Ughh dreaming of 80’s NYC

4/28/2024, 12:25:24 AM

1956 & today: Looking east on E 80th St from 5th Ave on the Upper East Side, Manhattan. . Smiling as radiant as ever in the old photo is actress Grace Kelly outside her New York apartment building at 988 5th Avenue. Just a few weeks after the photo was taken, Ms. Kelly would leave the silver screen and the States for good when she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in one of the most high-profile royal weddings of the 20th century.  . Grace Kelly’s first major film role was in the 1952 western High Noon where she starred alongside Gary Cooper. Next came 1953’s Mogambo with Clark Gable & Ava Gardner. In 1954, aged 25, Kelly won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film The Country Girl. However, Kelly is perhaps best well-known as the leading lady & favorite of director Alfred Hitchock’s famous blonde muses during his golden era. Under Hitchock’s direction, Grace Kelly would star in Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), & To Catch a Thief (1955). Her surprise engagement & marriage to the Prince of Monaco (whom she met in 1955) left a void which Hitchcock’s films which he struggled to fill in subsequent years. In an alternate universe, we might’ve seen Grace Kelly star in Vertigo, North by Northwest, & maybe even Psycho! . Princess Grace would have three children with Prince Rainier III (including Prince Albert II, the reigning Prince of Monaco) & would be active in various charitable organizations throughout the rest of her life. Tragically, she would lose her life as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident after she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at the wheel on Sep. 13, 1982. The princess would die from her injuries the following night at the age of 52. She is buried inside the Cathedral of our Lady Immaculate in Monaco. . . 📸 1956 photo by Lisa Larsen . . . #gracekelly #5thave #80thstreet #uppereastside #oldmanhattan #oldnyc #1950snyc #newyorkhistory #thewaywewere #princessgrace #5thavenue #oldnewyork #nyc1950s #nychistory #vintagenewyork #1950s #princessgraceofmonaco #50s #fifthave #1956 #uesnyc #1950sfashion #nycnostalgia #vintagenyc #princessgracekelly #1950sstyle #nycbeforeandafter

Repost from @nyc.beforeandafter 1964 & today: Looking north toward the Unisphere from United Nations Ave S in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens. Yesterday marks the 60th anniversary of the opening of the 1964 World’s Fair! Spread across 646 acres of Flushing Meadows, 80 nations, 24 US states and 45 corporations participated in the Fair whose central theme was “Peace Through Understanding”. To house all the attractions and exhibits, 140 pavilions were built as well as 110 different restaurants which offered visitors the opportunity to try and enjoy cuisines from across the globe. By the time the fair closed in October 1965, over 51 million people had visited. The focal point and symbol of the World’s Fair was the Unisphere structure, a 12-story-high stainless steel representation of the globe set amidst The Fountain of the Planets . In fact, it’s considered to be the world’s largest representation of the globe. The Unisphere was built by U.S. Steel and took 110 days to complete with the structure being dedicated in March 1964, one month before the World’s Fair’s opening. The Unisphere was designated a NYC landmark in 1995. To cover the ‘64 World’s Fair in just one post would be simply impossible and wouldn’t do it justice. That is why from now until October 2025, I am plan to create several posts highlighting different spots, pavilions, and attractions spread across the entire fair ground! So stay tuned as you’ll be seeing plenty more of Flushing Meadows for the next year and a half! And also, did you have the opportunity to visit the World’s Fair back in ‘64 or ‘65? Nike opened their 66,500-square-foot Niketown New York in 1996 on a site formerly occupied by the Bonwit Teller department store and later, after its demise, by Galeries Lafayette. The existing building was demolished to make way for a five-story building with a French department store-style central lightwell. With its brick facade and arched windows, the store intentionally bears a resemblance to an old-fashioned Manhattan school gymnasium, albeit with an extravagant Art Deco leaning. @everythingairmax . . . #nychistory #vintageny #vintagenyc #vintagenewyork #nycvintage #nyvintage #newyorkvintage #vintageamerica #vintageamericana #vintageusa #usavintage #americavintage

The story behind this piece is a rather awkward one. I painted Summer Magic, back in 2021. I was, at a point in my life where I knew that I wanted to paint all day, every day but I just didn’t know what! (The fruits series came later, in 2022) I bought some canvases, because that’s what painters do, right?! 😅 Then, I started to answer to magazines’ art calls, because that’s what artists who want to be discovered do, right?! 😅😅 And I found this art call themed Summer Magic. And I painted a bunch of paintings with Summer Magic literally written on it 😅😅😅 And this one is my absolute favourite 🌟 Doesn’t it feel so summery ??? ☀️🏖️🍹 Oil on canvas, 16x20 in. 1905 - Street scene at 28th St and Fifth Avenue. The Marble Collegiate Church still stands- along with a few other buildings. In the distance the original Waldorf Astoria is replaced by the Empire State Building. The Marble Collegiate Church, founded in 1628, is one of the oldest continuous Protestant congregations in North America. The congregation, which is part of two denominations in the Reformed tradition—the United Church of Christ and the Reformed Church in America—at 272 Fifth Avenue. It was built in 1854 in Romanesque Revival style with Gothic trim. The facade is covered in Tuckahoe marble, for which the church, originally called the Fifth Avenue Church, was renamed in 1906.

