It’s National Pet ID week! Even the most unadventurous cats and dogs can get lost, run off unexpectedly, or get separated from their people - the team at Oakland Animal Services has seen it all. National Pet Identification week is a reminder for us all to take a few minutes and make sure that if the unthinkable happens (our pet goes missing!), we have the best possible chance of getting them home safely. Here are 2 easy but crucial steps to properly ID your pet: 1️⃣ It’s most important to have a collar with ID tag (with your phone number!) on the pet at all times. It’s the easiest, cheapest and fastest way for a lost pet to be returned home, since any passerby can contact you without the animal ever going to the shelter. ID tags can be bought online or at pet supply stores for as low as $3. 2️⃣ The next most important method is to have a microchip. This is especially useful in case a pet slips out of their collar. If your pet already has a chip, please make sure the information is up-to-date! A microchip is like a VIN or license plate number - it’s meaningless if it’s not registered to your contact info. Oakland Animal Services can microchip Oakland dogs and cats for $10. You can also have your pet microchipped at your veterinarian or local vaccine clinic. When you’re outside Ukraine, or just not in the east or south of the country, it’s hard to grasp that instead of passenger planes, fighter jets rule the skies. What sounds to me like a bomb blast nearby is just a car passing by. For many people all over the world, the war in Ukraine feels like a reality show, distant and surreal. Yet, when I mentioned flying back to Kharkiv next week after the conference, reactions ranged from surprise to disbelief. I guess it sounded as surprising as someone deciding to go to the moon. Sadly, the reality of war in Ukraine has become the norm in many countries. It’s so utterly wrong. While I don’t know how to change it, I’m returning to Kharkiv because it’s where I belong. ❤️ #WarReality #returntohome

When he did his test it went basically flawless, and I was thinking, if I could get that same result that would be awesome! Chickpea & White Bean Curry 🍛 😍 Easy two pot meal that is #gutfriendly and #budgetfriendly. Odds are you already have most of the ingredients sitting around the house. Don't forget to #MakeItMessy as your own. Ingredients: 1 tbsp Neutral Oil Pinch of Cardamom Seeds Pinch of Mustard Seeds 6 Garlic Cloves [Pressed or Minced] Thumb of Minced Ginger 1 Medium Red Onion Chopped 3 Heirloom Tomatoes Diced 1 tbsp Tomato Paste Kosher Salt 1c. Chickpeas 1c White Beans Smoked Paprika, Cumin, Coriander Neutral Oil Handful of Bay Leaves or Curry Leaves Turmeric, Garam Masala, Chili Flakes to Taste 1c. Coconut Milk Directions: Preheat oven to 425 Wash and pat dry your beans and chickpeas before adding in your smoked paprika, cumin and coriander blend and oil them, roasting for 20 minutes. Warm up your tbsp of neutral oil over med-hi heat and toss in your Mustard and Cardamom pods, cooking until fragrant and slightly browned. Add your garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until your house is smelling good. Add the onion and sweat them out, about 4 or 5 minutes. Then slide the tomatoes and paste in and let it break down, another few minutes. Make sure you're seasoning throughout. Add the coconut milk to your curry mix and bring to a simmer before adding the beans. Što je RTH i kako koristimo Return to Home? Oprez, malo duži post. 📖 🤓 ➡️ RTH = Return to Home je povratak na početnu poziciju, tj. točku polijetanja. ➡️ RTH se aktivira pritiskom tipke na kontroleru, ili automatski u slučaju gubitka signala između drona i kontrolera ili ukoliko dosegnete kritičnu razinu baterije dovoljnu za povrat na točku polijetanja. ➡️ Kako bi RTH funkcija radila, potreban je stabilan GPS signal. ➡️ Uz pomoć GPS signala dron određuje svoju početnu poziciju I na nju se vraća prilikom aktivacije RTH. ➡️ RTH opcija ne radi ukoliko postoje bilo kakve smetnje sa GPS signalom, kao npr. nedovoljan broj satelita ili potpuni gubitak GPS signala. ➡️ Iako neki noviji dronovi imaju opciju izbjegavanja prepreka prilikom povratka na početnu poziciju, najsigurniji način povratka je na visini na kojoj nema nikakvih prepreka. RTH visinu je potrebno postaviti prije samog leta. ⚠️ ➡️ Kako odrediti koja je sigurna visina za povrat drona? Najjednostavnije je vertikalno poletjeti s dronom i postaviti ga na visinu najviše prepreke, zatim očitati kolika je visina od tla i postaviti nešto veću visinu za RTH povrat - 5-10 metara. ➡️ Kako bi bili sigurni da će nam se dron sigurno vratiti potrebno je prije leta pripaziti na smjer i jačinu vjetra. ➡️ Ukoliko imamo čeoni vjetar prilikom povrata na točku polijetanja, imat ćemo veći otpor, dron će trošiti više baterije i možda neće moći dosegnuti točku polijetanja te ćete biti primorani izvršiti prinudno slijetanje ili će to dron napraviti za vas bez obzira što se u tom trenutku nalazilo na tlu. Celebrating Melina Mercouri on International Women’s Day. Melina Mercouri was a famous Greek actress, politician and activist. She was born in Athens on 18 October 1920, and died on 6 March 1994 in New York City, where she was being treated for lung cancer. From an actress starting out in the 1940s, to an activist and Minister of Culture later in life, Melina Mercouri