🔸 The Crucifixion ☦️🔸 The day of Christ’s death is the day that sin, which polluted God’s creation from the breaking dawn of time, reached its frightful climax. Ungodly men had Jesus Christ nailed to the Cross, in order to destroy Him. The death of Christ is the final and ultimate revelation of His perfect obedience and love. He suffered for us the excruciating pain of absolute betrayal and alienation - “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me!” (Mark 15:34). The profound event of the death and burial of God in the flesh is marked by mourning, but ultimately this event becomes the indispensable doorway of our passage from death to life, rather than from life to death. In the icon we see the Crucified Christ with a most peaceful countenance, having fulfilled His work of redemption. Blood and water streams from the right side of His body where He was pierced by the Lance of the Roman centurion Longinus (on the far right). Tradition holds that Longinus received healing from an eye affliction when blood and water poured forth from the wound of Christ. The events of Christ’s death shook the centurion’s soul, and Saint Longinus came to believe in Christ confessing before everyone; “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54). At the foot of the Cross to the right is the beloved and youthful disciple Saint John the Theologian. 🔸 The Suffering of Christ 🔸 On Holy Friday, we commemorate the suffering of our Lord: the mockery, the road to Golgotha, the crown of thorns, the scourging, the nails, the thirst, the cry of desolation, and all that the Savior endured on the Cross. This is a day of mourning for all Orthodox Christians. The first icon shows Christ carrying His Cross on the Way to Golgotha (from Latin ‘skull’). This skull-shaped hill in ancient Jerusalem was where Christ was Crucified. The man assisting Christ carry His heavy cross is Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled to do so by the Roman guards (Mark 15:21). It is important to recognize that despite physically helping Christ bear the Life-giving Cross, Simon of Cyrene is not commemorated as a Saint by the Church as he did not do this voluntarily but was forced to. In the second icon, we see Jesus Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns. This was placed on His head in the lead up to His crucifixion by the Roman soldiers who mockingly hailed Him “King of the Jews” (Matthew 27:29). The third icon shows the Scourging of Christ at the Pillar. Having sentenced Jesus Christ to death, the Roman governor Pontius Pilate then ordered for Him to be flogged (John 19:1). 3 мая — день памяти свт. Никола́я (Велимировича), епископа Охридского и Жичского! Житие: Святитель Николай, богоносный отец наших дней, родился в день памяти святителя Наума Охридского в 1880 году. Его родители, крестьяне-фермеры, всегда прекращали работу для ежедневной молитвы и соблюдали церковный постовой и богослужебный круг. С младенчества вскормленный этим небесным хлебом, святитель Николай впоследствии стал «новым Златоустом», известным и любимым повсюду в православном мире за свои проповеди, наставления и писания. Он стал монахом, затем иеромонахом и впоследствии епископом Жичским в возрасте 39 лет. Во время Второй мировой войны принял страдания в концлагере в Дахау. После войны спас многие покинутые сербские монастыри от разрушения, посылая туда монахинь вместо замученных, заключенных или призванных на военную службу иноков. Он подвизался как архиерей и духовный наставник в Америке и скончался в Свято-Тихоновском монастыре в Южном Кэнане, штат Пенсильвания.
