Quiet, cloudy Saturday morning leaving LA. 😌 It was a nice break from the usual weekday hustle and bustle on the freeways as we headed south, out of the city to Long Beach, in record time. Started the morning leisurely walking around the South Coast Botanic Gardens. The weather was just perfect and the flowers around the gardens were popping bright shades of pink, orange, yellow, purple, red, you name it. Next, we ventured to a new-to-us boba tea place in Garden Grove, Black Pearl, to try their boba drink flight! What a fun way to try different bobas and milk teas. We tried the regular boba, peach mango, creme brulee, and ube. And of course, we had to get the ube bites for a fun treat. We quickly looked around in H-Mart while we there...cool products to explore (for my AZ peeps, there's a location in Mesa)! The Orange County Museum of Art was our next stop as we continued south. Fun little museum to enjoy some artwork...and it was free! While in the area, we HAD to visit one of our favorite donut shops, Oliboli. If you're ever in the area, this place is a must! You've never had such a light and airy donuts like Oliboli makes. 😊 Finished the day out with a nice seafood dinner right by the coast. It’s the last weekend for these lovelies: Bosc Pear Cake, Hazelnut Pear, and Chocolate Chip Cookie. As always, I am glad I never miss a new flavor from @olibolidonuts — I didn’t not think I would enjoy the chocolate chip cookie as much as I did and wow was I wrong. The cookie is a classic chocolate chip cookie that is tender and soft with sweet chocolate chips. The dulcey whipped cream lends for a caramel-y toffee-ish vibe without taking away from the highlight taste of a chocolate chip cookie. — As for both pear donuts, they are yum-o. While I prefer a leavened donut over a cake donut, I was head over heals for the Bosc Pear Cake donut. The poached pears were plump and concentrated in flavor and their honey-like sweetness was intensified with the salty pear caramel.

Jess and I used to come to @olibolidonuts every Monday for close to a whole year. Not only do we enjoy the 40 hour leavened donuts, real-flavored glazes, and homemade toppings, but we became great friends with the family behind all the delicious magic. — As time changes we probably get to visit once a month now, but every visit gives us the same good feeling and we walk out with a pretty solid tone to set our day thanks to the staff (and the donuts 😉). — The leavened donuts are quite spectacular and unlike any other leavened donut I've tried to date and same goes for their cake donuts. Tenderized and made with kefir and stone-milled white sonora wheat, they fry up crisp yet sofr, and are noticeably less oily than the pink box shops.

Cape Cod ♥️ Olivia geht es sehr gut. Wir haben jetzt eine Woche frei und genießen die Zeit mit meinen Eltern auf Cape Cod. Endlich mal abschalten und ein bisschen runter kommen. Die letzten Wochen waren wirklich anstrengend und eine emotionale Berg und Talfahrt. Die kleine Maus macht sich wirklich prima, sie trinkt wie ein Profi aus ihrer Flasche (was vor dem Eingriff kaum mehr möglich war). Auch ihre Kopfkontrolle ist viel besser und wir glauben fest daran, dass mit viel Übung und Geduld noch weitere Fortschritte möglich sind! Grad sind wir einfach nur froh, dass es ihr so gut geht und sie keine weiteren Rückschritte gemacht hat. Alles andere wird die Zeit bringen! Wir vermissen Deutschland und unsere Familie und Freunde sehr. 💚Olivia Update💚 Die Maus hat ihre beiden Eingriffe gut überstanden. Es waren sehr harte Tage für uns, ein stündliches auf und ab. Angst, Nervosität und als wir sie am Mittwoch nach 10h endlich wieder sehen durften eine ganze Menge Freudentränen. Wir können es immer noch nicht fassen, dass sie die Therapie erhalten hat und eine Chance auf Leben bekommt!! Wir sind mittlerweile wieder in unserem Appartement und Olivia geht es jeden Tag besser. Sie ist schon noch etwas weinerlich aber kann auch schon wieder lachen 😍 jetzt müssen wir einfach geduldig abwarten was die Zeit bringt und wie es sich entwickelt. Wir glauben fest, dass die Krankheit gestoppt wird und wir noch viele glückliche Jahre zusammen haben. Ob sie wieder Fortschritte macht und wie diese aussehen weiß bisher keiner, aber es wäre schon reinste Magie wenn sie keine weiteren Rückschritte mehr macht. Sie ist so unglaublich tapfer, wir sind wahnsinnig stolz so eine wundervolle und starke Tochter zu haben. Olivia wir lieben dich über alles ♥️ die nächsten Wochen stehen einige Nachuntersuchungen an, Medikamente müssen eingestellt werden und einige Termine bei der Physiotherapie werden sie hoffentlich unterstützen wieder etwas Muskulatur aufzubauen. Die Voruntersuchungen sind alle abgeschlossen - jetzt heißt es nur noch warten auf den großen Tag. Wir werden die Zeit bis zum Eingriff nur “zuhause” verbringen, da Olivias Immunsystem ja heruntergefahren ist und sie sich jetzt auf keinen Fall was einfangen darf. Aber das Wetter am Wochenende wird gut, dann können wir zumindest etwas raus. Am Dienstag hatten wir Untersuchungs-Frei und haben einen Ausflug in ein Reservoir gemacht. Beautiful Boston ♥️ die letzten Tage waren wieder voll mit Untersuchungen. Heute wurde ihr eine PICC line gelegt, ein weiteres MRT gemacht, CT und eine Augenuntersuchung. Wir sind jetzt für die nächsten Tage stationär in der Klinik, da sie ab morgen die Medikamente zur Unterdrückung ihres Immunsystems bekommt, die notwendig sind, damit die Therapie anschlagen kann. Gestern standen MRT und Nervenwasserentnahme auf dem Programm. Hierzu wurde Olivia sediert, da man beim MRT und Lumbalpunktion ja ruhig bleiben muss. Die Schwestern und Ärzte waren so unglaublich nett und haben uns durchgehend betreut, Olivias Krankenschwester ist ihr nicht von der Seite gewichen. Wir durften ihr noch einen letzten Kuss im MRT Raum geben und mussten unsere Maus dann für die nächsten 2.5 h alleine lassen. Das war schon ziemlich hart. Aber sie hat wie immer alles super gemeistert, sie ist einfach so unglaublich stark. Auch die Schwester war voll und ganz zufrieden! Mit einer Packung Lollis für Olivia durften wir dann gegen halb 5 wieder nach Hause. Ein anstrengender erster Tag geht zu Ende. Olivia hat alle Untersuchungen super gemeistert und alle waren sofort verliebt in die kleine Maus 😍 das Ärzteteam ist unglaublich nett und kompetent, wir fühlen uns sehr gut aufgehoben. Sie sind sehr zufrieden mit ihr und positiv überrascht von ihrer aktuellen Verfassung. Dass sie noch sehr viel lautiert und noch gut reagiert ist wohl bei Kindern mit Tay Sachs in diesem Alter eher selten und eine gute Voraussetzung, dass durch die Therapie diese Fähigkeiten wieder verbessert werden könnten. I am often asked, “What is your favorite item to order at @olibolidonuts?” My answer? A cardamom bun, available only on Mondays. — Because it is twisted and fried a bit longer, or so it seems, the resulting textures is a crust that is crisp and shattery with an interior that is utterly soft, yet gives a bit of chew akin to a pull-apart brioche crossed with milk bread. — It is buttery, surprisingly not all that sweet despite being tossed in sugar, and so earthy from cardamom. The use of cardamom is graceful and does not come off too strong. It’s just enough to welcome you in with open arms and keep you gently warm.
