2024 started with a colorful explosion 🎆 🏅Madeira island is known for its show stopping fireworks show at New Year’s Eve. The tradition goes back to 17th century and in 2006 (then again in 2010) a Guinness World record was achieved. 💃🏻Locals take New Year’s Eve celebrations very seriously, getting all dressed up for black-tie events. Then, around midnight, they all gather to watch the colorful lights above the bay of Funchal city. 🛩️ This is probably the highest season to visit Madeira island, so if you’re intending to do so, make sure you plan way in advance. Specially if you want to get better deals on hotels and car rentals. 📷 I wasn’t able to get almost any fotos of the fireworks as I was holding an already sleepy toddler, but if you search online you will easily find great images. 2019 vs 2022 Same festival, same spot, same people around + one very special addition to the gang 👧🏼 Music festivals in the Azores are usually super child-friendly, but @festivalmaredeagosto has it to a whole different level. Even though concerts start a bit late, part of the festival’s area is reserved for families. It’s like an unwritten rule, but on the higher level you will find mostly picnic blankets with kids sleeping on them. Parents may take turns (or not) on watching the little ones and be with friends by the stage, but either way, they are still enjoying the concerts Unfortunately, the days before the festival Elana was a bit sick, so she didn’t get to see daddy @its_me_kaki_ performing on the first night, but she got to experience it after all. January rolled out 💛 Here are some 2022 cravings I’ve been having so far: ❌ Less time on my phone - I’ve realized how much time I’ve been dedicating to social media lately, and I was not happy. So I decided to change. Created a rule for myself to not access social media on weekends 📚More time for myself - as I started spending less time online, I was able to get more things done. And I was finally having time to get back to what fill my soul with joy, like reading. Don’t want to set goals, but I would be really happy if able to read at least one book per month this year 🥞Cook and experiment with new recipes in the kitchen - never been a fan of cooking but there’s this special feeling when you prepare meals for those you love. Trying new things or (in my case it’s more of) inventing new recipes have been fun and rewarding. We get so caught up in our daily routines, sometimes just adding a different spice might change the flavor of the entire meal 👯♀️ Of course, spending more quality time with my little girl. Let’s talk traveling with kids - more specifically baby & toddlers. Basically children that are at that cute stage of their development they won’t really collaborate 🙈 . To be honest, today’s flight went veeeery smoothly, much better than anticipated. But it was only two hours. Let’s hope next flying experience (4 hours) will be similar to this one 🤞🏻 . Elana is quite familiar to flying & aircrafts. We live on an island, so every time we need to go anywhere further, we need to catch a plane. Though the environment is still quite stimulating for her, so she finds it difficult to relax and sleep whilst flying. Do children outgrow this thing? People often ask me “how come you decided to move to the Azores?” And the reason behind this decision is very simple - what we came here after is the quality of life. And no, not because we have family here to help us raising our daughter. When we decided to move here we weren’t even planning for a baby yet. She came as a bonus only to confirm that we’re making the best decision for our family. Because the freedom of growing up on a small island is not something you find everywhere nowadays… . In 2019 when we finally said it out loud that we will move here, we were constantly traveling. And when we were at home (Lisbon) it was almost only about work and enjoying the comfort of our home. We basically stopped appreciating the city as it is and everything it had to offer. At the same time, we were spending so many vacation days to be in the Azores in the summer and to experience the island life. So it only made sense to move here permanently, and to use those days off to explore new places instead, even in summer time. Of course, that was when we were still traveling a ton. Today, our reality is different, though hopefully we’ll be able to start traveling again soon. Yet, the slower pace of life is still very appreciated. Specially now, when as parents we truly understand how time flies by so fast. And that what matter the most is the time we spend together. . So if you find yourself thinking of something quite often, there surely is a reason why. Do the thing, go there, make the move, take the next step, risk it. If it works you’ll be the happiest you’ve ever been. If it didn’t work - fine. That’s life. But at least you’ll never wonder “what if…”

