This Friday we are putting Elisabeth Subrin in the spotlight. Subrin is a New York based director and artist recognized for her films and installations internationally. Her work has been shown in festivals, exhibitions, as well as the The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the Vienna Viennale. In the past year Subrin released her documentary short Maria Schneider, 1983 which received international attention. At the Cannes International FIlm Festival it was nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the 2023 César. Subrin is also a professor at Temple University’s Film and Media Arts program, working closely with the students to teach them the art and skills of film directing. This year students at University of Pennsylvania have come together to create their own film festival. The festival’s founder, Maya Pratt, decided to create this festival after her time abroad in Kenya, teaching students the art of storytelling through filmmaking. The film festival focuses on global stories, but also welcomes stories of local communities. It is meant to represent what the students of Penn have become a part of, within their community and outside of the university setting. This Friday we are happy to showcase Nadia Hironaka. Hironaka is a filmmaker and installation artist who works to create art and experiences that will spark dialogue about her culture. She is a Philadelphia native, but has branched outside of the city, working residencies and screening her work across the country. She is currently the department chair of Film and Video at the Maryland Institute College of Art while still being an active artist. Since 2008 Hironaka has been working with her partner and fellow artist Mathhew Suib. The couple’s most recent film is called Field Companion, a 20 minute long film that showcases the nature and wildlife near the pair’s home. The film is made to be screened as an installation. The walls are covered in projections of the greenery and wildlife as the film plays on a TV in the middle of the room. This Saturday, June 4th at 2pm EST Filmmaker Martin Zied will be premiering his documentary, Voice Messages. The event will take place at the Underground Theater at Temple University and has been a highly anticipated release. Voice Messages is a documentary that combines singing, speaking, science, sociology and history to examine the power and beauty of the human voice. The documentary features multiple Grammy award winners Linda Ronstadt, Vince Gill, Lalah Hathaway, Take 6; Comedian Billy West and voiceover artist Andromeda Dunker. Emmy award winning writer, producer, director and local Philadelphia filmmaker Martin Zied says the inspiration for the documentary came from hearing a fellow student sing “Without a Song” when he was eight years old and how it brought him to tears. He’s been fascinated by our voices from that moment on and decided to explore the human voice in ways that have never been seen or heard together in the same place. Zied is a six-time Emmy Award winner with extensive television and film experience. He was extremely persistent with the completion of this film and even raised finishing funds through Indiegogo to see it all the way through! We are proud to recognize Selena Yip in today’s Female Filmmaker Friday. Selena is the Festival Director of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. The festival is described by Selena as a “showcase event of Philadelphia Asian American Film and Filmmakers, a non-profit organization founded in 2008 dedicated to supporting and highlighting the experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through creative community- focused programs.” Selena is a second generation, Chinese American child of Hong Kong immigrants and has found strong ties in Philadelphia’s Chinatown. With a desire to be more involved in their community, Yip joined the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation to produce a short documentary called Staying Put: Stories of Chinatown’s Resistance. The short documentary tells the story of Philadelphia Chinatown’s historic struggles with inequitable urban development and their advocacy towards a better future. Yip joined @phillyaaff in 2018 and quickly climbed the ranks becoming festival director in 2020. Selena Yip is an inspiration and we are so proud to have such talented women breaking the ceiling in the Philadelphia region. I confess I’ve never imagined I would become a filmmaker besides an actress. And this story began with a dream: “Clandestinos: o sonho começou”, the series, in 2010. I acted in a TV series where I was the camera girl. The great @falcaojoaooficial saw a quick video of me shot in the middle of the theater audition waiting line. Detail: I wasn’t selected for the audition but I went there anyway. My dream was so strong that I asked to the camera guy to shoot me and I told my story. Some years later I was invited to the series and only because of that moment that I had courage to think out of the box and asked to be shot. And then everything started. I could buy my camera (the same one of the picture from yesterday) and a new path started. I’m telling you my story to inspire you: never, NEVER, give up on your dreams. Go for it! And always follow your intuition. ✨🔮🎬♥️ Eu nunca imagine que tornaria uma “fazedora de filmes” além de atriz. E tudo isso começou com um sonho: “Clandestinos: o sonho começou” a série, em 2010. Eu atuei numa série de TV em que eu era a câmera girl. O grande João Falcão viu um rápido vídeo meu feito na fila do teste da peça de teatro. Detalhe: eu não tinha sido selecionada para o teste, mas fui mesmo assim. Meu sonho era tão forte que eu pedi ao câmera na fila para me filmar e eu contei minha história. Alguns anos depois, eu fui convidada para a série e somente por causa daquele momento em que tive a coragem de pensar fora da caixa e pedir para ser filmada. E foi aí que tudo começou. Eu pude comprar minha câmera ( a mesma dessa foto de ontem) e começar um novo caminho. Estou contando minha história para te inspirar e dizer: nunca, NUNCA, desista dos seus sonhos. Lute por eles! And I could talk about the film process and answer some questions too.
