It was 2006 and I was invited on a Mediterranean cruise with my boyfriend‘s family. I was in my 20s and figuring myself out through trial and error. It turns out, the relationship proved to be an error, which my boyfriend decided to correct at the beginning of our cruise, somewhere between Italy and Greece. I had two choices, to cry in my room for the remaining two weeks or to live it up knowing I was now released from this toxic relationship. I chose the later and had a blast, flirting with possibilities and exploring newfound aspects of myself that I had kept hidden to please those around me. After the cruise, in an airport duty free shop in Venice, I ran across Ralph Hot. I took one sniff, then a second, walked away and came back for a third. I was hooked! To my young 20-something nose, Hot smelled grown up, bold and confident. The fragrance smelled like everything I wanted to be but was yet to become. At the time, it was a lot of money and the idea of purchasing perfume seemed like an extravagance meant for others, not me. But the perfume drew me in and I knew I couldn’t walk away without a bottle. Hot became my signature for the next few years. She followed me through adventures I never could have imagined when I first purchased. In many ways, I grew up with her. Pissara Umavijani is my fragrant fairy godmother. I discovered Parfums Dusita during Covid and quickly developed an emotional attachment, to the point where I become misty-eyed when meditating on the role it has played in my life. Through loss and struggle, Dusita fragrances seemed to appear at just the right time, providing strength, beauty, and the courage to persevere. Pissara has taken my proverbial pumpkins and turned them into stagecoaches with her perfume. A few weeks ago another series of difficult events occurred and I secretly wondered if I was a character in a Lemony Snicket novel. I went for a morning walk around the park to clear my mind and find calm, when suddenly my fragrant fairy godmother appeared in the form of an IG message. The lovely people at Parfums Dusita informed me that I had won a bottle of my choosing. I burst out laughing and thought, “True to form, Dusita! You’ve done it again.” I knew immediately which fragrance I would select. Rosarine is a perfume I sampled when it was first released. I enjoyed the fragrance but had a difficult time remembering its characteristics (I have smelled many perfumes since). When the package arrived I immediately sprayed and realized I had made an excellent decision. Rosarine literally makes the back of my head flutter on initial spray, in the best possible way. Rosarine is the sensation I get when gingerly biting on a ripe raspberry until it bursts in my mouth. It is how I imagine a glass of rose juice would smell, if there was such a thing. She is tangy, lightly sweet, succulent, and the essence of pure rose. I love this perfume so much that it could easily be my spring signature fragrance, if I believed in signature fragrances. What’s the connection between engineering and perfume? For a long time the obvious answer was math and science. I was born a math lover. It was a language that made sense and a puzzle easy to solve. In eighth grade, I switched schools. Though I was in honors math, they thought I needed to “prove it” to switch me to honors at the new school. After the teacher got over his annoyance, he wasn’t ashamed to call me to the front and say (in the worst pronunciation of my name I’ve ever heard), “he-lie-duh”, would you explain this problem to the class? Ever since middle school, I was a shoe-in Industrial Engineer - IE - “ imaginary engineer” (how our colleagues refer to us. 🤣🤓) During my projects at the hospital, I quickly realized there was something more important than offering state of the art solutions. ✨ Get to know the users ✨ Without their suggestions and buy in, results would never work. Becoming a perfumer was a pure chance. Had my sense of smell not completely been altered during pregnancy, I wouldn’t be telling the story this way. I wore a certain nameless pistachio fragrance sample to the grocery store months ago and became self-conscious when I realized how much I smelled like a food product. I gave another nameless pistachio fragrance a try and felt sick; it smelled much too cloying and juvenile, like I was wearing a nutty dessert topped with whipped cream. As much as I like the concept of pistachio in perfumery, I started to assume it wasn’t for me. Enter Une Pistache, the pistachio perfume that is just right for this Goldilocks. Floral, powder, and musk notes balance the nuttiness of this fragrance nicely. It’s sweet but not obnoxiously so. Une Pistache conjures images of eating pistachios and drinking something lightly sweet and frothy on a spring day, while sitting on a picnic blanket, and watching rabbits scamper nearby. It’s one I enjoy wearing on the weekend or to bed. Une Pistache isn’t the most sophisticated fragrance but it makes me smile. Sometimes, that’s all I’m looking for in a fragrance. Sol Salgado is downright sensual. It’s a suede-like, musky, salty skin fragrance. It is the smell of wearing my husband’s shirt from the previous day and feeling comforted. Sol Salgado is my favorite in the Thomas De Monaco line, followed by Fuego Futuro. I think this fragrance is overshadowed by the more popular Raw Gold. Frankly, they are all good but Sol Salgado is the one that made me feel an instant emotional connection. If you haven’t tried the line I highly recommend sampling! OPIUM Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent is an Oriental-Spicy fragrance. Launched in 1977, created by Jean Louis Sieuzac and Raymond Chailland of Givaudan. . A fragrance that exalts exoticism, sensuality and addiction to a perfume. Controversial for the name and advertising, which celebrated "the Chinese" in the style of YSL for the 1977 collection, OPIUM was a huge success! A beautiful perfume that raised the Oriental family to another level. . REVIEW: The fragrance opens intensely, I smell it spicy with cloves, cinnamon, coriander and incense, all well rounded by two main notes, myrrh and opoponax (sweet resin) that when mixed with vanilla leave this fragrance sweet and warm. The citrus notes are declared at the top (bergamot, mandarin and citrus) they give freshness and accompany the spices but they are not protagonists here. Fruits like peach and apricot are there to give body and sustenance to the fragrance, but I don't smell them. Opulent flowers are also present (rose, jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, carnation) but hints of lily-of-the-valley leave something lighter and softer to that opulent weight of florals. I clearly detect the flowers, the oriental and spicy notes. . A charming, warm, balsamic, spicy, resinous, incensed perfume, very elegant, exotic and in a certain way also very addictive.
