DANCE PERFORMANCE ANNOUNCEMENT: Arcoiris Cultural JOINS US once again for the OAF! Arcoiris Cultural is a youth dance company and studio offering education in Folklórico and Ballet classes in Greenfield, California for children ages 3-17. Words from the choreographer and director, Pilar Mendoza: "My piece is inspired by the people living on the coast of Veracruz, Mexico. Through this choreography, I wanted to portray the work done by women living on the coast. While the fishermen are in the water working, the women take care of them by bringing them fresh water and food. The women acknowledge that the ocean is a source of life for them and they express their gratitude by returning lost baby turtles to the ocean. More about Raven: My name is Raven Cook, I’ve been a member of Youth Arts Collective since 2015 and I am currently one of their interns. Saturday, May 11th from 1-4 pm at the Monterey Museum of Art. Madeline Mims is a 17-year-old Junior at Robert Louis Stevenson High School in Pebble Beach. Her love of dance was evident early on, even before she began walking. She enrolled in her first dance class at the age of three and has been performing and dancing ever since. She is currently serving her third year as Dance Captain of the Stevenson School Varsity Dance Team. Artist Statement: "The piece Wavelength embodies the numerous challenges encountered by animals with the sea, specifically plastic, and the constant avoidance of dangerous obstacles. Kenzie is a Stevenson School Sophomore, a Varsity Dance Team member, and a high jumper on the school track team. She lives in Pacific Grove and loves traveling with her family. Kenzie plans to study dance in college and earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with the goal of incorporating dance into her career. Artist Statement: The dance I choreographed to the song Blue Sky Mind by Trevor Hall reminds me of the inspiration, happiness and sense of peace that comes over me when I am near the ocean. The ocean can be unpredictable at times, but the rhythmic motion of the waves brings me to a place of calm and allows me to feel free. My blue sky “state of mind” comes over me as I sit on the shore watching the sunset or paddle out on my surfboard, my worries disappear and I am immediately inspired. Inspiration for this work: Diffraction in physics is defined as the spreading of waves as through or around objects. I wanted to use this as a metaphor of how we see our oceans; especially the one that we call home. While growing up near the ocean may mean we have a better sense of gratitude for it, it has also shown that the oceans are something we take for granted. Our gratitude diffracts away as we get older and get caught up with more materialistic things. Introducing Ocean Arts Festival sculpture artist Charlie Hiltunen! Last year, Charlie was honored to be the youngest participant at the Monterey Ocean Arts Festival at the age of 7, and this year returns with themed creatures from the movies “Finding Nemo" and "Finding Dory.” The characters are from some of his favorite scenes in the movies, such as Nemo in his anemone home, Marlin and Dory being chased by the angry anglerfish, and sculptures of characters including Gill and Peach. These movies have taught Charlie about different ocean habitats, such as coral reefs and kelp forests, and emphasize the importance of aquariums and zoo programs that promote rescue, rehabilitation, and release. More about Charlie: At the age of 5, Charlie Hiltunen began sculpting animal creatures using play-doh, strictly by hand and memory.
