I was just minding my own business, staring into the sky & day dreaming, when this tiny fella appeared. He didn’t appear hurt but he clearly couldn’t fly properly yet. The best thing to do with babies is to leave them be as parents are usually near by, but unfortunately, this guy was too near the road to be left so I ushered him to the nearest bit of grass & foliage for safety. Alright friends, you’re not going to like this, but I have a hard truth for you: plastic recycling is a lie. As we’ve been discussing at #INC4, some countries believe the #plasticstreaty should focus on downstream measures, thinking only plastic waste needs to be addressed (not production). They advocate that recycling and improved waste management systems are the solution to the plastic crisis, but this isn’t correct. Here are the facts: only 8% of plastic waste gets recycled. The majority of plastic waste (nearly 70%) ends up in landfills, whether you intended it for recycling or not. Why? Plastics come in various types and forms, making recycling processes complex and costly - different types can’t be mixed together due to differences in melting points, and contamination from food residues and labels complicates things further. Add to this limited infrastructure, particularly in developing countries, and low economic incentives for recycling because virgin plastic is cheaper to produce, and, well, it doesn’t look good. Could all of this change? Maybe. We could improve our recycling ability and this is definitely part of the solution, but its effectiveness is limited without addressing the root cause of plastic pollution: overproduction and single-use packaging. There’s no two ways about it: if we want to stop the #plasticpollution crisis, we need to stop producing the majority of plastic and start creating alternatives. Honestly, this is not something that can be done at a consumer level (we’ll get into this tomorrow) but there are still things you can do. Check what products are made from, read labels. Contact your local recycling centre and see what they can recycle. Don’t assume that just because it should be recycled, it is. Above all, start making better, conscious choices about the products you buy and do your best to find alternatives. I know it doesn’t feel like much, but remember, what we’re really doing is changing our collection consciousness about consumption and everyone has the power to help with that. DAY 3 Princess Bay Beach to the start of Lyall Bay Beach 1.80km . I was lucky enough to have one of my kiddos accompany me on this stretch today. And boy, was I thankful for his help as there was all sorts of nastiness out there today! Thankfully we found this used nappy before it exploded all of its little plastic bits all over. I’ve found several knife sheaths over the years but today I found the knife as well! The soggy old shoes in a plastic bag were a weird find. . The amount of rubbish really increased around the parking lot just outside of Waitaha Cove - fast food wrappers, vapes, wrappers from cooking in the parking lot... As the parking lot is frequently full of campervans, I’m going to guess a lot of this has been improperly discarded by people traveling through. Via @postclimate Every year, companies produce more than 400 million metric tons of plastic. Some of that plastic spills onto waterways or beaches, clogging streams or floating in the ocean. Some of it breaks down into tiny microplastics or nanoplastics that float in the air and enter human lungs, blood and organs. A new study in the journal Science Advances found that there was a direct relationship between a company’s production of plastic and the amount of branded plastic waste found in the environment. How does plastic enter our oceans? The answer may surprise you. According to a 2021 study, 80% of plastic waste comes from rivers and smaller streams. Seven of the top ten plastic-polluted rivers in the world are in the Philippines. Recent efforts have been made to clean up these rivers, most notably the Pasig River in Manila.
