Carnation revolution: 50 years of democracy in Portugal. Today we commemorate the country's most famous military coup: the Carnation Revolution. On this historic day, a group of brave soldiers dared to put an end to the “Estado Novo”, the dictatorship that had been standing in Portugal for over 40 straight years. At the end of the 70´s, Portugal was shrouded in a political/social turmoil: The colonial war seemed to have no end and despite the casualties and losses on the battlefield, the government had no intention of sending the troops back. The soldiers were lost and tired of fighting a war that some , didn't even believe in. The censorship and poverty were not helping either. After a first attempt of revolution (Levantamento das Caldas), people were feeling the winds of change that seemed to be blowing. On April 24th 1974, another military operation was on the way, but this time for good. Organized by Armed Forces Movement (Portuguese: Movimento das Forças Armadas, MFA), this notable operation had a curious secret sign: two songs “E depois do Adeus” and “Grândola Vila Morena” were aired and broadcasted at 22:55h and 00:20h by two radio companies, alerting the rebel captains on when to begin the coup. After several events, on April 25th, by 16:30h, Marcelo Caetano, the prime minister at the time,who had taken refuge at the Carmo Barracks, announced its surrender and the dictatorship was over. On the streets, thousands of infectiously happy people celebrated freedom, which had been taken for so long. The operation Was the revolution peaceful or violent ? Taking into account the number of people that were on the streets and the possibility of a counter-revolution by the government, one can say that it was a peaceful military action. However, it is wrong to state that there were no casualties, or that retaliation wasn´t close. After the MFA´s success in ending the regime, after Marcelo Caetano´s surrender, a group of people besieged the headquarters of PIDE/DGS (Portuguese political police), seeking justice. Officials from the General Directorate of Security fired machine-gun bursts at the demonstrators: 4 people were killed and it is believed that 45 were injured throughout the whole revolution. And despite the image of a peaceful coup, few know that this was close to not being the case. At a time when Lisbon's Terreiro do Paço Square was full of civilians and military personnel, the frigate Gago Coutinho was ordered by the Navy General Staff to stay close to the site. On the morning of the 25th, the Commander was ordered to open fire on the site: the order was not carried out, as there were many people in Terreiro do Paço.
