Day 10- Huề #perfumeriver #walkingstreet #haivanpass Today was hit and miss. First our driver never showed up to pick us up in Hồi Ăn. After finding another one we had the gorgeous drive up the Hai Van Pass. Beautiful views of Da Nang and coast line. I get why people choose to do this by motorcycle. It was extremely curvy but the views were worth it. Finally made it to Huề. Much bigger than Hồi Ăn but still nice. Took a sunset tour. Pretty resorts line one side and lit up bridges. But there is a dark side of the river that was sad to see as there was so much garbage and plastic. The couple that took us were nice and grateful for the business. Went to walking street and had an amazing coconut coffee. The streets were busy. Went to Xin Chào for dinner but the crispy tofu was not as good as the ribs we had at the bar across from our hotel earlier. Lol. Super tired but enjoying the cooler weather as we travel North. Tomorrow we head to Hà Nội!! 🫶🇻🇳🩷

Announcing the beginning of what we called the "Hue Olympics," aka "The Great Vietnamese-American Friendship Sports Festival" in 1966. As Youth and Sports Advisor in Hue, I organized the Festival with my South Vietnamese Counterpart, the Province Youth and Sports Chief. US Marines from their big base south of Hue were the American athletes. Vietnamese athletes came from all over, some of them no doubt VC, but putting war aside for sports. Playing the "Connection Game" immediately takes us to ancient Greece and old Hawaii. War was halted in Greece for the Olympic Games, held every 4 years in honor of Zeus, king of the gods. In Hawaii, the Makahiki season, from mid-October and extending for the next 4 months, featured Lono, the agricultural god, and peace, sports, and games. The first photo shows CBS-TV covering the opening event, a 5-mile race into and around magnificent Hue Citadel, home of the last Vietnamese Emperors, destroyed in the great battle for Hue in Tet '68, restored, and now a World Heritage Site. Next came a swimming race across the broad and beautiful Perfume River, soccer, basketball, volleyball, judo, karate, and a demonstration baseball game between 2 Marine teams. The Vietnamese crowd loved it! I held my breath repeatedly throughout the 3-day Festival, fearing a VC attack, but it was all fun and games, and a joy for the participants and the thousands of spectators. For 3 magic days in Hue, it seemed like the war was over.Then, as in ancient Greece and old Hawaii, we flawed humans went back to the Grim Reaper's work. The memories and lessons remain. Dag 9 Individuele studiereis Vietnam 🇻🇳 Dinsdag 19 maart 2024. Vannacht helaas maar kort geslapen, want om 05:30 uur werden wij opgehaald om richting de luchthaven te gaan. Vandaag verlaten wij Hanoi (waar het sinds gisterenavond enorm regent) om verder door de trekken naar Hue en dit doen wij dus per vliegtuig. Ondanks dat het nog erg vroeg is, is het toch al druk op de weg en dit komt omdat de lokale bevolking hun dag al vroeg start. Meestal begint deze op de markt, welke om 06:00 uur begint. 06:15 uur zijn wij op de luchthaven, eerst ingecheckt, door alle controles gegaan en daarna even ontbeten. Om 08:15 uur gingen wij de lucht in met Vietnam Airlines. Aankomst Hue 09:13 uur en gelukkig schijnt de zon. 09:45 uur zaten wij in de taxi op weg naar ons overnachtingshotel; White Lotus Hue hotel waar wij om 10:15 uur aankomen. Bij aankomst was onze kamer nog niet klaar, dus andere kleding uit de koffer gehaald, ons omgekleed en toen per hop on hop off de stad verkent en later hebben wij Grab gebruikt om sneller bij een bepaald punt te komen, aangezien de bus ieder heel uur kwam. Voor de lunch kwamen wij uit bij Nook; leuk, klein, gezellig restaurant met een uitgebreide kaart en ook gericht op Europeanen. Aan het einde van de middag hebben wij de Citadel bezocht en zijn daarna per Grab teruggegaan naar het hotel. Hier hebben wij ons opgefrist en zijn in de avond sushi 🍣 gaan eten bij Shino 2. Heel erg lekker gegeten en het kost echt helemaal niets; wij waren nog geen €20,- kwijt voor 2 drankjes per persoon en een boot sushi met 32 stuks. Day 171-175 brought us to the last stop of our south east asian countries of the journey: Xin Chao Vietnam. After buzzling, touristy, historic (amazing royal Citadelcity, Pagodas and Tombs), colourful (everything is illuminated and decorated), bicyclefriendly and homey (with wind on the face, fish in the nose and the river under our feet like sitting at the Elbe) Hue, we finally met the Ocean again at Da Nang. Not a very exciting and beautiful town (except an fire spitting bridge) but with the Ocean the soul finds peace and happyness and exploring the natural sourrondings by foot, bike and scooty brought what we needed. We saw 800 year old Banyam-trees, heard the endangered monkeys around us, found enchanting cave-tempels and stunning 360 views at the Marble Mountains, enjoyed Vietnams chay cuisine, bouldering @danang_climbing_gym and rooftop yoga with the ocean underneath. Som hovedstad i Vietnam var citadellet i Hue residens for kejserne. Det er opført i første halvdel af 1800-tallet med den forbudte by i Kina som inspiration, men med lån fra europæisk fæstningsbygning. Hele komplekset er 10 km langt hele vejen rundt. Så noget mindre end det i Beijing, men efter min mening flottere 🙂 På trods at det meste blev ødelagt under Vietnamkrigen og meget stadig mangler at blive genopført. Ved ankomst var vi så heldige at se vagtskiftet🙂 Derefter gik vi rundt med lokalguide i området og så de bygninger som kejserne, deres familie, embedsmænd og officicerer boede i eller anvendte til officielle begivenheder. Helt klart et besøg værd🙂 Efter besøget i citadellet kørte vi en kort tur til Thien Mu pagoden, en af de ældste i området tilbage fra 1500-tallet, som også er kendt i Vietnam for dens munk som i optakten til Vietnamkrigen satte ild til sig selv for at protestere mod den antibuddhistiske sydvietnamesiske præsident. Dagens sidste inkluderede indslag var en sejltur på Duftenes flod på en dragebåd. Meget flot udsmykning og skønt med en kølende sejltur i varmen😎 30 grader og høj solskin er for meget at kunne lege turist i, så mere sightseeing blev det ikke til i Hue. Men helt klart et besøg værd med mere tid I citadellet og de kongelige grave🙂 Den første aften i Hue var vi til folkloreaften med lokal vietnamesisk musik. Thien Mu pagoda 🇻🇳 This beautiful Buddhist site stands on a small hill overlooking the Perfume River and is home to its resident monks. The construction of the site links back to an old local legend that an elderly lady appeared on the hill telling of a lord who'd build a pagoda on that site. The site has beautiful temples and gardens to explore. You'll probably need about an hour to visit and the entrance if free. It's located a bit further away from the central hotels of Hue so we opted to take a cheap grab ride there.
