It’s been over a year since Flora of Southeast Asia Botanical Art Exhibition opened at Singapore Botanic Gardens. 🥹🫶 Here’s the finished watercolor painting of a Nepenthes armin, my demo piece during the VIP opening of the exhibition. This pitcher plant is endemic to Sibuyan, Philippines and is considered as critically endangered. 🌸 Dessin d’observation – Fleur de Merisier / Prunus Avium - Technique : mine de graphite J'ai réalisé cette étude dans le cadre du cours « Drawing Nature, Science and Culture » sur edX. L’objectif était d'apprendre à observer et à retranscrire l'ensemble des éléments d'une fleur de manière précise. J'ai ainsi observé une fleur de merisier et expliqué les différents stades de son inflorescence, son anatomie, la façon dont elle se réparti et se raccorde au reste de l'arbre, et toutes autres observations nécessaires à sa description. C'est fou comme on peut apprendre lorsqu'on prend le temps d’observer avec attention ! Auparavant, je me demandais souvent : « à quoi bon passer des heures à dessiner quand on peut prendre une photo en une seconde ? ». J'ai toujours été fasciné par les fossiles, et grâce à ce cours, j'ai pu combiner mon amour pour l'art et la science en observant attentivement et en dessinant en détail ces fossiles. Completed a second picture with my layered series about pollinators - this one all about Hawk Moths. Here’s some things I learnt about these cool little creatures in the process. 1. If you like papaya, you can thank hawk moths. They are the most significant pollinator of papaya (pawpaw) crops. 2. They have a super long tongue that helps them get nectar from flowers that other pollinators struggle to access 3. There are hundreds of different types of hawk moths around the world, often really beautiful. The ‘death’s-head hawk moth’ features in the Silence of the Lambs poster. I’ve drawn a papaya tree in the background, with a couple of hawk moths nearby. 🦉🖋 Another bit of homework from @uni_newcastle Natural History Illustration online course: finding real (alive or taxidermied) animals to sketch from. I decided to sketch a series of three from @qldmuseum 's exhibit, using a set of brown-palette charcoal pencils I hardly use, on cardboard, like one of the tutorials did (then penning in the features). That way you can use the white pencil for highlights, which I loved seeing the effect of.
