Hymenolepis nana egg in wet mounts. These eggs are oval and smaller than those of H. diminuta, with a size range of 30 to 50 µm. On the inner membrane are two poles, from which 4-8 polar filaments spread out between the two membranes. The oncosphere has six hooks. Hymenolepiasis is the most common intestinal tapeworm infection of humans caused by worm of family cestoda, genus Hymenolepis and species nana. Parasitologists in China recently stumbled upon a remarkable find—a tapeworm fossil dating back 100 million years! This little worm, ensnared in amber from the Cretaceous Period, could hold the key to a real-life Jurassic Park scenario. Not only is this fossil a breakthrough in parasite evolutionary study, but it’s also stunningly complete. Microstructures like hooked tentacles used for latching onto and feeding are still intact! Theoretically, genetic engineers could extract DNA from the fossilized worm’s hosts. - small fish, BIG tapeworm - Meet Ligula intestinalis, a widespread tapeworm with a complex life cycle involving a tiny copepod, a fish, and a bird! It can be a little tricky for a parasite to complete its life cycle when so many different hosts are required, but this tapeworm has some amazing strategies to achieve this! One way it makes its way from a fish host (with no desire to be caught) into its final host (the birds), is to master buoyancy! As the worm grows, and grows, and grows....(it can reach ~30% of the host's weight) it changes the buoyancy of the fish causing it to rise more easily to the surface of the water. Because of this, the fish spends considerably more time at the surface and becomes an easy target for hungry birds! - Of mites and men (and chickens) - Meet Dermanyssus gallinae, a widespread ectoparasite of chickens as well as numerous wild bird species and occasionally mammals too (including unlucky humans!). Although their normal hosts are predominantly birds, when they jump to humans the infestation can be persistent as D. gallinae can complete its life cycle on a diet of exclusively human blood. On top of that, they can survive high temperatures (40+ degreed C) and temperatures below freezing too (-15 degrees C). I am so excited - I can *finally* post this! 😌 A special Christmas gift for my husband, a renowned biologist who specializes in parasitology. One of his significant areas of research is describing new species of coccidia in (primarily but not limited to) wild rodents, birds, and various reptiles. I created The Little Book of Coccidia: New Species of Apicomplexa Eimeriidae, as described by Prof. John A. Hnida with hand sewn recreations of the plated images from some of his publications. The four coccidia represented here are 1) "Eimeria sevilletensis" found in grasshopper mice; 2) "Isospera gopheri" found in a species of desert tortoise; 3) "Eimeria maricopensis" found in the Arizona cotton rat ; and 4) "Eimeria ammospermophili" found in the Harris's antelope squirrel. This has been a very personal and rewarding project to work on ; of course it took a while but I loved every minute of it. Meet the Ryukyu rabbit tick (Haemaphysalis pentalagi), the focus of the world’s first conservation program for a globally threatened parasite! This tiny tick is relegated to life with the Ryukyu black rabbit in the isolated Amamiōshima island group in southern Japan. This is the very first footage ever taken of this rare and secretive species which measures only a few millimeters in size! -A voice for unloved biodiversity in the age of extinction- With support from the IUCN and numerous researchers, vets, and conservationists around the globe, I'm extremely pleased to announce that threatened parasite species now have a voice thanks to the formation of the IUCN parasite specialist group! The main focus of the group is safeguarding threatened parasites from extinction by assessing their conservation status, developing recovery plans, and undertaking recovery efforts both in their native habitats and ex-situ in collaboration with zoos and aquaria through captive insurance populations. - Cencurut Virus - Meet the newest pathogen on the block: Cencurut Virus. This newly discovered virus was recently detected in Singapore in the widespread Asian house shrew (Suncus murinus) and the tropical tick Amblyomma helvolum. It belongs to the Orthonairovirus genus which are believed to be exclusively tick-borne. Worryingly though, this new virus is a close relative of the Crimean–Congo hemorrhagic fever virus which can have mortality rates in humans of 40% in some outbreaks, suggesting that this new virus may be quite dangerous if it were to spillover into humans. 