Yesterday was a big day 🥳 According to Bulgarian tradition, when a child starts walking, a celebration shall follow. The mother of the child shall make a traditional bread and roll it towards a place where several object are placed, each one of them meaning to a profession. The first object the child picks is what (s)he’s aspired to be in the future. I’m no good at cooking, specially when it comes to making traditional Bulgarian bread (which I might say is a very, very tricky task), but I love our Bulgarian traditions. When living abroad, there’s something really comforting in keeping in touch with your ground, and passing it to your children. I know - in this fast-changing times we live in, we have no idea what the jobs of the future will be. So, we kept it simple. And if this proves to be true, we might be having an architect or an engineer in the making (she picked up the measuring tape). This came as no surprise, as Elana has always been very interested in sockets, cables, batteries and screws. But who knows. World Breastfeeding Week 🤱🏻 . Before becoming a mom there was one thing I really, really wanted to do, once my baby girl arrives - to breastfeed her. It was also the first challenge I faced as a #newmom. It wasn’t easy, it took time, effort and even tears (lots of tears), but eventually it all paid off. I’m extremely thankful for being able to breastfeed my daughter for almost 14 months so far. And we continue. . During this past year, I’ve breastfed her whenever you can imagine - at restaurants, airport lounges, airplanes, beaches, sidewalks. Name it - I’ve most likely done it. The benefits of breastfeeding for both baby and mom are countless. . Though I know not all moms feels the same way. For some it’s a personal choice to not breastfeed. This year Mother’s Day got a whole new meaning to me 🎀 Growing up in Bulgaria we don’t have a dedicated Mother’s Day and we’re honoring our moms on international women’s day instead. Thinking about it, it kind of makes sense as motherhood is an intense, 24/7 job you can’t take a day off of, but to be honest, I like the idea to separate them two and celebrate each day on their own. And on the first Sunday of May Portugal honors its Mothers 🤱🏻 Yet, back home, the home I grew up at, today is Easter Sunday. A holiday I’ve always loved for it’s traditions and gatherings. Not many people are able to understand my appreciation of the “bad” weather. And I get it. It’s not for everybody. I took this photo yesterday, as I was driving home. Elana was not happy being alone on the back seat, so I took the shot really quickly without actually stopping the car. Yet, the contrast caught my attention. You may thing that it’s nothing special. Gloomy, foggy and extremely humid weather. Though, it’s that high humidity indeed that makes the fields so beautifully green. And clouds passing so low, making us noticing there are peaks and valleys out there. You see, what we call “bad weather” is actually necessary in order to everything in nature work together as one. Just like our lows make us value our highs even more. Lisbon photo dump ☀️ There is a very beautiful word in Portuguese - the word “saudade”. It has no direct translation, but basically it’s what you feel when you really really miss someone/something. Related to it is the expression “a matar saudade”. Translated it would literally mean “to kill the feeling of missing by experiencing what you’ve been missing”. Confusing, I know. But only in words, as it really feels so good to “kill” that void. To walk (even with a mask on) around those beautiful buildings, painted in cheerful colors, and with heavy green doors. To feel again that morning sun kissing my face in bed. To go back home with my baby girl - the home we first brought her to... Lisbon was my home for the last almost 10 years. This is me on a very good day. And by “a very good day” I mean I brushed my hair, was able to put some color on my face (read make up) and even had the chance to sleep in later in the morning as @its_me_kaki_ got up to play with Elana. And even though I was able to get around 7h of sleep, the dark circles under my eyes are still present. . I don’t usually rant on social media, but bare with me for a sec. Last summer, just a month or two after giving birth, a few people told me I looked tired. As it was something I didn’t know. And while I didn’t care much and knew it was not intentional to somehow hurt my feelings, it made me wonder - who would benefit from such a comment? . Taking care of a baby is hard enough. Waking up several times at night is hard enough. Doubting yourself all the time whether you’re doing things right is hard enough. Not having time for yourself is hard enough... All a new mom needs is a strong support group. . So if you have a friend who just had a baby, please choose your words carefully and try to make it easier for her. . Wish you a joyful weekend. This photo really sums up the lifestyle we came after moving to the Azores. Elana had just waken up from her nap and we were able to go for a walk at the beach, before her lunch. We simply put on some flip flops (yep, even in February), left the house quite quickly (for what “leaving the house quickly with a baby” might mean), crossed the road and enjoyed a fresh walk on the not much, but still enough sand the ocean had left for us. . Today marks one month since we moved to the Azores 🤍 This move was planned and planned for so long, it kind of still feels unreal that we’re here actually to stay permanently.
