#FossilFriday 🐢 Dorset’s own turtle! 🐢 This turtle was named 'Dorsetochelys delairi' because it was first found in Dorset. This specific example is also a ‘holotype’, meaning it is the specimen used to describe the species. How cool is that?! However, there is a problem with classifying some turtle fossils because they tend to be found as either skulls, in this case, or shells (carapace) as with most of the fossil turtles on this database. Unfortunately, matching the skull (see 1st 3 images) to the shells (see last 2 images) can be an issue and we don’t know which type of shell this skull belongs to. This turtle from the Lower Cretaceous Purbeck Limestone Group was found near Swanage and is now part of the @DorsetMuseum collection Find out more on our website (link in bio).

#paleoarte #paleoartist #paleoart #palaeoart #palaeoartwork #palaeoart #palaeoartwork #paleostream #prehistory #prehistoricanimals #prehistoric #paleo #palaeoart #palaeontologist #mammut #mammuthuscolumbi #mammut #art #artgallery #pastelchalks #pastelchalksketch #pastelchalkart #pastelchalkdrawing #pastelcolors #draw #oilpaint #oilpainting #oilpaintingart #oilpaintingartist

I have to join in with Nautilus Sunday... Here's a before and after of a couple of Lyme Regis 12 inch bangers.... The first ammonite fossil that I ever found 35 years ago from Scunthorpe Ironworks quarry a very nice specimen of Asteroceras stellare... Scunthorpe Museum had organised a visit to the quarry and part of that was to look in a pile of the rock to for fossils.... I didn't think it was complete after a few hours tapping at the rock with a masonry nail and hammer but fortunately I left it for a few years until I met Mike Marshall.... He cleaned it for me but didn't polish it as he described it as a good quality specimen of and infrequently found from there.... It sparked an interest.... #geology #rock #fossil #fossils #fossilhunt #ammonite #beachfind #lowerjurassic #paleo #uppercarboniferous #palaentology #ammonitefossil #lymeRegisfossil #somerset #somersetcoast #somersetcoastammonite #whitby #whitbyfossil #plantfossil #cenoceras #coroniceras #treasure #paleo #palaeontologist #nature #naturaltreasure #fossiladdict #fossilcollector #fossilprep #fossilhunting #luckyfind

I found this Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) tibia a few weeks ago on the Isle of Wight coast. I’m not sure how old it is, it could be modern to be honest, but it’s still a nice found. It’s also extremely worn, which can be best seen in the last 3 images. That other Roe Deer tibia was found a few months ago by @missemiliaevans and in comparison it’s much older and in way better shape. But still, it’s always useful to have more specimens for comparison! #palaeontology #fossils #fossilwatch #fossiladdict #fossil #paleo #paleontology #pleistocene #palaeontologist #palaeo #palaeontologistinthemaking #iceagefossils #mammalfossil #mammoth #dinosaur #dinosaurs #dinosaurlover #devensian #fossilfriday

#FossilFriday This highly distinctive bivalve shell comes from the Corallian, Upper Jurassic rocks around Osmington. It is from a genus called Myophorella, but used to be known as Trigonia because of the distinctive triangular shape of the shell. It was reclassified when researchers reviewed the group and this reflects the constant refinements made in science. As collections grow and new research techniques emerge, we have the opportunity to re-group and re-classify specimens. As a result, some names have been lost. Sometimes the old name is referred to in brackets to help avoid confusion, for example, Myophorella (Trigonia) clavellata. This Upper Jurassic bivalve is part of the collection at All Hallows Museum, Honiton.

Going in the Opencast coalmines was a great experience and occasionally beside fossils I noticed a bit of history... These coalseams close to the surface were accessed in the late 1800s and dug by hand by miners.... The pillars of coal were left to support the roof of the excavation and the grey shale infill is where the roof has collapsed into the old workings.... Must of been tough guys working on their hands and knees for buckets of coal in this way.... Pulmonoscorpius kirktonensis Jeram, 1993 (Scorpiones: Centromachidae) Viséan, Lower Carboniferous East Kirkton Limestone, Strathclyde Group East Kirkton, West Lothian, Scotland This exquisite articulated specimen is the largest in Jeram’s 1993 description. This fabulous photos was shared with me by a colleague in about 2016 while I was working on my MSc thesis on scorpion evolution. The material is housed at National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh. This is around 35 cm long I believe this species has been popularly wildly exaggerated in size based on a fragment Jeram estimated could have been from a much larger individual, but it’s far from certain. So I finally got around to posting this. Let me introduce you to Trinity the Tyrannosaurus rex, currently being exhibited in the Aathal Dinosaur Museum in Zürich, Switzerland. But this was such an amazing opportunity! Growing up and following my passion into palaeontology who knew I'd get the chance to work on an actual Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton! Hopefully soon Team Trex (tagged in this post) can report on the findings of Trinity, keep an eye out. Recently Trinity and Team Trex have been getting a lot of media coverage, first with the @portsmouthuni and now the BBC! But I cannot stress what an amazing opportunity this was and I look forward to the future of my palaeontology career. Teignmouth Breccia Formation Cisuralian Series (lower Permian) Shaldon, Devon, England. A thick unit of the New Red Sandstone containing red mudstones and sandstones and most prominently, poorly sorted, matrix-supported breccia containing clasts of Devonian and Carboniferous slates, cherts, and igneous rocks. Breccia forms when rock is displaced and compacted, but does has not been transported far and so the clasts are not weathered into pebbles. It is inferred these rocks were laid down in an alluvial fan. I was surprised to learn more about these rocks. I assumed they were Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) as I happened to by essentially in the type area for the Devonian System! A huge breadth of geological time is covered by the Devon coastline. #geology #stratigraphy #pangaea #devon #rocks #geologyrocks #paleo #paleontology #paleontologist #palaeo #palaeontology #palaeontologist #museum #curator #outfit #outdoors #geography #fossil #fossils #fossiladdict

