Deepest gratitude to Vasa Fia, Kaperiela and Aselemo Collins for permission to share it - Vinaka vakalevu. Made in the week following the sudden and tragic death of local leader, FaâanÄnÄ Efeso Collins (1974-2024), Czarina Wilson and I were inspired to make this work to process the shock and sadness, and for me, the deep loss of a friend and colleague. In the days following the announcement of FaâanÄnÄâs death, we cut almost 2000 squares of fabric assembling a total of 968 double-sided puffed squares, each with four individual pleats. This labour of love was made over five days and nights in between East TÄmaki, Åtara, Papatoetoe and @celebrate_aotearoa in Glen Innes. On Saturday, it was beautiful and heartbreaking to see the connections and sadness and power of Efeso manifest in the gallery. Powerful to have Czarina meet Efesoâs beloved family for the first time, and for those who supported us and fed us in the process of making this monomono share again what it was to feel the shock and awe of that week, still on a high from his incredible Maiden Speech in Parliament. I was sifting through my box of linocuts last week & came across this plate that Iâd carved 6 years ago as part of my âNostalgicâ series. Iâd forgotten all about it so Iâve had alot of fun printing these again. âSniftersâ was one of my favourite lollies (or candy) growing up in New Zealand. They were oval shaped lollies with peppermint nougat inside, surrounded by chocolate & encased in a candy shell (aarrgh they were so good!) They were always a familiar treat at the movies & the floors would be littered with the distinctive green & red boxes (littered by others, not me I swear). Last weekend to view Geoffery Matautiaâs (@southsides) portraits on the Te Tuhi billboards in Pakuranga and Parnellâ The three works featured on the billboards belong to an ongoing photographic portrait series titled âCommunity Service: Family Portraitsâ. Matautia started to work on it in 2023, during a three-month research project sponsored by the Te Tuhi artist development programme PapatÅ«nga. To answer the question âWhat does service look like as a Pacific artist within your community?â, Matautia reached out to his community on social media, offering free family photographs taken outside of their homes. The resulting photos capture unique family moments and become a heirloom that can be passed down to future generations. Follow the link in bio for more information on the exhibition and the artist. Luke Willis Thompsonâs new work, âMouvement des Maladesâ is on until 18 May at the East Street Church in central Auckland, which I had always thought was an EFKS church. The site was built in 1909 and is a powerful space and environment to consider Thompsonâs latest project which was made in/about the famous Church of the Black Christ, Church of St Francis Xavier, Ra Province in northern Viti Levu, Fiji. I loved feeling held by the surround sound of this work, because the almost oppressive din of heavy rain on a tin roof, and the screech of mynah birds, and the non-existent barrier between inside and outside worlds, feels like home. Distinctly, it takes me back to slightly damp sheets, tilted louvres, the rain on leaves, concrete, gravel, earth, the smell of wet⊠everything. And shelter. I loved having this experience of this work in central Auckland, and the familiarity of home. Thank you @lukewillisthompson ððœ Iâm so looking forward to spending more time in this space, sitting in my nostalgia ð and thinking about the era of the early 1960s when French artist Jean Charlot depicted this mashed up fantasy scene of Christian cosplay. Exciting to see new work by LWT! ð ð Many of you came to the opening of our new exhibition "Wealth & Adornmentâ to discover the exquisite midi neck piece from the Tolai people of the Gazelle Peninsula, New Britain, Bismarck Archipelago, PNG, Melanesia! Crafted in the 19th/20th century, this stunning piece features Nassa shells, rattan, bush string, vegetable fiber, and trade-cloth, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. This rare find was subsequently acquired by a Dutch collector before arriving in our collection. Midi collars like this one were symbols of wealth and prestige, worn on ceremonial occasions and reportedly in combat. Made of cord-wrapped rattan rings adorned with thousands of overlapping Nassa shells, they served as powerful charms offering magical protection to the wearer. Shell money, known as tabu or tambu, was a form of currency among the Tolai people, representing wealth and status. These rings were stored in special houses and played a significant role in the local economy. Despite their historical significance, midi collars and shell money rings were no longer made by the late 20th century.