was always unconventional, outspoken and determined. Infamously, Mercouri pushed strongly for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens. Those marbles were removed by Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, in the early 1800s, and are exhibited in the British Museum in London. Yesterday, 6th March, which is the anniversary of her death (30 years) all public museums and ancient monuments in Greece offered free entrance to visitors. According to her wishes, Melina was buried wearing her famous red dress, which she had worn during her anti-dictatorship protests. A copy of that dress is exhibited at the Melina Mercouri Foundation, along with other items that belonged to her. This foundation is dedicated to preserving the work and legacy of Melina Mercouri. An inspirational Greek woman who deserves ongoing recognition. This little painting, “Home”, inspired by poem “Natural History” by E.B. White, truly resonates with me in very personal way. You never know what can be conjured up from words on a page, the magic of illustration and art making. Natural History The spider, dropping down from twig, Unwinds a thread of her devising: A thin, premeditated rig To use in rising. And all the journey down through space, In cool descent, and loyal-hearted, She builds a ladder to the place. From which she started. White, Poems and Sketches, 1929 This painting depicts a contemplative, but still and content spider in the sparkle of a quiet night. Gold leaf shimmers from her back, the branch of which she is suspended, and the heart of her web. The poem was written by author E.B. White for his wife, however, due to the often subjective nature of poetry, this poem gifts a personal message. The silken strand which the spider is suspended links to her own place in the world where she can return to her center. And, the rungs of many ladders guide her on her journey to home and to self. I began visiting her home as a teen when life started getting rough for me, it started with Sunday night movies and ice cream. Miffy introduced me to The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago, and taught me about Amelia Earhart... And she took me in when things got really bad. My first night there since childhood I was given the most delight dinner, followed by a cappuccino and Milano cookie on the side. I sat in her dining room surrounded by soft light and German antiques and felt safe. She knew how to make a house a home, her decor and her love for hospitality set the atmosphere. Her home could put any seaside Hallmark movie set to shame! These were the foundations. The start of the small things inside little Alyssa that encouraged her that she could build a home too. The little bits of home I witnessed that marked me and gave me hope. I'd only had this revelation recently as I shared with a friend my season of living in Miffy's sacred cottage, and she said "so you made that here." Truthfully I hadn't consciously tried to replicate it, but then I realized yes... That brief glimpse of home after so much grief and pain... That example became my true North. My compass points there when I don't know what to do next. Because Miffy's house wasn't just pretty. Yes, it was safe. And such a love for art, music, and beauty that affected my soul! But it always pointed me to Jesus and truth too. Holiness lived there within the walls. Miffy has such a steadfast love of the Lord, it came up in every conversation. Her fire for the Lord inspired me! She is the reason I am who I am now, why I crafted my home in this way, because she was my example of a cozy homemaker rooted in the Lord no matter her circumstances. And she always had tea at the ready, because tea and home are the ultimate respite in a messy world. Thank you Jesus for giving me that home, even just for a little bit. Because living in my godmother's home set me on the trajectory of who I am today. The last two pictures remind me of the garden I saw as a little girl, and Miffy's art space in her sun porch room. The ones just before that are her and I on her porch before I left for Ohio & her lovely home
Saturday I attended the @clevelandseedbank seed swap and what a joy it was! This event is such a blessing to the community and I am itching to start my garden this year. It is the time of dreaming and preparation... Laying out the plans, setting up my space for seed starting, and my heart is so full! Not only were there seeds aplenty, but people shared cuttings as well! I shared my dehydrated sourdough starter, and there was a whole table dedicated to ferments! There was also a man with buckets of mixed cover crop seed, which was a huge blessing as I've been wanting to grow greens for my hens to forage since they can't free range right now. I met some really wonderful people sharing native seeds and explaining the value of landscaping with native plants, something that's become really important to me in recent years. Last year we turned our front yard into a native flower + herb garden and added raised beds, so I'm thrilled to expand that with more natives and an additional raised bed this spring! I hope next year to volunteer and help with the event, this is the coolest thing to me and I hope more and more people start backyard gardens to feed their families and restore the earth with happy roots and nutrients.
