Formerly the Kent Arms which had the nickname Platform 5, it later became officially known as the Fat Fiddler, then Platform 5 before becoming the Breeze in April 2016. Closed in 2017, then reopened as a sports bar with Shisha Lounge "opening soon" but this latter facility never materialised. In early 2022 became a jazz bar and restaurant serving Turkish food. Having both passed our exams, this was the second holiday relief we were asked to do after the ghastly Pymmes Park Inn. This was right down the bottom of Kent, on the coast, the back garden gate opened onto the beach. It was right at the end of the Managers Own Catering thing too, which meant Managers ran their food operation, so we might a nice little profit in the 2 weeks we were there! I drove down there a couple of years back and it was all very disorientating. I found a building with the Seahorse S on it but it was up a slope further along the coast so think the sign got moved somewhere else. This pub is permanently closed. It was one of Whitbreads branded 'Wayside Inns', pubs for people who didn't like pubs, so no pool table, dart board, piped music. Just chintzy decor and food This pub is permanently closed. The Roebuck, West Street, Harrietsham, Kent. Pub 232 & no.66 of the Kent pubs on my list. First visited 18th June 1990. This was our first training house when we were taken on the Managers Training Scheme with Whitbread. Our Managers were Bob & Isla O'Sullivan (I think that surname is right), they had 2 little girls. We barely saw Ilsa but Bob was ever present. When we were there (for about 6 weeks I think) the M20 was being built and we had a load of Scouse workmen in every night who drank pints of Golden (half lager/half bitter). Typically Derek got to spend most of his time on the bar & cellar & me on the food counter & in the kitchen. We did have a Mr Whippy style ice-cream machine though that I loved using! Hari & I went back in the mid 2000's and the massive garden had gone and there were house crammed in. It was a Brewers Fayre when I was there and I'd never eat in one having worked in one! Its name was changed to Percival's Rest but now it is permanently closed. Pub in temporarily closed. The Old Jail, Jail Lane, Biggin Hill, Kent. Pub 118 & no.31 of the Kent pubs on my list. First visited 1st April 1989, aged 21. A weatherboarded 2-storey grade II listed building whose history stretches back around 200 years. Inside, the low beams mean that taller visitors must take note of the "duck or grouse" signs, but the pub is otherwise surprisingly spacious. It is believed that the building was not a long-term prison, but more likely an overnight stop for prisoners being transported from London to Maidstone. The pub is located close to the Battle of Britain airfield, and contains various porcelain items and other memorabilia. The Cock Horse, 39 The Street, Detling, Kent. Pub 278 & no.90 of the Kent pubs on my list. First visited 22nd November 1990. Having taken a leap of faith we had been accepted for pub management training with Whitbread. This was the pub they gave us to run after the training & holiday reliefs. We ran it for about 6 months before coming disillusioned with Whitbread. We then began the hunt for our own pub. This 14thC inn is just off the M20 north of Maidstone on the Pilgrims Way, the ancient trackway which runs between Winchester & Canterbury and was an important trade route in pre-Roman times. There has been an inn on the spot since the 14thC, & it stands at the foot of the steep Detling hill. The name comes from the need to supply a “cock” or trace horse to provide extra horsepower to get stage coaches & heavy carts up the hill. ♥️ Last night we had our final visit from one of our dog superstars, Alan the bulldog, to be our #dogoftheday for one last time. 🏠 Over the last 5 years, Alan has really got into the spirit of the pub having been a #Poseuratthebar a #Dogoftheday and also was one of our Christmas Day #Dogofthedays with Bomber just this last Christmas. 😍 Alan was a foster dog that ended being adopted into his forever home with Stuart & Emma. Sadly Als “forever” has been shortened at 8.5 years and he’s on palliative care.
