I visited my solo exhibition yesterday and dropped some koi greetings cards into the shop. It was nice & meditative in there, peaceful & quiet, I liked it but … only 2 new comments in the visitors book since my launch party. Hmm. I wish people understood how appreciated it is by the artist if they leave a comment, any comment, even ‘I saw your exhibition’ ! The last time I exhibited there, 10 years ago, I left an acrylic box next to a giclee print saying if you’d like a chance to win this print put your email address in this box, you’ll get subscribed to my newsletter but you can unsubscribe any time. I nicked the idea off @chris_prout_artist 😘 When I came back, to my amazement , there were hundreds of email addresses in the box & just a couple of messages in the visitors book! So I know people do walk through there! Anyway it kicked off my mailing list & reassured me that people had seen the work. I may do something similar again just to get that feedback or I’ll never know! It’s a great venue but not an art gallery as such, just a nice space to hang the work in & hope to connect with somebody passing through who didn’t necessarily know they were going to see art that day as they were visiting an historic house. So I’m just making the most of : A) Having completed all those paintings which I’ll be able to have fun with reallocating them around the country to other galleries where people arrive with the sole intention of buying art. That’s the difference & don’t knock a gallery, the world would be a duller place without them. My work is done, this makes me happy. B) Making the most of the venue, using it as a show piece, photographing & videoing the work in this stunning environment. I’ve just posted the video to my YouTube channel. It looks nice. I’ve sold one painting so far. I’ll come to that later. I don’t blame people for wanting a holiday rather than a painting! I do too! Too much flipping rain!

Kiki Smith, Woven Worlds. Arp Museum Bahnho Rolandseck. Du 21 avril au 20 octobre 2024. L’artiste américaine Kiki Smith (née en 1954) est l’une des artistes féministes les plus influentes de sa génération. Alors que ses premières œuvres sont caractérisées par les débats sociaux des années 1980, tels que ceux sur le SIDA, elle s’est ensuite concentrée intensément sur le corps féminin. Au début des années 1990, elle a commencé à se concentrer de plus en plus sur l’environnement et la nature en tant qu’espace digne de protection. Développée en étroite collaboration avec l’artiste, l’exposition réunit cinquante quatre œuvres. Au cœur de l’exposition se trouvent ses tapisseries jacquard magnifiquement conçues. Ces œuvres colorées de grand format, dont certaines entrelacées de fils d’argent, invitent le spectateur à un voyage visuel exponentiel et magique. Elles combinent l’intemporel avec notre présent immédiat dans une clarté poétique et féerique. I love my job….first day back in the studio after a few weeks away. Began the day starting a few commission pieces, but wasn’t feeling the love, so decided to loosen up with a couple of small canvas boards that were hanging around the studio.  The taoist text BaoPuzi by Ge Hong mentions protective drawings, such as the river chart talisman.They are drawn lines that look like characters or maps. The above diagram is a talisman that acts as a map of the text. A key that can open the inner room. Imagine a house with four rooms and a garden in the middle. Each of the four surrounding rooms points in a cardinal direction, and in one of the four surrounding rooms the text starts, but as in a physical room, only adjacent rooms can be opened after that. The text has no beginning or end, it starts arbitrarily with either N, S, E, or WEST. It is three-dimensional and opens up to meandering from part to part. As in a total installation artwork, the direction of reading is limited by the physical framework. So that EAST cannot be read after WEST without reading another cardinal direction or the central space CENTER first. The geometric structure provides a binary relationship between the spaces. Appena Tornata a casa mi sono precipitata a lavorare ai nuovi autoscatti realizzati negli ultimi giorni a Palazzo Adriano, luogo magico in cui è stato girato il film capolavoro di Tornatore "Nuovo cinema Paradiso" Questa serie ho scelto di intitolarla "Toto'! " realizzanta in giro per la citta', ripercorrendo i luoghi agibili del film, in onore al piccolo protagonista del film, che oggi è un uomo che racconta la sua esperienza della quasi cecità (e chi mi conosce sa quanto questo argomento mi tocchi nel profondo)., e in onore ad un altro grande Toto', la persona che mi ha permesso tutto questo. Omaggio a Palazzo Adriano, alla sua luce, alla sua bellezza, alla sua gente, per (cercare di) raccontare l'eterna Sicilia. Quella di ieri e quella di oggi. this still life holds time like a vase holds water Simon Verelst draws our attention to the then present moment, capturing the flowers as they are in that moment & also throws a line into the future with the decay already starting on a couple of the leaves at the bottom of the painting, partly obscured by darkening over the ages, we can see that he’s working both inside & outside the frame - he’s painting the flowers in the moment, at the same time drawing our attention to the fact that he’s painting them - a couple of buds are outside the painted-in frame he may as well call it ‘these are not tulips and roses’, prefiguring magritte by some centuries