This #fossilfriday I thought I'd showcase some pyritic fossils because pyrite (FeS2), more commonly known as fool's gold, is a very common mineral along the Yorkshire coast! As you can see in the first two pictures, pyrite can produce some beautiful fossils. However, its oxidation can lead to pyrite decay, essentially "rotting" away the fossil and eventually destroying it. This means some fossils containing pyrite may need to be treated using pyrite stop - a chemical which prevents further damage to the fossil by pyrite. This is only one of the challenges that pyrite causes for collectors and preparators along the Yorkshire coast - fossils containing pyrite can be much more difficult to prepare, as it is much harder and more dense than many other minerals. ------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Ammonite fragment from Hornsea. 2. Two small ammonites from the Holderness Coast. 3. A pyrite crystal. 4. A very, very small pyritised ammonite! 5. Fossil vertebrae unearthed in a mine in western India are the remains of one of the largest snakes that ever lived, a monster estimated at up to 15 metres in length – longer than a T rex. Scientists have recovered 27 vertebrae from the snake, including a few still in the same position as they would have been when the reptile was alive. They said the snake, which they named Vasuki indicus, would have looked like a large python and would not have been venomous. The lignite mine where the fossil was found is located in Panandhro, in the western state of Gujarat. “Considering its large size, Vasuki was a slow-moving ambush predator that would subdue its prey through constriction like anacondas and pythons. This snake lived in a marshy swamp near the coast at a time when global temperatures were higher than today,” said Debajit Datta, a postdoctoral researcher in palaeontology at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and the lead author of the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday. Because of the incomplete nature of the Vasuki remains, the researchers gave an estimated length range of 11-15 metres and 1 tonne in weight. Vasuki, named after the snake king associated with the Hindu deity Shiva, rivals in size another huge prehistoric snake called Titanoboa, whose fossils were discovered in a coalmine in northern Colombia in 2009. Titanoboa, estimated at 13 metres long and more than 1 tonne, lived between 58m and 60m years ago. The largest living snake today is Asia’s reticulated python at 10 metres. “The estimated body length of Vasuki is comparable to that of Titanoboa, although the vertebrae of Titanoboa are slightly larger than those of Vasuki. However, at this point, we cannot say if Vasuki was more massive or slender compared to Titanoboa,” said Sunil Bajpai, a palaeontologist, professor at Roorkee and the study’s co-author. Earth Day! Arcimboldo’s Palaeontologist. Arcimboldo was a 16th Century Italian painter who constructed faces from fruit, veg, fish, flowers and all sorts. It was pointed out to me by someone from the Geological Society of London that he never made one of his mad portraits from fossils. So I filled the gap… is it a self portrait? Or is it an allegory of how the Earth Sciences are changing from dusty old men in the extractive industries raping the planet to a new younger and more inclusive generation caring for the Earth and all that’s in it. The choice is yours, but either way it’s on show at the TAAG Gallery. #earthday #arcimboldo #palaeontology #palaeontologist @brispalmedia @geoscientistmag @natural_history_museum @tec_kimmeridge @earthsci_sta #arthistory #yellowroomartists @museelouvre #thephotographicartthief #annagrayson #pastichephotography @jurassiccoastofficial @iainsstewart @vickycoules_art #geology #womengeologists @taag_teignmouth

A new photographic portrait of 50 women leaders in Ireland has been unveiled at Trinity College Dublin. The new tableau showcases an all-female cast of prominent artists, social activists, sports figures and scholars, including former President of Ireland Mary Robinson and UCC palaeontologist Professor Maria McNamara. The portrait is a re-enactment of The School of Athens, a famous fresco painted by the classical artist Raphael in The Vatican between 1509 and 1511. The original fresco includes 50 male figures that represent important philosophers, mathematicians and scientists of the day. This painting is considered the quintessential symbol of classical knowledge and education during the Renaissance. It also endorsed the Greek educational system that persisted in Europe for centuries, whereby privileged white European men presided over educational directions and priorities for over 500 years. These male characters are replaced by women in the Irish portrait. The portrait will be the subject of a documentary that will explore the project and will feature conversations with the women subjects and their ideas about education and social needs for now and the future. Professor Maria McNamara, participant in the project, said “This project highlights the transformative social change that Western society has seen since the painting of Raphael’s fresco. Five hundred years ago, it would have been unthinkable to consider the existence of female professors, sporting champions, politicians and activists, let alone to gather them in one space and celebrate their achievements. This tableau project places social change and greater educational opportunities for women front and centre. The women participating in the event, however, spoke about shared ongoing challenges, including persistent tension between legacy societal expectations of women and career success and unequal treatment of women and men in both the workplace and in educational settings. Gender equity is still a goal and not a reality, so initiatives like this provide us with an important opportunity to take stock and consider the path to a more equal society.”

A couple more Pliosaur ribs rough prepped this evening. The top rib is complete (I have the rest in another slab), the bottom rib has been bitten through either during predation or scavenging! Part of the skeleton I found last year. Most of the rough prep is nearly done now, just a couple more pieces to work on and then it will be ready for abrasion. #pliosaur #jurassic #kimmeridgeclay #kimmeridgeclayformation #fossils #fossilhunt #fossilhunting #fossilhunter #geology #geoscience #ancient #paleontology #palaeontology #paleontologist #palaeontologist #fossils #marinereptile #marinereptiles #geologist #geoscientist #fossil #fossilfinds #fossiliensuche #halloween #fossiler #fossilcollector #rare #nature #pliosaurus #monster #incredible
