New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, The Horticultural Society of New York (The Hort), and Rutgers University today, during Earth Week, announced the Pollinator Port Project to create habitats for at-risk native bee populations in select NYC DOT public plazas and Open Streets. As part of the project, ‘bee hotels’ and ‘bee bunkers’ will be installed, and vegetation will be planted to provide nourishment for bees and other pollinators. According to the United Nations’ Environment Programme, bees are essential for the planet and are a crucial part of the biodiversity needed to sustain life. Bees have fewer habitats in urban areas and often have long distances between green spaces in cities. The installations announced today will provide connections between other green spaces across the city and will attract tickle bees, a small, native bee species that rarely sting. New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez today announced the launch of the Open Streets season with more than 130 initial Open Streets to come online this spring, as well as programing details for this year’s annual Open Streets: Car Free Earth Day (CFED) on Saturday, April 20, which features 53 car-free streets and plazas throughout the five boroughs — the largest CFED event to date. Presented by WABC, this year’s CFED connects Open Streets and plazas while providing access to over 1,000 miles of NYC’s Bike Network, with each location showcasing public art or community programming—a significant increase from the 30 locations featured in the 2023 event. WXY Studio (@wxystudio), in partnership with SITU (@situ_fabrication @situ_nyc), recently unveiled guidelines as part of Dining Out NYC, NYC’s permanent outdoor dining program. • The "streeteries" that served as such a vital pandemic lifeline for restaurants were mostly improvised structures and frequently caused problems with trash and traffic. In August, Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation legalizing outdoor dining sheds permanently. In February, the city launched Dining Out NYC, which provides guidelines for building, maintaining and operating restaurant sheds. NYC Parks, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and the NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) on Tuesday unveiled student art along a 176-foot-long construction fence at the $14.8 million project that is transforming the Monsignor Raul Del Valle Square in Hunts Point, Bronx into a versatile public space surrounded by calmer traffic and improved pedestrian safety features. Today I co-chaired a hearing with the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to provide oversight on the future of the JFK airport.✈️ Council Member Selvena Brooks-Powers and I spoke with the NYCEDC to go over the current status of the JFK Redevelopmemt and its leasing, what projects are currently in place and how we are ensuring community input and equity in every step of the process. We spoke of the importance of having M/WBE contractors at the forefront of the renovation, CM Brooks-Powers bill Intro 134, and more. I look forward to working with New Yorkers, my colleagues, and the Administration toward a better JFK for all.
