A NATIVE BEAUTY. What's not to like? This perennial (Knautia arvensis, the field scabious) with an long flowering period is an attractive, low-maintenance addition to any garden. The colour of the flowers can vary, with shades ranging from pale violet to light pink. Knautia arvensis is easily maintained by self-seeding. The seeds are also very popular with goldfinches. Native to Europe, Siberia and the Caucasus, in its natural habitat it grows mainly in nutrient-rich meadows, extensively farmed fields and along roadsides. In the garden, it loves open, sunny spots and well-drained, rather dry soils, where it remains more stable and flowers particularly abundantly. Knautia arvensis is highly valued by insects, especially butterflies, as a valuable source of nectar. Some species use it as caterpillar food, too. Knautias change their leaves over the course of the growing season. In early spring, the leaves are rounded and only slightly serrated. The further the year progresses and the more the knautia flower, the more the leaves are slit. PERFECT TIMING. This year, the Swiss Federal Council decided that there will be a ban on the sale, gift and propagation of Trachycarpus fortunei (Chusan palm) from September 2024. This Asian palm species is spreading rapidly in the south of Switzerland - there it is naturalized and omnipresent. Opinions apparently differ as to whether it also poses a real threat to nature north of the Alps in our country. I have heard and read various voices on the matter. Be that as it may, plant specimens that are already in Swiss gardens and pots are officially allowed to remain even after the deadline. In any case, our Chusan palm has formed four inflorescences for the first time ever this season. That's perfect timing, isn't it? 🙈 I will let them bloom but remove them before the berries ripen (if it is a female plant anyway...). So the pollinators will benefit, but the reproduction is managed. And the unripe, dried berry stands will then make great Christmas decoration for indoors. ❓❓ Do you like Trachycarpus fortunei? ❓❓ And then there is an interesting plot twist to this whole story: "In 2023, a South American palm moth was discovered in Southern Switzerland. Part 2 ✌️ of my Anthurium Journey! While I was going through my plants tonight, I noticed the yellow dots on the inflo of the Pterodactyl. I had to instantly snap a photo, that looks crazy! It kinda freaks me out 😳 Switched phases in a matter of days 😂 I guess I was wrong, but that’s not a bad thing! Only a couple of days to switch to male, & produce this pollen for me. 🌱how it started vs. how it’s growing 🪴 Stefan is growing up 🥹 (Maranta Leuconeura) The prayer plant symbolizes happiness, devotion, and focus during the day the leaves lie flat, and stand up straight during the night. it’s this almost “praying before bed” notion that gives the plants their name. Diaries) I got Stefan last April in Oregon. He has had some ups and downs and a lot of pruning. Moving out of the damp and slightly dark climate has allowed him to flourish again. I water him every week when the soil starts to dry out. He sits in indirect light - so far that has seemed to work best for him. My favorite thing about him is his leafs. I love the intricate designs and different shades of green!
