This is a small experiment I've conducted through seeing how light affects the growth of potato corms (the part we eat that stores all of the nutrients as the foliage dies down over winter seasons). It is clear which one has been kept in the dark and those that have been allowed to grow in water in the sun. The distinct lack of chlorophyll production shows as there is visibly no green and only very small leaves that haven't fully formed. This potato was only living off of the nutrients it had stored up and had no other means of producing any new nutrients past that. An interesting feature however was the abundance of stems, having 5 stems in total, for a better chance of finding the sunlight. It hadn't set any roots either, likely due to the lack of moisture on the surface and so it didn't want to put energy into producing them. Diaries) I got Stefan last April in Oregon. He has had some ups and downs and a lot of pruning. Moving out of the damp and slightly dark climate has allowed him to flourish again. It’s Woody Plants Wednesday, nature lovers! This week we’re taking a look at Amorpha fruticosa, commonly known as desert false indigo. This woody shrub is found between 2500 and 7000 feet elevation in Arizona, typically in moist soils near streams and ditches. Its alternate leaves are pinnately compounded with up to ten pairs of oblong leaflets per leaf. It flowers between April and June with dense, narrow spikes of dark purple flowers with orange anthers. Its fruits are very small legumes with one or two seeds. Desert false indigo is a member of the legume family Fabaceae, and like many members of that family, it has a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria that allow it to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere into a usable form for itself and nearby plants. Its genus name Amorpha refers to the fact that, unlike most members of the Legume family, its flowers only have one petal. Its species epithet fruticosa means shrubby in Latin. Desert false indigo is the larval host plant for the clouded sulphur, grey hairstreak, and silver-spotted skipper among other butterfly species. The fragrance of its flowers attract a plethora of bees and butterflies. The plant contains some indigo pigment than can be used as a dye, and an insecticide compound amorphol can be extracted from its foliage.
