2024 has been very eventful. But 2024 also marks 15 years since I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I came to my nephew Duc Nhat the amazing photographer behind this shoot with a concept to showcase the highs & lows of bipolarity, of living with extreme rise & falls of emotions. After 15 years of living with a mental illness, you learn that it’s both an absolute curse and an incredible gift. Nobody wants to ever experience a manic episode where you have lost all sense of reality, did some crazy crazy stuff and woke up surrounded by doctors and nurses in a mental hospital. I was actually picked up by the police in 2 different countries and sent to a mental hospital. There’s no fun in that. It’s a traumatic, harrowing & terrifying experience. The gifts though, are incredible creativity, social charms, unmatched productivity and a photographic memory. When combined, they feel like superpowers at times. After 15 years, I’m only thankful to God for allowing me to use my story to encourage many others suffering any form of mental illness to speak up, seek treatment, seek help, and feel that they are definitely not alone. Our societies still have so much prejudices against the mentally ill, even after 2 years of covid where literally everybody has felt some form of depression, loneliness and isolation. I just want to say through these images that there’s beauty in the aloneness, the craziness and even the depression. They are simply parts of being human. Another one of my ghost couch ladies. I have to admit, I can't see an example of a "reclining women on a sofa" portrait anymore without already covering it in my head. What’s tempting about these portraits is that the clothing is informal in some way. That means flowing fabrics, less courtly posture, everything is a bit more private. This does not mean that these portraits were not a means of presentation. On the contrary, the sitter's position was so good, that the - very expensive - medium of expression of a painted portrait was not used for something formal, but they could afford to show themself in a private setting (maybe you even show your hobby, like playing the guitar). And it is obviously not Woolworth polyester nightgowns that we see, we see the most delicate and precious fabrics, always in opulent quantities. One was simply in the fortunate position of being able to recover from the stresses and strains of afternoon tea and still look fabulous. Additionally they were able to show the beautiful interiors with velvet cushions and such. And eventually you end up in the collection yalebritishart Hidden Kettle II, Photocollage 2023 . . Hidden Portraits are interventions via Photoshop in photos of historical portrait paintings. They are digital works. I cover the faces in different ways, but I do not add anything from the outside to the paintings. I only reshape individual elements of the painting itself, taking into account the special characteristics of the painting. The Hidden Portraits are a contemporary view of art history, of paintings as part of representation. Deze week liep lieve @livverbaarschott een paar dagen mee met mij voor een snuffelstage. Ze mocht mee naar een gezinsshoot en een newborn shoot, fotografeerde zijdelings mee én ik trok haar ook even voor m’n camera. Want ze is echt veeeeel te fotogeniek om alleen áchter de camera te staan, maar dat spreekt voor zich. Every photosession is so different! I am excited about going to places I barely know or those I am somewhat familiar with but never thought of them as a photo location. Well, I wouldn't have thought even half a year ago that I will decide to grab my camera with an intention to take photos of people again, let alone exploring city parks for good spots for photos. I am impressed that even in places that are small or look ordinary, especially when the days are as dull as a regular Finnish spring is, it is still possible to find these groovy corners or those charming trees or these peculiar angles. I am thrilled about pushing the boundaries of my creative outlook - and maybe I am finally ready to approach photography with more care and less of 'on a whim' attitude. I attended one course several years ago, and I must admit that technical aspects of photography were a real killjoy for me back then. Like, 'I cannot just shoot everything i see? What do you mean it won't be beautiful by default? I see it as beautiful, why can't others?' Now, however, I am seeing the joy in finding the right composition, light, positioning; maybe it is just that the time was not right back then, but is it now? The time is right when we make it right, I guess. Dark/Light. I have been taking photos for many years, for fun and pleasure. When I was in high school, I had this one very handsome friend who was the main target of my viewfinder. But I also took photos of happenings, of events, summer camps, whatnot, documenting everything happening around me and often pissing others off with my camera. Somehow, I never thought back then that one could study photography in higher education and anyway was strongly advised to choose a profession that would bring money (ahem). Fast forward almost twenty years (holy cow!) and I am coming back to my big joy (and trying to still spare some time in my life for my other big joys, hehe...) I must say, am slowly but surely falling in love with taking individual portraits. It is about mutual discovery. It is about connection with the person on the other side of the camera without many distractions. It is about trust. So I guess I am at the stage of exploring now. Exploring the locations I know well enough, through the camera lens, with beautiful humans in those locations, trying to fit it all into one frame and a context that would make at least some sense. Also exploring the settings of my camera to be able to capture those beautiful humans in a way that would reflect their beauty. And swearing quite a lot along the way because I have forgotten all I knew about photographing humans and, where is my composition, where is my focus, how the hell do I keep this and that and also that the way i want it to be for this shot, and then on the big screen it still doesn't look as good as I would have hoped for, but hey, out of a hundred pics i suddenly have a handful of decent ones, that's a good start, right? Step after step after step. Most important, though, is that, overwhelmed as I may be, I am enjoying every single moment of the process.
