My drawing of the “Origin of the Pileated Woodpecker.” It’s a Cherokee story about a woman that had a garden that she spent all her time in, cutting and planting and keeping it so perfect that she would get upset whenever children would come into it. There was an old watering hole near where she lived. Children loved to swim there. The only problem was that the only path to water went through her garden. Whenever she’d see children going across her garden, she’d run outside and start waving her hands furiously at the them, in an effort to chase them away. Coming at 1pm est today is this EPIC 1973 Haute Couture Givenchy dress and I thought I would share a little about its history beforehand … The book Givenchy Catwalk says of this collection that “Hubert de Givenchy presented a collection made up of soft lines with dresses that suddenly highlighted the shape of the body before the pleated skirts flared out towards the bottom.” It is interesting to note that some of the looser more flowing designs from this collection were a part of the November 28, 1973 presentation at the Royal Opera at the Palace of Versailles as part of the fashion show that later became to know become known as the “Battle of Versailles”. The book notes that “Givenchy took part in the evening event to raise money for the château restoration, presenting his dresses alongside designers by four other Persian Couture houses competing against five American design designers”. Now I have found nothing that suggests that this dress was a part of that show but it definitely has the feel of what went and it is interesting to me to see pieces produced knowing that show was going to happen as that would have been on the top of his mind. The twin of dress was shot that year both for Vogue Paris and British Vogue and I love that these give you an idea of how amazing it sits on the body! “Bear Shirt 2,” 2024, Stanley, 5 x 7’, acrylic, tape, cloth and encaustic on canvas on a wood cradle. This is the first offspring of “Bearshirt,” a painting I posted here, late last year. It was purchased recently by the Cherokee Nation. After a morning of searching, I found my grandparents’ old abandoned home: wood dwelling that was built probably in the 1930’s. It became the subject of a painting called, “Bear Shirt.” The result was so important for me that I felt it a crime not to do more versions of it in order to familiarize myself with the type of role I established in my process. I call it a masterpiece which means master piece. Like master key. Elegantly Papered is a major collection of over 1300 international titles and 100,000 magazines curated since 2002 as a business (and much earlier as a personal hobby). You might say we are mag junkies. Michelle is a vintage fashion specialist and Conor is a photographer.
