Posted @withregram • @byleahspencer Before computerized screens, NY’s subway cars used rotating fabric scrolls with stations printed on them inside illuminated windows to display the train’s route. In the train we shot in, there were 12 of these sign windows in each train car, and we had 5 cars, so that alone is 60 signs. With the addition of doubles for cars playing twice as different routes and the train-front route signs, we made 163 directional car signs (though we only see 3 of them…). In place of fabric scrolls, the most practical alternative for us was to make the top 2 illuminated sections with black vinyl on milk plexiglass and the unlit bottom with printed vinyl mounted on showcard. Like the Bowery station, these car interiors had a mix of paint jobs, so that helped each car look like its own train. The MTA was able to supply all of the ads that run across the tops of the cars, but all other ad and sign holders had to be covered with new graphics. To figure out what and how much needed to be created, we scouted train cars at the @nytransitmuseum and got to ride on the exact train we’d be using in the Bronx’s rail yard for a dry run (10/10 perk of the job). We unfortunately didn’t realize until the day of that the window backlighting gave off a cooler white than the printed vinyl section. This actually made the vinyl look more illuminated than the backlit plexi… Knowing this would have saved the electric team a lot of work and made all of these graphics cheaper to produce, but it is good to know for the future how bright a warm white can look, especially in a dark and grungy environment. 25/36 - This photo is truly the peak moment of right place at the right time with lots of guessing and pinch of luck. First, I didn’t know for certain that the subway of New York would even be a place I’d have enough light to take a photo. Then getting the guy waiting close to the train in focus as this moment was pretty quick was definitely a challenge. But then something I didn’t notice and could have in no way predicted is that, on the guys arm is a US Flag patch and right as I pressed the shutter, the subway cart going by has a US flag on it too.
