Another classic Coney Island Ride, now called the Twist & Shout, I'm pretty sure that at that time it was known as the Voyage to the Moon, which was actually a totally different rude at the original Luna Park at the turn of the 20th century, presumably after Georges Melies's five minute movie of that name, prints which you could watch on viewing machines at places like Coney Island a hundred and twenty years ago. All this ride does is slowly ascend and rotate, giving a fine view of the sea and the boardwalk and the rest of Coney Island. When I took this picture I had only lately transitioned from being a kid who had a great time going on amusement park rides myself to a novice adult who got more of a kick out of seeing kids having a great time on amusement rides, while thinking 'Damn, if that were me, I'd feel so sick.' This classic ride is called the Tilt-a-Whirl and it was already over half a century old when I took this picture, which means that it must be pushing a century now. Makes me think of Plutarch's parable-paradox of The Ship of Theseus...If, on its long voyage every timber of it has gradually been replaced, is it then the same ship? Which is, of course, a metaphor for personal identity. Live!…from New York!…it’s!!…door knobs? Recently came across a collection of Art Deco door knobs from New York City’s Hotel Edison. The Hotel Edison is located at 228 West 47th street in Midtown Manhattan. Constructed during the height of the Art Deco period, we assume many of the original heavy cast brass knobs were replaced sometime after 1990 to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. 30+ years and 2900 miles later, they have made their way through our door! The monograms can be a bit difficult to decipher, but… The rounded sides are the upright of the “H”. The “E” is smaller in the middle. 1956 & today: Looking east on E 80th St from 5th Ave on the Upper East Side, Manhattan. . Smiling as radiant as ever in the old photo is actress Grace Kelly outside her New York apartment building at 988 5th Avenue. Just a few weeks after the photo was taken, Ms. Kelly would leave the silver screen and the States for good when she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in one of the most high-profile royal weddings of the 20th century. . Grace Kelly’s first major film role was in the 1952 western High Noon where she starred alongside Gary Cooper. Next came 1953’s Mogambo with Clark Gable & Ava Gardner. In 1954, aged 25, Kelly won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the film The Country Girl. However, Kelly is perhaps best well-known as the leading lady & favorite of director Alfred Hitchock’s famous blonde muses during his golden era. Under Hitchock’s direction, Grace Kelly would star in Dial M for Murder (1954), Rear Window (1954), & To Catch a Thief (1955). Her surprise engagement & marriage to the Prince of Monaco (whom she met in 1955) left a void in Hitchcock’s films which he struggled to fill in subsequent years. In an alternate universe, we might’ve seen Grace Kelly star in Vertigo, North by Northwest, & maybe even Psycho! . Princess Grace would have three children with Prince Rainier III (including Prince Albert II, the reigning Prince of Monaco) & would be active in various charitable organizations throughout the rest of her life. Tragically, she would lose her life as a result of injuries sustained from a car accident after she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at the wheel on Sep. 13, 1982. The princess would die from her injuries the following night at the age of 52. Back to 1960's in NYC and on W.125st where the famous Apollo theater is: A rare blues album cover from Otis Spann...for my record collector friends out there who are into vinyl and many types of music, this one is for you. This album is from mid 1960's and has a small photo segment of a winged green bus going by on the right side and down the block on the right side, you can notice the sign for "Apollo"...check out the vintage cars and green phone booths...no more booths like that around in 2024 NYC. If you were from Harlem in the 1960s and 1970's, those buses and that street image here is probably familiar before so much has been changed on that same block today. Many movies were made in Harlem and to show the Apollo from this same timeframe and into the 1970's. For a blues artist to want to pose on the street there, maybe he was in town to do a concert at the Apollo and thought it would be cool to represent the area on his album? Very few of New York’s buildings directly link to the city’s early Dutch colonial past. That is not the case for St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery with over 350 years of history. It is the city's oldest site of continued religious worship, having been built atop Peter Stuyvesant’s 1660 family chapel. This long history is even reflected in the current church’s seemingly skewed position that does not line up with the street grid. Originally the area was rural farmland and the church was built on a small lane on the Stuyvesant family estate facing true south. The family eventually sold the original church to the Episcopal Church and #OnThisDay in 1793 the cornerstone of the current St. Mark's was laid. It would take another four years for the main church building to open in 1799 and an additional eight years for the tower to be completed. Throughout the 19th century changes and additions were made leaving us today with a unique building that links old New York to its Dutch origins.