Posted @withregram • @byleahspencer Before computerized screens, NY’s subway cars used rotating fabric scrolls with stations printed on them inside illuminated windows to display the train’s route. In the train we shot in, there were 12 of these sign windows in each train car, and we had 5 cars, so that alone is 60 signs. With the addition of doubles for cars playing twice as different routes and the train-front route signs, we made 163 directional car signs (though we only see 3 of them…). In place of fabric scrolls, the most practical alternative for us was to make the top 2 illuminated sections with black vinyl on milk plexiglass and the unlit bottom with printed vinyl mounted on showcard. Like the Bowery station, these car interiors had a mix of paint jobs, so that helped each car look like its own train. The MTA was able to supply all of the ads that run across the tops of the cars, but all other ad and sign holders had to be covered with new graphics. To figure out what and how much needed to be created, we scouted train cars at the @nytransitmuseum and got to ride on the exact train we’d be using in the Bronx’s rail yard for a dry run (10/10 perk of the job). We unfortunately didn’t realize until the day of that the window backlighting gave off a cooler white than the printed vinyl section. This actually made the vinyl look more illuminated than the backlit plexi… Knowing this would have saved the electric team a lot of work and made all of these graphics cheaper to produce, but it is good to know for the future how bright a warm white can look, especially in a dark and grungy environment. All in all, about 320 signs were produced for the subway stations and cars. #graphicdesignforfilm #graphicdesignforfilmandtv #graphicsforfilm #graphicdesign #graphicdesignforfilms #artdepartment #usa829 #iatse #mrsmaisel #themarvelousmrsmaisel #maisel #vintagesigns #vintagedesign #oldnewyork #vintagenewyork #nysubway

1937 - Macdougal Alley, or mews, were working stables for the gilded age townhouses that lined Washington Square. The Alley is named after a mostly forgotten Revolutionary War hero and they spelled his name wrong, Alexander McDougall. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney had a studio in the last carriage house on the far left.

But I’ll keep saying it, if you love vintage watches, I highly recommend taking a look into this brand, specifically from 1961 to 1965. 1890 - The Vanderbilt’s Triple Palace at 640 & 642 Fifth Avenue. Built in 1882 by Charles Atwood, composed of two portions: a single-family unit to the south and a two-family unit to the north. William Henry Vanderbilt owned and lived in the southern portion. Two of his daughters, Emily Thorn Vanderbilt and Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, along with their respective families, occupied the two residences in the northern portion. These three connected homes just south of Cornelius Vanderbilt’s massive home on 57th St, created ‘Vanderbilt Row’ along Fifth Ave. The homes were demolished in 1945 to make way for an office building as the commercial district rushed northward (see second photo from 1923, with an ominous office building already next door).

1916 & today: Looking west on E 14th St from the east side of 2nd Ave in Gramercy, Manhattan. In spite of all the time that has passed, it’s truly remarkable to see that this intersection has remain largely unchanged. The grand building across the street on the right-hand side is the W.M. Evarts apartment building, which is named after William Maxwell Evarts. In the latter half of the 19th century, Evarts served as the U.S Attorney General, the U.S Secretary of State, & represented New York as a U.S senator. Evarts lived on a brownstone at the site of the current building during the 1850s. The current apartment building was erected in 1910. The IRT Third Avenue Line’s 14th Street elevated station can just be seen in the distance in the 1916 photo. The station, along with the rest of the line south of 149th Street was torn in 1955. 1905 - The Wendel Mansion, at 39th St and Fifth Avenue, NW corner. It was built in 1856. They had one of the most prolific land owning portfolios ever in NYC. In their heyday, the Wendels paid more real estate taxes in New York than anyone, including the Rockefeller’s. The dynasty had more than 150 properties in Manhattan worth over $1 billion in today’s dollars. They’re investment strategy from the days of the first Wendel in the new world John G who came from Germany in 1798: Never mortgage a property; never sell anything; never pay for repairs; and never forget that Broadway moves uptown at a rate of 10 blocks a decade. However they were referred to as the “Weird Wendels”, for even though they had huge landholdings, they spent very little of it. They never spoke to the public, wore cheap, out of style clothing, rarely went out, and their mansion didn’t even have electricity. When Ella, the last Wendel, died in 1931 at 78, the Wendel fortune (estimated at $100M in 1932 dollars!; worth billions today) was to be divided among several charities. But before the estate could be dispersed, an astounding 2,303 people came forward purporting to be relatives. Cousins appeared from as far away as Czechoslovakia, and, according to The New York Herald Tribune of March 23, 1932, entire villages in Germany, “most of whose inhabitants bear the name of Wendel” came out of the woodwork to file claims. In the end, all but a handful were proven bogus and the Wendels’ vast estate was dismantled, with the bulk of the proceeds going to charity. The last parcel, on Union Square where the fashionable Coffee Shop now stands, was sold in 1950. The home was demolished four years later and the Art Deco S. H. Kress & Co. flagship 5-and-10-cent store was built on the site. That structure was demolished in the mid-1980’s to make way for Republic National Bank tower.

Times Square has an exciting and eventful history. This most iconic location in New York City, known for its dazzling lights and lively atmosphere has origins dating back to the 19th century, when it was known as Long Acre Square. It was renamed Times Square in 1904 after the offices of the New York Times were moved there. This period saw the construction of theaters, stores, and other buildings that quickly made Times Square the center of New York City nightlife. In the 1940s, Times Square began to lose its appeal due to crime and prostitution, becoming a dark and dangerous place. However, the neighborhood continued to thrive due to its Broadway theaters and its importance as a center of the entertainment industry. In the 1970s, a series of architectural changes transformed the appearance of Times Square. Historic buildings were demolished to make way for more modern towers, significantly changing the landscape of the square. Since then, the transformation of Times Square into a vibrant commercial and tourist center has continued, with the addition of new stores, restaurants, tourist attractions and most importantly its iconic giant screens.
