Another great day of filming for our documentary series, The Art of Aviation. Yesterday we interviewed renowned aviation artist, Keith Ferris. Our crew got an insider look into his life growing up on Kelly Air Base and watching his father flying fighter planes in WWII. He has had a fascinating career flying around the world for the military art program and has met some of the most decorated veterans of our time. Keith is known for his murals in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum as well as over 50 paintings showcased in the Pentagon. His unique technique sets his work apart with exacting precision. His patented camouflage design can be found on fighter jets in the US and Canada. Thank you to both Keith and his daughter Nancy for hosting us! We had a great day filming for our documentary series, The Art of Aviation, at the Air Mobility Command Museum in Dover, Delaware. If you love airplanes and American History, you must go check out this museum! Their aircraft collection and exhibits are fascinating. We are grateful for the support the AMC and Dover AFB team has given us. The first episode of The Art of Aviation focuses on acclaimed aviation artist Gil Cohen. His nose art appears on the B17 Sleepy Time Gal, a replica of the original which flew in WWII. Gil also has an original painting in the Operation Nickel Grass exhibit featuring a C5 transport plane delivering a tank to the Israeli forces at Ben Gurion Airport during the Yom Kippur war. We were fortunate to be given a tour by AMC Deputy Director, Eric Czerwinski, who toured us around the property and the C5; it is enormous inside, large enough to fit six Greyhound buses! Working on this documentary series has been a huge history lesson for our team and we are excited to share a glimpse into our doc film series. This week marks the 79th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of German-held Western Europe by the allied forces. Approximately 150,000 infantry troops landed on Normandy Beach in occupied France on January 6, 1944. At the time this invasion was the largest land, sea and air attack ever attempted. D-Day turned out to be the beginning of the end to WWII, one of the bloodiest and most significant battles in history. Enormous sacrifices were made by these brave men and women who risked their lives to protect the world from evil. Honoring our US military by donating to the USO and other organizations like Folds of Honor, the Robert Irvine Foundation and Team Freedom Cares, is one way to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives fighting and for those who continue to serve and protect our freedoms. Our documentary, The Art of Aviation, sheds light on this historic battle and many other conflicts throughout history. Combat artists documented historic battles long before WWII and with the military art programs in place artists have opportunities to witness war firsthand, allowing them to document historic conflicts around the world. Their artwork provides a window into the lives of these brave heroes. Reflecting on these moments in time ensures they are never forgotten. This Friday we’re highlighting Director A.V. Rockwell, an up and coming director who took Sundance by storm with her first feature film A Thousand and One. The gritty film set in 90’s Harlem garnered her the prestigious U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Based on some of her own life experiences, the film discusses a mother's struggle to raise her son while fighting gentrification, correctional institutions and the foster care system. Lead character, Inez, played by the multi-talented Teyana Taylor, vows to embrace her independence and raise her son leaving her storied past behind. This weekend make your way out to West Chester for their seventeenth annual film festival, April 28th to 30th. The West Chester Film Festival showcases short films from around the globe. This week we are excited to showcase Eunic Levis, a first-generation Dominican American director and writer. Levis’ goal with her work is to blur the lines of genre to create films that inspire her love for horror, fantasy, and sci-fi. While Levis is from the Bronx, New York, she has started to create a network for herself in the Philadelphia film scene. Her most recent project, Ro & The Stardust split its time between filming in New York and Philadelphia. The space fantasy short was selected for the Netflix sponsored 2021 NALIP Latino Lens Women of Color Short Film Incubator and became an Oscar qualifying short by winning Best Narrative Short at the 25th Annual Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival. This week we are happy to introduce you to award winning filmmaker, Gabriela Watson-Burkett. She was born and raised in Brazil, and is now a Philadelphia based producer and educator. Watson-Burkett’s practice is focused on documentary work that explores Latinx culture and female empowerment. Her first documentary, “Nosotros, Afroperuanos” (We, Afro-Peruvians), was screened internationally and praised for its commentary on the issue of racial equality in Peru. One great way to break into the film industry is to become a Covid Compliance Officer. This position was created by the production industry in 2020 to ensure safety of cast and crew while on set and in the field. Despite the winding down of Covid, CCO’s are still in demand and perform a critical role in the day-to-day operation of productions.
