It’s been nearly 3 months since my last post on here, so I thought I’d share something a wee bit special 💙 The 2007/08 season was the most memorable campaign in #QueenOfTheSouthFC’s 104-year history! Here we have a #matchworn Home shirt from that famous season, manufactured by Surridge Sport; a sportswear company more synonymous with Cricket than Football 🏏 The shirt is mainly blue with oversized white side panels and yellow trim. It features a pair of phenomenal sleeve patches from #Scotland’s favourite carbonated soft drink, #IrnBru, the league’s sponsor. During the season, Queens qualified for their first #ScottishCup semi-final in 58 years after a 2–0 quarter-final home victory over #DundeeFC at #PalmerstonPark in #Dumfries. The #Doonhamers went on to defeat #AberdeenFC 4-3 in a dramatic semi-final at #HampdenPark, securing a spot in the final for the first time in their history! 🏴 🏆 The final was contested against #Rangers on the 24th of May, 2008. Despite a battling second half performance to pull back the two goal half-time deficit to 2–2, it was eventually heartbreak for the underdogs as Queens narrowly lost 3–2 in a Scottish Cup classic. The #Queens players were issued with special one-off shirts for both the semi-final and final of the Scottish Cup. The shirt pictured would have been used frequently in the Scottish First Division - where Queens finished 4th - as well as other competitions together with the Scottish Cup up to and including the quarter-final stage. Yesterday was a historic day for Queen of the South FC as they took on Cove Rangers for the first time in Scottish football league competition, with the Doonhamers emerging 2-1 victors in Cove Bay, near Aberdeen. The Dumfries side have now won 3 games on the bounce, as they look to push on with their efforts to gain promotion back to the Scottish Championship. Hopefully Queens can continue this run of form against Montrose next Saturday! Here is the classic 1997-1998 Queen of the South away kit featuring the iconic anti-drugs message. I can’t remember seeing anything as bad since the Blessed Walter was in charge of Everton. The only time the game threatened to come to life was for about five minutes on the hour when the Queens striker rounded the keeper but the ball was cleared before it crossed the line. From the resulting corner a goalmouth scramble ensued before the Airdrie keeper managed to get hold of the ball. Then from the keepers’ clearance Airdire broke quickly and their striker ran through on goal but shot tamely and the chance was gone. The only other incident of note came 5 minutes from the end when the Airdrie striker went through one-on-one before being hauled down by the Queens centre-half, which left the referee no choice but to red card him. Queens Park is the oldest club in Scotland having formed in 1867 and are actually the 10th OLDEST club in the WORLD. I’ve followed Queen of the South from afar after watching a Friday night game on TV in December 2014 when they beat Rangers 2-0 in a league game and they scored two great goals. I did think about sorting an away day to go to Palmerston Park to take in a QOS game but getting there and back in a day by train was quite difficult, but maybe one for the future. At the time, this division represented the second tier of the #scottishfootball league system, before it was renamed the #scottishchampionship in 2013. Queen of the South scored with the first shot on goal of the game after eight minutes. Harry Cochrane’s effort from outside the box took a deflection and Liam Campbell in the Kelty Hearts goal couldn’t keep it out. The visitors responded and Alfie Agyeman got round the back of the Doonhamers defence but couldn’t beat keeper Gordon Botterill. After a bit of a lull, Queens got a second. A good move ended with Ruari Paton finishing with ease past Campbell but the deficit was soon halved when a defensive mistake allowed Agyeman to bear down on goal and drill a powerful right-footed shot into the bottom left corner. Botterill then prevented Joe Cardle getting an equaliser for Kelty and with the last action of the first half, Queens’ Paul McKay headed a corner over. After the break, Ross Irving of QoS had an acrobatic effort deflected wide before teammate Connor Murray had a good opportunity to score but he lobbed the crossbar as well as the keeper. Murray did get a goal on 65 minutes when the ball was put on a plate for him to tap in from a couple of yards out. The Dumfries side were playing some really good stuff and minutes later, a penalty was awarded when a shot hit the arm of a Hearts player. Paton sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot and they nearly got a fifth but McKay couldn’t force the ball home from close range. Kelty threatened a bit again in the final quarter of an hour but they couldn’t manage another goal to finish a respectable first season at League One level after a meteoric rise up the Scottish football pyramid. On 15th August 2011 an Argentine striker by the name of Sergio Agüero made his #premierleague debut for #mancity against #swanseacity 🇦🇷 #Aguero was a second half substitute, but that didn’t stop him scoring twice as Manchester City hammered the Premier League new boys 4-0 ⚽️ Also making his PL debut at the #etihadstadium for the #swans on that day was Scottish striker Stephen Dobbie 🦢 The nature of their journeys to the biggest league in the world were miles apart. Kun Agüero had already forged a reputation as a world class goalscorer at #atleticomadrid, meanwhile #stephendobbie was playing in the fourth tier of #scottishfootball just five years earlier 🏴 Out of favour at St Johnstone in 2006, Dobbie was loaned out to Scottish Third Division club #dumbarton where he found some form. Then in January 2007, #queenofthesouthfc signed him permanently from #stjohnstone In his first spell with Queens, Dobbie scored over 50 goals for the #dumfries team before Roberto Martinez signed him for Swansea City in 2009. In 2016, Dobbie returned to Scotland for his second spell with #qosfc. This bright pink kit is Queen of the South’s third shirt from the 2021-22 season. It features the names of season ticket holders and volunteers who were unable to attend games during the pandemic. The names form a diagonal stripe across the jersey. The eye catching shirt, from Italian sportswear brand Macron, also supports the club’s partnership with the White Ribbon charity which aims to engage men and boys to end violence against women and girls. This particular shirt was #matchissued to local lad Dom McMahon who was loaned out to Dalbeattie Star during the season. Tuesday 10th January 2023 SPFL Trust Trophy Quarter Final Queen of the South 0-0 Kelty Hearts (Queens win 4-2 on penalties) Att: 602 Capacity: 8,690 Dumfries has been known as ‘The Queen of the South’ since a local poet, David Dunbar stood as an MP in 1857, he referred to the town as “Queen of the South” in an address he gave. When the football club was formed in 1919, the club's founders adopted the name to represent the town, giving the new club one of the best names of anywhere. Doonhamers? People from Dumfries are often referred to as Doonhamers. I'm reliably informed it originated from the railway when Dumfries rail workers would tell their Glasgow colleagues they were going “doon hame” roughly translated, ‘down home’. The nickname stuck and the football club adopted it as well. Football has been played at Palmerston since the 1870s on what was once Palmers Toun Farm. Palmerston is one of the best, just check out those floodlights, at more than 85 feet they are the tallest freestanding floodlights in Scotland. “The Queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them.” Luke 11v31 Queens are thought to be the only UK league club to be referenced in the Bible, but according to exhaustive investigative research carried out by The Guardian, references to Arsenal, Bury and Reading were also found, as well as others partly referring to hearts, wolves, forest, hammer spurs and man's field. I'd also argue the case for ‘Leads’ as the most commonly referenced club in the Bible. Bible references or not, it's hardly been 100 years laden with silverware. Tuesday 10th January 2023 Stadium Tour Returning to one of my favourites. Big thanks to the groundsman and the staff at Palmerston for showing me around. A great day ending in a penalty shoot-out win over Kelty Hearts to round it off. The covered Portland Drive terrace remains as one of my favourite stands.
