When a set of knowledge is presented as the only “true” knowledge, The Authority—like when someone tells you your experience doesn’t count because DATA shows otherwise … that actually DIMINISHES knowledge by cancelling out someone else’s. That, my friends, is AGENDA, not truth. This doesn’t mean WE’RE always right—at all. It does mean taking all the knowledge available to us so we can discern the truth. We have ways of knowing that are not based in old-paradigm structures of authority—and it’s time we honed those ways of knowing. (ongoing) Experiments in ongoingness: Location Three Format One: Studio experimentation 4: Imprimatura Part 3 Once the earth tones have been laid down, the imprimatura moves to the diad or triad, in some cases split complementary colours to the natural hue of the subject and the imprimatura. Since I opted to use green and blue-green underpainting in this format, I chose to offset these hues with a tinted violet as highlight, situated within the triad. In this instance the result is less than desirable, and I fear that in my alchemical dabbling I may have, momentarily stepped off course. This corresponds closely to James Elkins’s writing in that sometimes when we lose sight of the planned things can either go very well or very wrong. Artists should risk “not merely pushing painting into making images” To painters, unexpected and inexplicable metamorphoses are the stock in trade of everyday work. No one knows what paint does, and when an artist is fooled into thinking paint can be entirely understood, then the studio becomes an annoying tedium where paint has to be pushed into place to make images.
