My soul needed some art immersion today! I was drawn to several early 20th century works at @themuseumofmodernart, including these: 1. A brilliantly curated gallery of #Cubism. 2. Revisiting a painting that has haunted me since I first studied it in high school: “I and the Village” by #Chagall, 3. New to me: fascinating Charles #Sheeler 1923 “Self-Portrait” that is mostly a realistic phone of its day with shadowy background. 4. Recent #eclipse fever drew me to this beautiful “The #Moon,” 1928, by Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral. 5. One more that’s new to me and maybe my favorite of this visit: Francis #Picabia’s 1914 work (“I See Memory of My Dear Udnie”) that looks industrial, mechanical, biological and wow — those colors! #i❤️ny🗽

"De nombreux botanistes étudient la croissance de plantes et en font des simulations. Cela m’a donné l’idée d’imaginer des plantes qui n'existent pas, mais qui sont calquées sur ces formes de croissance que l’on retrouve dans la nature. J’ai développé ainsi un herbier composé de graines virtuelles. Puis, comme un paysagiste, je crée avec ces graines un jardin virtuel qui va se transformer dans le temps. J'ai imaginé quatre différentes générations de fleurs virtuelles : les « Sur-Natures » en 2004 avec 18 graines virtuelles, puis les « Fractal Flowers » en 2008 avec 90 graines, les « Trans-Natures » en 2012 avec une centaine de graines et dernièrement « Extra-Natural » en 2015 avec 70 graines. Les plantes poussent, se développent et meurent. Lorsqu'elles disparaissent, elles renaissent ailleurs". Miguel Chevalier présente son travail en résonance avec l'œuvre de Picabia au Centre d'Art de Mougins pour cette saison estivale. ▪️ 'Many botanists study plant growth and simulate it. This gave me the idea to imagine plants that do not exist, but that are modeled on these forms of growth that are found in nature. I developed a herbarium composed of virtual seeds. Then, like a landscaper, I create with these seeds a virtual garden that will transform in time. I imagined four different generations of virtual flowers: «Sur-Natures» in 2004 with 18 virtual seeds, then «Fractal Flowers» in 2008 with 90 seeds, «Trans-Natures» in 2012 with a hundred seeds and recently «Extra-Natural» in 2015 with 70 seeds. La sua attività di artista comincia negli anni 60, quando, influenzato dalle tendenze pop esplose in America nello stesso periodo, inizia a creare opere che ricercano contenuti ironici ed eclettici. Simple, yet highly precise shapes define the physiognomy of the sitter in few but intelligent strokes, achieving textural verisimilitude in a great exercise of mastery that owes a great deal to the techniques of random literary graphic composition (calligram) practiced by the surrealists. 👨🎨 Francis Picabia (French, 1879-1953) was an avant-garde painter that revolutionized the scene in which he worked and lived with his striking use of color and transgressive portraits. A multidisciplinary artist, his work encompasses many artistic movements with a particular mastery in painting. He began his trajectory fascinated by Impressionism, but the arrival of the avant-garde movements brought him closer to cubism, along with the Puteaux Group. He cultivated a modern but serious art until he joined Dadaism, a current where he displayed his greatest talent adopting that nihilistic, cold, ironic and destructive tone typical of Dada, and becoming one of the key figures of the movement. "Série danse" Qu'est-ce qu'ils devaient se marrer ! Francis Picabia en ballerine dans le film "Entr’acte", 1922. . Chaque chose que je lis, vois, découvre sur Francis Picabia m'émerveille et surtout me fait tellement rire. . En 1922, Picabia commande à René Clair, qui est alors comédien, critique ou assistant réalisateur, un petit film censé assurer l'entracte de "Relâche", un ballet dadaïste au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Il en résulte un délire surréaliste, baptisé simplement "Entr'acte", qui fait scandale et assure à son jeune auteur une réputation. . Le film est une suite d'images surréalistes. Voici la note écrite par Francis Picabia qui servit de fil directeur au film : - Assaut de boxe par des gants blancs sur écran noir. - Partie d'échecs entre Duchamp et Man Ray. - Jet d'eau manœuvré par Picabia balayant le jeu. - Jongleur et Père La Colique. - Chasseur tirant sur un œuf d'autruche sur jet d'eau, de l'œuf sort une colombe. Elle vient se poser sur la tête du chasseur. Un deuxième tirant sur elle tue le premier chasseur. Il tombe. L'oiseau s'envole. - Onze personnes couchées sur le dos présentent le dessous de leurs pieds. - Danseuse sur une glace transparente, cinématographiée par en dessous. - Gonflage de ballons et de paravents en caoutchouc sur lesquels seront dessinées des figures accompagnées d'inscriptions. - Un enterrement : corbillard traîné par un chameau. Etc. . Picabia osait tout, faisait tout ! Alors je trouve que beaucoup des "performances" faites aujourd'hui, cent ans plus tard, sont incroyablement ringardes et démodées. . Sans titre, 1940, Francis Picabia (1878-1953). Quand Picabia peint ce portrait, Apollinaire est mort depuis longtemps, depuis 22 ans, en 1918. Je ne savais pas qu'ils ont été très proches vers les années 1910. Je l'apprends dans la biographie impressionnante de Laurence Campa empruntée à la bibliothèque (parue en 2013 chez Gallimard). Et donc je regarde sur internet les tableaux de Picabia, que je connais très mal. Et je pense à eux deux. Page 392 de la biographie : "...Excellent compagnon d'ivresse et de délire, Picabia emmenait Apollinaire dans de folles équipées automobiles dans le Paris nocturne; avenir de la peinture, douleur de vivre, désordres de l'amour, ils réinventaient tout à grand renfort de paradoxes et d' incongruités, associations curieuses, sonorités saugrenues, phénomènes ondulatoires.
