Looking back over images on my phone from the Met's Africa and Byzantium exhibit, two terracotta images caught my eye. Both are from Tunisia and although they are over a thousand years old, their saturated brick-orange color could make you believe they were fired yesterday. The first is a jug from the 3rd century, probably depicting a young man. I love his bright, wide eyes and almost-smile. I love how his small face peeks out from a riot of stylized hair, and the ridged texture of his fat curls. They look like caterpillars. The other one is a chunky, hand-sized, 6th-century oil lamp full of soft curves and crisp, flower-like stamped motifs. In the center, a robed and haloed Jesus holding (?) a cross crushes a serpent's head with his foot, in what feels like a macho gesture. I love the way the incised stripes on the bottom half of his garment lean to the left. Also, although he faces forward, his feet are shown in profile, facing right. I can't get over the spindly but unmistakeable three-legged menorah attached to the image of Jesus. The Met refers to this as a "rich intermingling of religions and cultures." The face of Panagia is the incorruptible face of the eternal mother, whose embrace is wider than the sky itself. How can one depict this unique face with its reserved sorrow? Her characteristics in traditional painting are simple and yet, those great painters managed to create, with the elementary artistic means, all the tragic majesty of the Mother who mourns with unspeakable pain the loss of Her Child. On the other hand, I simply drew a face of a grieving woman. She is not Panagia, but a simple woman like all of us. GR2024-40: Mystras. Im 13. Jh. gegründet, wurde diese Stadt schnell zu einem bedeutenden mittelalterlichen Zentrum mit Festung, Palästen, Kirchen, Klöstern etc. Erst unter der türkischen Herrschaft verlor sie ihre Bedeutung, die letzten Bewohner zogen aus, als Sparta neu begründet wurde. Mystra ist noch viel größer als Monemvasia, eine fast komplette mittelalterliche Stadt. Vor allem die Kirchen sind trotz der Zeit und einiger Erdbeben erstaunlich gut erhalten. Die letzten beiden Bilder zeigen das Pantanassa-Kloster, das bis heute von Nonnen bewohnt wird. Für uns war der Besuch der erste Regentag in Griechenland - gottseidank konnten wir die Regenfront aussitzen, sonst wäre es auf den alten Steinwegen doch unangenehm geworden. Eastern Roman cavalry of the 8th and 9th centuries AD. To our left we see a Kataphraktos of the regiment of Excubitores from the early 8th century AD, a member of the Imperial Guard. He wears a composite helmet with nasal protection and feathers decoration. He wears a cuirass (sidherotoraka) with golden ornaments (the head of a lion), green pteruges and carries a highly ornamented saber (machaira). In the center we have a Bulgarian boyar from the early 8th century AD. He wears a full chain mail, a laminated helmet and laminated greaves (podopsella). To our right we have an Ippeus (cataphract rider) from the Hikanatoi regiment (elite heavy cavalry specialized in hand-to-hand combat and made up of the sons of the dignitaries of Constantinople aged 15 years and above) from the year 801 AD. He has elements from the Roman tradition (pteruges), golden chainmail and novelties imported from the Khazar Empire, such as shoulder pads, wristbands (cheiropsella) and greaves (podopsella). Forse ci sembra audace dire questo, e allora domandiamoci: in che senso Gesù ha bisogno di noi? Egli ha bisogno della nostra testimonianza. Il frutto che, come tralci, dobbiamo dare è la testimonianza della nostra vita cristiana. Dopo che Gesù è salito al Padre, è compito dei discepoli – è compito nostro – continuare ad annunciare il Vangelo, con la parola e con le opere. E i discepoli – noi, discepoli di Gesù – lo fanno testimoniando il suo amore: il frutto da portare è l’amore. Attaccati a Cristo, riceviamo i doni dello Spirito Santo, e così possiamo fare del bene al prossimo, fare del bene alla società, alla Chiesa. Dai frutti si riconosce l’albero. Una vita veramente cristiana dà testimonianza a Cristo. Well finally I done this icon of the Theothokos of Passion( Our lady of Perpetual Help in the western Christendom) it’s took me a month the finished this amazing 🥲 byzantine art. 💾 This unique icon contains the oldest surviving depiction of the story of the holy Mandylion. Roughly speaking, the story goes that Abgar, king of Edessa (portrayed on the top right) was ill and asked Jesus to come and cure him, but Jesus couldn't go so he sent a piece of cloth that his face was imprinted upon (hence "Acheiropoietos": Image not made by hand) -the Mandylion. This story is not mentioned in the New Testament but is rather a legend developed through the centuries. 👑🖌️ It has been suggested that the model for the depiction of the face of Abgar was the emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos, who has been associated with the veneration of the holy Mandylion, spread to Byzantium after that supposedly arrived in Constantinople in 944. 🕵️♀️ Whatever this Mandylion was, it does not survive today. Some records suggest that it was stolen during the Sack of 1204 and finally disappeared during the French Revolution. 💥 Bonus fact: There is another similar object, the famous "Shroud of Turin", in which Jesus’ dead body was supposed to be wrapped in the tomb, but it has been proven to be a 13th-14th century forgery. I'm doing some more experimenting on this piece. I also started another one of the same image but done differently. It's very good to work on two images simultaneously. It helps us to see it more fully. Understand the image that we are working on. Also gives us freedom to try different things. In consequence this makes us feel more relaxed and confident. And that's always a crucial factor.