🐮New Forest Eye (Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis) is a contagious disease that spreads rapidly in the summer months, usually within youngstock. It’s caused by Moraxella Bovis, of which nuisance flies can act as a vector. In most cases, there will be tear staining of the face, pain associated with sunlight which can disrupt grazing patterns, pus and matting of the eyelids. If both eyes are affected, then it can lead to temporary blindness. ➡️Prompt treatment, including pain relief, is essential, but speak to your vet first as other things can look the same such as foreign body in the conjunctival sac (grass awns), bovine iritis and IBR. In some cases, M. Bovis will be brought in with new stock, so always isolate or manage as one group away from the main herd. Parasites aren't rare in the United States. If you've had laboratory testing done searching for parasites, consider that lab results can be false negative. You may carry an infection the labs aren't picking up due to their lack of proper testing ability. If you have symptoms such as weight changes, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, skin disorders, immune deficiencies, allergies, pain, muscle weakness, night sweats, and nervous/sensory disorders, to name a few, you should consider parasites as root causes. Oh, here's a big one- rectal itching! It's not puritis. It's intestinal worms, and you need treatment. Treatment should always include herbs (my opinion), as being on high-dosage pharmaceuticals for an extended period can cause damage to your body- some amount can be necessary, and I like to use a combination of drugs and herbs. But, taking herbs in small amounts for an extended period, with proper dietary changes, should end the infection. While there are many holistic resources, I currently use a Rogers Hood parasite cleanse (link in bio, and they ship all over the globe- not just the US). Their ingredients are right on, and the price is comparative. Kick those suckers out of your body! 🔥 M

- Nanism - What's nanism you may ask? Well, quite simply, its when some individuals of a species remain noticeably small than others in the population when they all reach maturity. This phenomenon is observed on rare occasions throughout the animal kingdom, and in our team's recent paper on Amblyomma helvolum we observed it too! It's not entirely clear whether these micro-adults can reproduce or even what causes their small size. The one thing we can say is that its an extremely rare occurrence, at least in A. helvolum. - Gynandromorphy - Another interesting observation from our team's recent paper on Amblyomma helvolum was a beautiful case of gynandromorphy. In this instance, we observed bilateral gynandromorphy in which one half of the tick is male while the other is female. This is very clear in this species because the body of the males of A. helvolum is mostly covered in golden ornamentation which can be seen on the right side of the tick pictured here. However, as with other species, this abnormality appears to be quite rare as we only observed it in 1 of the ~700 adult A. helvolum ticks which we examined. I feel extremely privileged to have found such a special tick! - East Indies Reptile Tick - Amblyomma helvolum is perhaps the loveliest ticks in Southeast Asia and one look at its metallic-golden ornamentation is enough to see why! With colleagues from Thailand, USA, Japan, and Taiwan we re-characterised with poorly known tick species and reported the first case of human infestation by this reptile-specialist as well as the first cases of infestation by this tick in 17 different reptile species. - Portrait of a tapeworm - One of the most widespread and widely loathed groups of parasites are the tapeworms of the genus Taenia. Despite the awful diseases they sometimes cause in humans, they are undeniably elegant looking organisms. In some ways beautifully complex, yet staggeringly simple and efficient. No brain, true digestive system or respiratory system yet they've conquered the world alongside humans. - Friend or Foe? - Meet the swift lousefly (Crataerina pallida), a member of the fly family Hippoboscidae. These fascinating parasites are specialists on the common swift (Apus apus) and occur widely within Eurasia. While these parasites drink the blood of their bird hosts, Tompkins et al. (1996) showed that they had little impact on the reproductive success of their hosts; suggesting that although they may not necessarily be friends, they may not be foes either! Increasing evidence from across the natural work is suggesting that contrary to popular dogma, parasites may not be as bad of their natural hosts as is often assumed. Tompkins D. Buscando a Fasciola hepática en hígado de un bovino🔍 El parásito adulto se aloja en el hígado y conductos biliares de vacas, ovejas cabras, y otros animales, los huevos son llevados a través de la bilis al intestino, salen posteriormente en las heces 💩 En la segunda foto vemos parásitos adultos de Fasciola hepatica colectados del hígado. En el video observamos una fase de este parásito llamado Miracidio saliendo del huevo.
