After seeing the calls to action posted by @lititzchooseslove and @lancasterpride & hearing about the hateful and homophobic emails and calls the library is receiving from misinformed community members, we decided to send one of our members to attend the County Commissioners Board meeting yesterday at 9:15am and make it known to Josh Parsons that his hate and bigotry have no place in Lancaster. Every child deserves to feel safe in school, at home, and in their communities. From what I’ve read, Nex didn’t have this opportunity. Because they (friends say Nex preferred He/Him) was the victim of bullying. Not just once. Not just twice. And why? For being a gamer? An avid reader? An adventure seeker? Someone who says, “happy birthday?” Or maybe for being who they were: authentic. I didn't think my 44th post was gonna be this, I initially thought I'd make some Lewis artwork because 44 but due recent events this has to be something else and he probably would've done the same. Some of you might've heard that Nex Benedict, a 16 year old non-binary student was murdered by their bullies. The girls attacked Nex and they passed the day after. Of course the police doesn't help, they even blamed Nex for standing up for themselves. How many trans, non-binary, gender non confirming lives have to be taken until something happens? I don't want to stay silent but also nobody listens. I am trans too, even if all of us trans people got together our voices wouldn't be heard. We need help to get justice for Nex and their close ones. Their friends and their Grandma deserve justice. We need people to talk about this more. This is a systematic eradication of trans lives. They were beaten severely in their high school’s bathroom by 3 other students and unfortunately died the following day. The school failed Nex. The state of Oklahoma has failed Nex. I am feeling all sorts about this. The state of Oklahoma has been passing all kinds of anti-LGBT laws and Bills. Nex Benedict was only 16. They identified as non-binary and used they/they pronouns. I am incredibly heart broken for their family who now has to go through life without Nex. And I am devastated for Nex and others like them. As we’ve all recently witnessed the wholesale slaughter of children around the world, the thought of this immense loss, children -which are the literal embodiment of the future in all its potential- has weighed heavy on my mind. As a non binary fellow myself it was heartbreaking hearing about Nex, It’s unacceptable to hear these things again in 2024, it’s scary, it’s scary to think that i like so many other people can be KILLED in an environment that should be safe, like a school, and that no one will help us,simply for who we are. I don’t want Nex’s death to be forgotten, like all the other angels who lost their lives to monsters. There aren’t words for how heartbroken we are. This world is so difficult to navigate for these kids, and I just wish everyone would let them live their lives. As a proud parent myself, I worry every day about our kids and the potential violence that could befall them as they go through their lives and every time they need to use a public restroom it’s a risk.
