family #Polacanthidae, and then being a basal #nodosaurid by 2011. •~ • • •~ I really like how I handled this guy. Seems a little too tall for my likings but otherwise pretty accurate imo. •~ • • #dino #dinosaur #dinosaurs #art #artwork #draw #drawing #paleoart #sketch #sketches #jurassicpark #jurassicworld #thelostworld #fallenkingdom #theisle #jurassicworldthegame #ankylosaurus #pathoftitans #arksurvivalevolved #jurassicjune #jurassic #june #2020

I want to start the new year off right, so I’ve decided to do an introduction into myself and what I hope to accomplish with social media for any followers who do not know me personally! . For starters my name is Dan Large. I’m that kid who saw #jurassicpark when I was around 1 or 2, and since that day dinosaurs have been my ultimate passion! . I received my B.S. in Geology and Environmental Geosciences with a Biology minor from @northern_illinois_university. . I call the @burpeemuseum my home and work as a Fossil Preparator and Collections Assistant, as well as an expedition leader for the museum’s annual digs. . I also work part-time as a Learning Lab Facilitator at the @dupagechildrens teaching STEM courses both in the museum and through outreach to schools. . I have had the opportunity to work in three of the most iconic fossil bearing units in the United States; the late Cretaceous Hell Creek formation in Montana, the late Jurassic Morrison formation in Utah, and the late Triassic Chinle formation in Utah. . As a Fossil Preparator I have worked on well over a dozen species of dinosaur including Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, Stegosaurus and Diplodocus, as well as Anzu and Mymoorapelta. I have also worked on many non-dinosaur fossils including crocodile, fish and even leaves. . My goal with social media is to express my passion for all things paleontology with the hopes that anyone who sees my work here will hopefully learn something new, and just maybe will share in this passion with me! . #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #biology #geology #science #museum #lab #fossil #dinosaur #trex #tyrannosaurusrex #triceratops #stegosaurus #diplodocus #anzu #mymoorapelta #hellcreek #morrison #chinle #montana #utah #illinois #outreach #stem #education

The Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry is known for its sauropod material but it does have a few other things... including the extremely rare Mymoorapelta! . Mymoorapelta means “Mygatt and Moore’s Shield” after the Mygatt-Moore Quarry where it was first discovered and studied by Harley Armstrong, Jim Kirkland and Ken Carpenter in 1994. . Mymoorapelta maysi is the only species and was the first Ankylosaur (armored dinosaur) to be found in the Jurassic Period. Mymoorapelta along with Gargoyleosaurus, a fellow Morrison Ankylosaur, are helping to shed light on the early evolution of this group of dinosaurs. . #fossilfriday #paleo #paleontology #paleobiology #biology #geology #science #museum #dinosaur #fossil #skeleton #bone #mymoorapelta #gargoyleosaurus #ankylosaur #jurassic #utah #colorado #hanksvilleburpeedinosaurquarry #mygattmoorequarry

#mymoorapelta -- a dino ALMOST as tough as its (and my) namesake. We lost an all-time great today, folks. My Grandpa Pete Mygatt (the "My-" of Mymoorapelta) was one of the orneriest, toughest, warmest, funniest, most exciting and excited people I have known. From eating to driving to rockhounding and dino hunting to loving, he did everything with enthusiasm -- never half-assed. He lit up every room he was ever in, and he taught me so much, like how to spot bone in the rocks, how to drive with both feet, and how to live each day so you can look at yourself in the mirror at night. He taught me to love reading and ribs, to marry the love of your life, to work relentlessly and play even harder. I'll be raising a cold one to you tonight. Rest In Peace, GP. Love you, LP.

Today's fossil is a vertebra from a Jurassic herbivore called Mymoorapelta. Mymoorapelta was an ankylosaur that inhabited Western Colorado during the late Jurassic. It was covered in large spines that deterred predators. It isn't common to see a vertebra in this good of a condition. The more delicate, thin portions of the bone are usually broken off before or during fossilization, leaving only the thicker body behind. #mymoorapelta #jurassic #dino #dinosaur #dinosaurs #education #museum #fossils #fossil #rock #rocks #geology #geologyrocks #paleontology
