Meet Vaarey 🌧️ On the 14th of April sea turtle biologist Sarah, based in Noonu atoll, called our veterinary team for assistance with a turtle rescue. 🛟 Her and the staff at @soneva Jani had found an entangled male olive ridley on their way back from a snorkelling excursion. The resort quickly built him a custom-made box for safe transport and transferred the patient by speedboat to our Rescue Centre in Baa atoll on the same day! 🙌🏾 Vaarey arrived on a rainy day, hence his name, which means "rain" in Dhivehi. He is an adult male who suffered from a ligature injury to his neck from a plastic mesh bag and had also ingested net material. 🤕 Following a comprehensive health assessment, it was determined that Vaarey was suffering from anaemia and a gastrointestinal condition to which he is undergoing treatment. We are very happy to say Vaarey is now free from the almost 1.5m long line he had ingested! 💪🏾 Given how critical his condition is the veterinary team continues to keep a close monitoring and regular checks. Happy #EarthDay 💚🌍 . . . Today I thought I’d share my photos of sea turtles 🐢 that I took in January, on the way to Mexico. We had mirror calm conditions 🌊 (literally a sea state 0) in the Pacific, which meant a perfect day for data collection. It didn’t take long before we started spotting wildlife; from nazca and brown boobies, flying fish and spinner dolphins, to sharks, sea lions and of course, sea turtles! There must have been over 500 turtles at least, just chilling near the surface, floating about their day. Some were attached to each other, creating little flotillas or bales, while others had cheeky avian hitchhikers cruising along, atop their shells. Many species migrate over 10,000 miles per year between breeding and foraging sites. We saw lots of olive ridley and green turtles, and even a few loggerheads! We have sad news to share from the rescue centre…Unfortunately this last week we lost Raalhu 😔 She continued to deteriorate quickly and despite our efforts she did not survive her injuries. Upon her passing we were able to perform a post-mortem and discovered she had ingested another 3 fishing lines which severely damaged her intestines by causing them to fold on themselves and restrict blood flow, ultimately leading to tissue death. Raalhu is a tragic but important reminder to the dangers sea turtles face from human waste and the importance of responsible disposal to safeguard our oceans. This 5-year partnership is a key milestone for both organisations, as it formalizes data sharing and collaborations across the years. Yesterday, we had the privilege of visiting Playa Escobilla Sanctuary, a vital haven for sea turtles, nestled along the Pacific Coast about 40km south of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. This sanctuary is not just a beach; it’s a lifeline for four endangered species of sea turtles, including the awe-inspiring Olive Ridley. Each year, these magnificent creatures choose Playa Escobilla as their nesting ground in a spectacular natural event known as an arribada, where thousands of turtles arrive en masse to lay their eggs. Playa Escobilla is globally recognized as one of the most crucial nesting sites for sea turtles. The dedicated efforts here focus on protecting these gentle giants during their most vulnerable times: nesting, hatching, and the perilous journey of newborns to the sea. As we helped the conservation teams and took part in the magical moment when tiny hatchlings make their first journey, we learned the importance of coexisting with and preserving our natural world. This experience has deeply moved us, reminding us of our responsibility to protect these ancient mariners and the environments they depend on. Every year between December to May thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles (females) return to the coastline of India from where they had left once 15-20 years ago. Science may not know how, but the turtles know exactly which beach they were born on, when and how they will return to lay their eggs to the same beach where they had once taken their baby steps into the sea. Did you know, the Anjarle International Turtle festival is an effort by the locals to conserve these endangered species. The project involves in preserving the Olive Ridley sea turtle population by collecting their eggs along the coast and after 45-60 days successfully releasing the hatchlings into the sea in a phased manner. Anjarle, in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra is about 200 -230 km from Pune & Mumbai. It is famous for its beaches, alphonso mangoes and turtle ‘festival’ which is held by the local people of Anjarle. Thousands of people from across the country plan a visit during this period to witness this rare sight which happens once a year. It also makes for a photographers delight to capture these moments. Meet Mushi 👋 Our newest patient here at Atoll Marine Conservation Centre. Mushi meaning "Brown" in Dhivehi, is a small sub adult olive ridley sea turtle (weighing only 15kg) who was admitted to our centre on the 13th April 2024. As you may have seen from our recent Reel showing her admission journey, she was found by @velaaprivateisland in Noonu Atoll. She was found floating towards an abandoned resort called Maavelaa varu, entangled in plastic. Unfortunately, her left front flipper has a really deep entanglement wound. Part of a plastic cement bag was embedded deeply in her tissues (Photo 2) ➡️, causing blood circulation problems in that flipper. Despite her severe injury, we have noticed she is occasionally using that flipper from time to time, which gives us hope to be able to save the flipper. Our vet is currently monitoring her closely to determine the best course of action moving forward. Initial blood work revealed Mushi has mild anemia and signs of bacterial infection. An X-ray also revealed her humerus is not broken (the wound is around the humerus), and there is no visible foreign body in her gastrointestinal tract. (Photo 5) ➡️ After being cleared to be strong enough to be put in water, her in water exam revealed she is able to dive, has been observed resting on the bottom and has no buoyancy problems. She is under close supervision, receiving antibiotics. Painkillers and regular wound debridement. Thank you again to @velaaprivateisland for calling us about the entanglement and for bringing her to our centre for rehabilitation. Patient update: Kurangi 🐦⬛ Kurangi continues to be hyper motivated during her dive training sessions, easily achieving each new challenge the team sets her. Today we are very proud to share she is now able to dive all the way to the bottom of her tank!! 👏🏾 Kurangi is now eating from the bottom of her enclosure and even managing to stay submerged horizontally for longer periods of time!
