On the bench: an @ehx Big Muff which had seen better days. After a good clean and swapping one of the power capacitors this old UNIT was back in working order! While I was there I swapped the 3.5mm mini plug socket to the standard barrel connector (which I forgot to take a photo of 🤦♂️) What is there to say that hasn’t been already said about the Big Muff? One of my favourite watchmaking jobs is finishing our hour and minute hands. These are made from 18ct gold and for our in-house Project 248 watches. I think it’s because they’re all like little individual pieces of fine jewellery or teeny tiny golden sculptures formed be hand ⚜️ For anyone interested in trying the processes we use, I use diamond files to shape the flat blank hand and create these lovely curves. To finish it I use a combination of papers (fine wet and dry then micron) and micromesh cloths cut into thin strips. To polish I use typical gold finishing compounds. To stress, there are many more methods, this is just the one I like to use at the moment. This has been a multi year project that is finally coming to fruition! Really makes all the work to this point worth it getting closer to the final version. These are my new midrange baffle adapter plates to replace all of the midranges of my Infinity QLS-1 speakers. Yes the originals can be repaired, but they remain fragile with the external wiring, not to mention the decades of age that has changed the doping used on the fabric domes. These new midrange drivers are lighter membranes to be quicker, matching better to the speed and delivery of the thin diaphragms of the EMIT drivers and updated midbass coupler. These baffles are more dense than the originals being less prone to resonance and I am hoping that the textured finish will help with edge diffraction issues. This and time alignment will need to be measured and considered while adjusting the crossover.
